Dorothy Jean Killian, “Dot,” is a native of Rock Hill, South Carolina. She has lived all of her life in the Carolinas, but enjoys travel both inside and outside the United States. Dot was baptized when she was 8 years old at Boyd Hill Baptist Church. In 2000, she joined Hermon Presbyterian Church (USA) where she currently serves as Ruling Elder. Since June 2007, Dot has been a member of the staff of Providence Presbytery where she serves as Associate Presbyter (part-time) for Congregational Development &

Mission. She also serves as staff liaison to the Mission & Outreach Ministry Team, Committee for Racial and Religious Reconciliation (CRRR). Dot has served as Commissioner to the Synod, and as a member of the Mission Discernment Task Force, Capital Campaign of Providence Presbytery, and the Permanent Judicial Commission for the Presbytery and the Synod. In April 2015, Dot received the Master of Divinity degree from Union Presbyterian Seminary, Charlotte, North Carolina. Dot was ordained as Minister of Word & Sacrament on Sunday, August 14, 2016. For the last two years she has served as pulpit supply in several of the churches in Providence Presbytery, and looks forward to serving Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church as Interim Pastor beginning on October 1, 2016. Dot received her undergraduate degree in English and a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Winthrop University. After teaching high school and college English for 12 years, Dot enrolled in law school. She received her Juris Doctorate from North Carolina Central University School of Law, Durham, North Carolina. Dot has practiced law since 1988, and is admitted to the South Carolina Bar, the Bar of the Federal District Court for the District of South Carolina, the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. In 1997, Dot joined the staff of the South Carolina Department of Social Services as a Regional Attorney. In 2000, she was promoted to Assistant General Counsel where she served until her retirement in 2014. Dot has served as part-time municipal judge in Rock Hill, and as an adjunct professor in the Political Science and Sociology Departments at Winthrop and in the English Department at Clinton Jr. College. She is also a Certified Family Court Mediator.

The LHPC Wedding Policy was added as Section IV and the Sexual Misconduct Policy was added as Section V to the

LHPC Manual of Operations.

All Providence Presbytery Session clerks meet yearly so that Session Minutes can be reviewed by another Church’s

Clerk. The LHPC minutes were approved with no exceptions.

Session approved the May 24, 2016 Session Poll (Bicycle Tour des Trees Rest Stop):

Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church has been contacted by the coordinator of a group of cyclists of the STIHL Tour des

Trees to benefit the TREE Fund. On Friday, October 14, with nearly 500 miles of cycling behind them, (20 of those

miles logged that morning), about one hundred cyclists will be passing through Liberty Hill on their way from Camden

to have lunch at Andrew Jackson State Park.

As their request stated, "the riders will have logged 600 miles by week's end, planted a couple dozen new trees in North

and South Carolina, donated 500+ children's books to schools and libraries, and raised more than $300,000 for

research administered by the TREE fund that will extend the life span of trees living in urban environments. Just as

important, [they'll] have met countless people who share [their] love for this planet and [their] concern for its

welfare. [Their] hope is to build a sense of common cause with those [they] meet, and inspire them to stewardship of

the trees in their communities." The coordinator also shared that "[she] was impressed by the welcoming language on

[our] website, and hoped that [our] willingness to embrace diversity might extend to a gaggle of tree-crazy cyclists for a

morning."

They are asking if LHPC would "welcome [their] riders, applaud the good work they're doing, share some refreshments,

and accept [their] gift of a new tree on [our] site and some books for [a] local library."

I am asking you Elders to vote as to whether or not you would agree to LHPC welcoming and hosting the cyclists on

October 14. If you agree to welcome them then you are also agreeing to take part; i.e. help provide the refreshments,

serving and cleaning up, and being present, if at all possible, to be "the face of the church."

Session approved the minutes of the June 5, 2016, Called Session Meeting. (Pastor’s Retirement) and the Minutes of the

June 19, 2016 Congregational Meeting. (Pastor’s Retirement)

Session approved the Minutes of the June 26, 2016 Called Session Meeting. (Pastoral Care in interim). Brother Gene

will provide Pastoral Care and we will seek to find an Interim Pastor.

Session approved a poll to replace the HVAC unit in Bettie Richards Hall that ceased functioning properly.

July 31, 2016 Called Meeting

Two visitors addressed Session on concerns about the direction the church has taken and will take during the transition

to an interim and then called pastor.

Session approved the July 22, 2016 Session Poll, Gift for Mary D. that is the larger of donations or $1000.

