In A Presbytery Of Prayer Issue 2/1 Parramatta-Nepean Presbytery Prayer Guide, January - March, 2011 2 Introduction Welcome to the second year of In a Presbytery of Prayer. I’ve told the following story before, but learned 2 Sundays ago that it’s worth re-telling. On a holiday in Sweden and Germany 2 years ago my wife Lena and I visited the Nazi Concentration Camp at Buchenwald, named for the Beech Forest through which the German poets Goethe and Schiller once wandered. Germans feel that the camp is an obscenity that defaces the memory of these greats of their culture as well as destroying a great swathe of beautiful beech forest. The visit upset me so deeply that I wept for 2 hours as I walked around the camp, and I wondered if I would vomit. Yet for weeks after we returned home I was constantly visited by joy. There was an undercurrent of joy in everything I did, which was strange given that I began as Presbytery Minister, launching straight into a range of difficult pastoral problems while trying to finish a PhD. Weirdly, I had the 4th movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony constantly running around in my head. I couldn’t understand what was going on until one day the penny dropped: I remembered that the melody in my head was the music Beethoven composed to Schiller's great poem An die Freude, Ode to Joy. It was as though God was telling me, "David, now you have seen the worst of what humans can do, and still I prevail.” At Christmas time we remember just how God has prevailed: in Jesus, who came to light the world. ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.’" (John 1:5) So have a blessed Christmas and 2011. Don’t forget to pray, and to send in your prayers to me at [email protected] and I shall incorporate them as appropriate in subsequent editions. May the holiday period be a time of grace and peace, joy, love and rest. David Reichardt, Presbytery Minister

Introduction Welcome to the second year of In a Presbytery of Prayer. I’ve told the following story before, but learned 2 Sundays ago that it’s worth re-telling. Days 7 - 24 The Presbytery in Zones

“The harvest is plentiful but the labourers are few. Pray therefore earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.” Luke 10:2

The concept of missional zones was introduced in the Presbytery Mission and Property Review of 2009. Four of the seven recommendations of that Review had to do with these zones: 1) Orient the Mission of Congregations through Mission Partnerships within

Zones. 2) Increase the resources/capacity of large congregations to support Zones

and significantly expand their capability. 6) Explore opportunities for full time placements within Mission Zones. 7) Encourage creativity within zones. The maps below show the suggested zones. In this issue the congregations of the Presbytery are listed in these zones, rather than alphabetically. Some

6

congregations have been placed in one zone in this Prayer Guide, but may well relate more to congregations of another zone. Pray that the concept of zones will be considered well and used wisely in mission by the Presbytery’s congregations.
