LOOKING IN THE RIGHT PLACES “Appearances can be deceiving,” as the saying goes. As we celebrate the epiphania, the “appearing” of the eternal Word of God on earth, this is still true. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the next few weeks, if you were to stroll around Prague or Budapest or Kraków, you might see curious graffiti scratched in chalk over some doorways: “20 + C + M + B + 16.” The families dwelling behind those doors have celebrated the Epiphany door blessing. They have gathered before the feast-day meal, probably after Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the leader traces the numbers for the new year, and the letters C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for “May Christ bless this house.” The letters also point to the names that tradition has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar—although scrip-ture tells us nothing of their number, their country, or their names. The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as satisfying as was the magi’s. It prays that the house be-yond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived in Bethlehem. In some countries where the Soviet Union tried to impose a harsh atheism, the vigor of this household custom survived all efforts to erase Christian customs. In the years of struggle, the chalked blessings were a pervasive sign of defiance, and now in the light of new freedoms, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradition and the fulfillment of the magi’s quest for meaning and peace. —Rev. Youth Ministry & Confirmation Updates

Throughout this year, many volunteers have faithfully and lovingly tended to the needs of the Church community. Some of these roles are more visible than others but all deserve a huge round of applause! To all the sacristans who prep for each Mass, to all the acolytes and altar servers who serve the priests at the altar during Mass, to all the lectors who proclaim the readings, to all the Eucharistic Ministers

who reverently distribute communion, to all the ushers who welcome all and provide directions, and to all the altar society members who clean our linens:

Thank you! Your work is greatly appreciated.

May you experience many blessings during the Christmas Season and throughout the year to come!

Merry Christmas!

Happy New Year!

Always Forward, Never Back

Thank You for your Stewardship

Your continued generosity is always appreciated. It is through your support that Carmel Mission continues its

mission of spreading the Word of our Lord. May God bless you all. —Fr. Paul, Pastor

The story of the Magi—the wise men—as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew makes several facts very clear. We often focus on the gifts that were brought as examples of stewardship, and, in truth, this story was certainly one of the inspirations for the giving that occurs at Christmas. However, as is often the case, there is a deeper and more meaningful message found here. When they found the child Jesus, they opened their treasures and

they gave “Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” They did not present the gifts to His parents; they presented them directly to Him. The baby Jesus had no real need for these gifts, and we assume that Mary and Joseph used them in Christ’s behalf, to support Him. That is what we do when we give to the Church. Although our gifts need to be viewed by us as gifts to God, we also must have a trust, which includes the understanding that those who will use the gifts will use them wisely and justly. The Magi trusted that their gifts would be used in a way that was beneficial. We need to have that same kind of trust. Most of all, we need to understand the importance of giving, of being good stewards. These wealthy scholars and priests of the East endured numerous dangers, and traveled great distances to offer their treasures to Christ, the newborn king. What a beautiful and meaningful example of stewardship they set for all future generations, helping us to understand the blessing of properly using and sharing God’s gifts. Thank you, our dear parishioners, for your continuous support of Carmel Mission Basilica and for giving of your time, talents and treasure all year through and most especially for your generosity at Christmas and New Year.

Carmel Mission Book Club News The Book Club is reading and discussing The Betrothed, considered Italy’s greatest novel and a masterpiece of world literature, as well as a favor-ite of Pope Francis. Set in Lombardy (now Tuscany in northern Italy) in the 1600’s, and recently retrans-lated to modern English. The novel weaves issues of faith, justice, power, and truth into a powerful clas-sic. This is a masterwork by Alessandro Manzoni. The Book Club meets each Saturday at 2pm in MacMahon. All are welcome to attend and join in the discussion. It isn’t necessary to attend every session. Call Deacon Bill at 646-0358 for more information.

Wheelchairs Available: Wheel-chairs are available in the Museum Gift Store for anyone needing mobility as-sistance while visiting. The irregular surfaces around the Mission can make it difficult for parishioners to get from their cars to the Basilica. Please let the staff know and they will be happy to assist you.

BITTEN FALGE FARM WORKER PROGRAM

The Steering Committee wishes to thank all of our fellow parishioners who took grocery bags and angels from the Giving Tree and returned the filled bags and gifts on time! The 140 farm families we serve

monthly were so grateful for the gifts and the extra food, blankets and clothing that we distributed to them on December 21st. Bishop Garcia and Fr. Paul were there and went to separate camps to play Santa Claus and distribute the gifts to the families and their children. Also, we offer a special thanks to Laura Anderson and the choir members who went to Campo 21 to distribute food and gifts to the farm families living there. We wish to make a special note of thanks to the Car-mel Mission Council of the Knights of Columbus for purchasing coats for all the 235 children living in the four farm camps that we serve. These coats were dis-tributed on December 10th at St. Theodore Church in Gonzales—the children were enormously pleased! Thanks to all of you for making this the best year for our Christmas delivery.