August 10, 2016 Called Meeting

Session voted to offer a call to Rev. Dot Killian as our interim pastor. Monetary terms would be the same as Dr. Hutch

Hutchison’s. Her ministry at LHPC would begin October 1, 2016. Her first Sunday in the pulpit could be October 2,

2016.

Approved Gene Ghent to cover pastoral and preaching duties through September.

The words of “Jesus Loves the Little Children” without fail prompts me to stop for a few moments to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for the love and support our church shows for the children in our church family and in our community. Over the past few months Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church has demonstrated that love and support in some very important ways. In June we hosted our third Camp in a Van program. Many of our church members contributed snacks, made financial contributions, and volunteered time and talents to make this camp the best experience to date. During the camp there was concern raised about the condition of the playground equipment. Thus, a fundraising effort was begun in late June. In less than two months approximately $7200.00 has been collected to create an area that is more purposeful and with equipment that is more durable. In the pre-school area, we are grateful for the work that Mike Clark, Lloyd Douglas, and George Harkins have done

to the surface area. We are awaiting the arrival of two interactive panels that will be installed as quickly as possible. The plans are to budget approximately one-half of the funds for the pre-school area and to use the remaining funds to purchase a commercial grade swing set for all ages. Once again we have answered a need of socks and underwear expressed by Baron DeKalb Elementary School. A large box, overflowing with those clothing items, was delivered to the school this week. Our next outreach event for our children and their families will be the annual Fall Festival on Sunday, October 23rd. After the 11:00 service we will enjoy a hot dog lunch before the games and activities begin. Last year’s Cake Walk was a very successful addition and we will be calling on volunteers to provide the cakes and cookies for the Cake Walk. Proceeds from the Cake Walk will be added to our Dimes for Hunger collection. I am so very grateful for every contribution that has been made. These outreach efforts to our children and their families will touch lives for many, many years. The little white church on the hill makes an amazing difference in our community and far beyond. Our Fall Children's and Youth Sunday School curriculums range from Preschool through High School. Miss Izetta will lead the Preschool Sunday School. Laura Horton will lead

study for the older children. Sunday School begins at 10:15 each Sunday morning.

August 5, 2016 - A Very Special Day for Wateree Lake, Liberty Hill and LHPC Representatives from the SC Department of Natural Resources, Duke Energy, SC Conservation Bank, local politicians and numerous other agencies met with the family of Austin Sheheen, Sr. at the Liberty Hill Wildlife Management Area on the morning of Friday, August 5, 2016. The gathering was to formally dedicate more than 3,400 acres as the Austin Sheheen, Sr. Natural Resources Area at Liberty Hill Wildlife Management Area. Mr. Sheheen, who died in 2000, began his love affair with Wateree Lake in 1948 when his rented cabin was one of only three on the lake. In 1964 he and his family gained title to the property with five generations now having grown up on these shores. With Sheheen’s grandson Sen. Vincent Sheheen’s initiative and help from many individuals, state and federal agencies, the site will be preserved for families to enjoy for generations to come. It is open (per the Chronicle-Independent’s August 9, 2016 article), for public recreation, including hiking, hunting, bird watching and fishing. Following the dedication event, Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church served as the venue for a luncheon for family, friends and business associates in Miss Bettie Richards Fellowship Hall. The room was decorated beautifully, the caterer’s food filled the air, and as guests arrived, I was blessed with the task of greeting and welcoming each to LHPC. They were all so appreciative and grateful that we shared our facilities with them. They especially appreciated the air conditioning as it had been a very warm morning on the lake! Many had never been to our church on the Hill and were amazed at the beauty and serenity they found here. Once again, friend and stranger alike are touched by this little historic church. It just warms my heart each time I see people’s reaction. I am deeply appreciative that SCDNR offered to leave me the poster boards that were on display during their luncheon that feature photographs of the dedication site, a history of Mr. Sheheen’s involvement with preserving the lake, as well as an aerial depiction of the property. One of the posters is on display in the Gene Rollins Ministry Library. When our Sunday Lakeside members and friends return to Sundays on the Hill, you are encouraged to stop by the library. From time to time, I will change out the posters for all to enjoy. To visit the newly dedicated area, turn off Hwy 97 in Liberty Hill onto Singleton Creek Road (near the Post Office). Take the first right onto Wildlife Road and travel 3 miles to a split rail fence on the left with an informational kiosk surrounded by a parking area.

