The Covenant of Heartland Presbytery

As the body of Christ, we covenant with God and with each

other to affirm our unity in Jesus Christ and share

Christ’s ministry with others as the Holy Spirit leads us. Adopted September 28, 2007

OUR COVENANTAL VALUES

Proclaim and celebrate the good news of Jesus Christ to one another and the world in

our worship, ministry and mission.

We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers,

constantly, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and

labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. [1 Thes. 1:2-3]

Affirm and give thanks for the variety of our gifts so that our common ministry may be

enriched by the Holy Spirit.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of

services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the

same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given a

manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

[1 Cor. 12:4-7]

Respect one another as sisters and brothers in Christ.

Let us no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead never to put a

stumbling block or hindrance in the way of another. [Rom 14:13]

Care for one another through mutual prayer and the sharing of our needs and concerns.

God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.

Love has been perfected among us in this: That we may have boldness on the day

of judgment, because as he is, so are we in this world…. We love because he first

loved us. [1 John 4:16b-17, 19]

Empower one another to “do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God”

through shared ministry and mission.

He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you

but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? [Micah

6:8]

Engage in faithful stewardship by sharing our gifts in common ministry and mission.

The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the

one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as

you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves

a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in

abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share

abundantly in every good work. [II Cor. 9:6-8]

A Partnership of Prayer

“I pray that…you may be strengthened in your inner being with

power through God’s Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your

hearts as you are being rooted and grounded in love.”

(Ephesians 3:16-17)

Because we are members of the Body of Christ, and

Because we are brothers and sisters in Christ, and

Because we follow the example of our

Lord Jesus Christ and

his servant Paul,

who prayed for

those who were close to them,

We pray for and with one another.

There is power in prayer, and power in many voices praying at the

same time for the same purpose. This booklet is your invitation to

join a Partnership of Prayer, beginning on June 7, 2015, 2nd Sunday

after Pentecost. On each successive Sunday we will pray for

churches who are part of the family named Heartland Presbytery and

our partner Maya Quiché Presbytery. The names of the churches

will appear each week in the Heartland Connection and will be

placed on Presbytery’s website www.heartlandpby.org.

…Now unto the One who by the power at work in us is able to

accomplish abundantly far more than we can ask or imagine, to

God be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations,

forever and ever.” (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Celebrating 20 Years of Presbytery Partnership: 1995-2015

Maya Quiché Presbytery in Guatemala, Central America

MQP's 22 churches are located around the large city of Quetzaltenango (also known as

Xela) in the western highlands and also south of there on the tropical lowlands.

Established in 1959, the presbytery was the first indigenous, non-geographic presbytery

to be organized in the Guatemalan Presbyterian Church. Presbytery meetings are held

twice a year for two days at a time, at the end of April and the end of October. Among

other things, Heartland provides scholarships so that MQP leaders can take seminary

classes, and as needed, continue with their secular education. Training workshops have

been sponsored, and some general support of the presbytery's work has been provided.

A. The town of La Esperanza to the west: Filadelfia, 125 members