DOCENT CORNER When the padres were selecting a saint for whom to name the Carmel Mission, they could not have made a better choice. The statue of St. Charles Borroméo sits high on top of the Reredos of the main altar. Carlo Borroméo was the son of the count of Arona and Margarita de' Medici who was born in Lago Maggiore in northern Italy in 1538. When he was about 12 years old, his uncle resigned as the Abbot of Sts. Gratinian and Felinus Abbey and Carlo took over. Later, he studied the civil and canon law at Pavia and in 1559 he obtained his doctoral degree. A year later another uncle, Cardinal Angelo de' Medici, was raised to the pontificate as Pius IV. Borroméo became, at the age of 22, practically the leading statesman of the papal court as the Secretary of State and was created a Cardinal with supervision over the Franciscans, the Carmelites and the Knights of Malta. Soon after, he became the Archbishop of Milan. He was a very skillful papal diplomat and politician. He was instrumental in completing the final deliberations of the Council of Trent which determined Church doctrines in answer to the Protestant reforma-tion and reformed the Church by removing numerous abuses. He was ordained a priest in Rome in 1563 (at age 25). After the death of Pius IV (1566), Carlo’s skill and diligence contributed materially to the smooth election of the next Pope. After some additional service in Rome under Pius V as a leader of the Counter Reformation, he devoted himself to reforming his Milan diocese which had not had the Archbishop in residence in 80 years. The great abuses which had overrun the church at this time arose principally from the ignorance of the clergy. Borroméo restored decency and dignity to divine services and he extended his tough reforms to the churches and the monasteries. He established seminaries, colleges and communities for the education of the clergy. In 1576, when Milan had the plague, he visited the sick, distributed money, buried the dead, provided accommodations for the sick and punished those, especially the clergy, who were remiss in discharging their duties. He died in 1584 at age 46. The Borroméo family is still well known in Milan and he is buried in the crypt of the Milan Cathedral. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Car-mel Mission Docent Association

Sounds of the Season, Faces of our Future One of the great blessings of our Catholic heritage is the body of music for the Christmas season! Witness the new recording of our own Carmel Mission Basilica Schola Cantorum, Arise, My Soul, Arise—A Song for Every Season! The children of Junípero Serra School have the privilege of singing of Jesus' birth and humankind’s salvation as part of their Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany experience, too. Following in the footsteps of our 4th and 5th graders who traditionally sing for the Basilica’s Altar Society each Christmas, the Kindergarten and 1st graders above were invited to share the good news with a group of our City of Carmel employees in December. May these faces of our future remind us of all that God has done for us. Happy Epiphany and Happy 2016 from JSS! —Mary Ellen Ryan, Principal

Jubilee Year of Mercy The Epiphany of the Lord

Dear Parish Family, A New Year, new beginnings, new hopes, new opportunities to develop our relationship with our loving Lord. My wish for you is a truly Happy New Year. I hope that you grow in your love for others as Jesus asks us to do in his name. Works of Mercy How did it happen? What circumstances could lead to a person being without a home? The reasons are many and I know that in my heart of hearts I can’t imagine living on the street without a roof over my head or a warm bed in a safe place to sleep. I can pray for those who find themselves homeless, but it takes more than prayers to find resolution to the challenge of homelessness. The Works of Mercy tell us to “Shelter the Homeless.” What can we do? Words to Ponder This Week:

♦ We can see if the Diocese of Monterey is involved with a local homeless shelter and find out how to volunteer.

♦ Contact Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Monterey for opportunities to help. ♦ We can donate time and money to organizations that build homes for those in need.

Habitat for Humanity is one of these organizations. ♦ We can call the local shelter that helps the homeless and ask if they are in need of bed-

ding, blankets, soap, shampoo, towels, socks, or warm outer clothing. Anything would bring comfort to a person seeking shelter. The list is endless! Donate!

♦ We can remember that need does not end with the holidays when most folks donate. The need is every day, all year round.

♦ We can pray for the homeless and help our children and grandchildren to recognize the needs of others by showing our own works of mercy.

—Happy New Year, Blessings, Bobbie Herndon