"Long Ago at Liberty Hill"

(The following statements come from “Liberty Hill News” articles as reported in the Wateree Messenger and Camden Chronicle by correspondent G. R. Clements and later, by Miss Louise Johnston.) WATEREE MESSENGER: September 5, 1938 Kansas is known as the Sunflower state, but we think Liberty Hill is due some distinction also in the production of the beautiful yellow flowers. They are to be seen in many places here and a lady friend tells

of one plant at her home 14 feet high, the stalk 7 inches in circumference, with 200 blooms. We think this is quite a record. Can anyone surpass it? (THAT is some sunflower! SCH) CAMDEN CHRONICLE: September 24, 1940 A costly fire was no doubt prevented by the timely discovery of smoke issuing from a bale of cotton on the platform of the Mackey-Jones company late Saturday evening. The bale had been ginned, bought and put on the platform late the same day with thirty or forty other bales CAMDEN CHRONICLE: September 23, 1941 Flying Cadet C.D. Cunningham, Jr., spent the week end with his parents here. He was due to return Tuesday for one week more of instructions and practice when he will receive his wings, and become a full-fledged member of Uncle Sam’s flying corp. Everybody here is wishing for him a safe and pleasant period of service when he goes on duty for the United States. CAMDEN CHRONICLE: September 30, 1941 Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Cunningham and twin daughters, Misses Mary and Sarah, attended the graduating exercises of their son and brother, C. D. Cunningham, Jr., at the aviation school in Selma, Ala., on Friday last. They saw him receive his diploma and wings. He was commissioned a second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps at Craig Field, at Selma, Alabama, on September 26. CAMDEN CHRONICLE: September 2, 1949 On account of the stormy weather on Sunday morning, there was no Sunday school or church service. Rev. McDowell Richards, D.D., president of Columbia Theological Seminary at Decatur, Ga., preached on Sunday evening to a large and attentive audience. CAMDEN CHRONICLE: September 3, 1954 The South Carolina Highway Department has begun the work of grading and top soiling the Church Hill road, preparatory to paving. (Presume this to be Meeting Lane. SCH) CAMDEN CHRONICLE: September 18, 1957 The Thompson’s bird dog, Mary, was pulled out of an old well in the Thompson’s yard by the Rescue Squad of Camden Sunday afternoon. The dog seemed to have no serious ill effects from her accident.

Bible Study Girls Fall Events and News

Bible Study Girls will kick off this year with the Beth Moore Simulcast at Malvern Hill Baptist Church

in Camden on Saturday, September 17. It is just about an all day event, usually lasting from about

9:00 in the morning till about 4:00/4:30 in the afternoon.. For those of you who have signed up, we

will be getting details on transportation and times to leave church next week.

We will meet once a month this fall, hopefully on the third Saturday morning of each month. Our

goal is to meet in a BSG home with food, fellowship, and Bible Study. Nancy is firming up all of the

arrangements and we will get out emails as soon as everything is finalized.

The first of the year, we will begin weekly Bible Study. Be considering which day would be best for

you....Tuesday evenings or Saturday mornings. Right now, the study that looks promising is Kelly

Minter’s All Things New. It is a study of 2 Corinthians.

Please be in prayer for our BSGs as we move forward. God has a plan for us and I know we all want

to be right in the middle of what He is doing.

Dinner and a Movie Returns in September

On Friday, September 30th at 6:30 PM we will meet in Miss Bettie Richards Hall to share a wonderful meal and watch the inspiring The Blind Side. Our gracious hosts, Doug and Nancy

Macdonald, are still working on the menu.

Please call the church office by Wednesday, September 28 if you plan to attend.

The Bible Study Sunday School Class will be studying 1 and 2 Peter this year. Some of the themes will be "A Faith in the Fire" and "Holding Fast.” For those who studied Ephesians last year, Peter’s books will solidify and come alongside Paul’s book to the Ephesians. These two pillars of the early church taught the same principles and are in agreement in what they say... Come be with us. There will be a workbook that you can use or just refer to... I know I always say, "It's just wonderful; it's the best yet!" I can't help myself! Gods love letter to us… The Word is precious beyond explanation! Gwen Starnes The Discussion Sunday School Class will be titled "Martyr: A Christian History.” It will be a series of discussions based on early Christian martyrdom. I am focusing on biblical characters in the New Testament and how the acts of these people affect our modern lives. There will be no book to buy. I am using several different types of texts. I have been studying and preparing for this all summer. Rob Jones
