Several years ago, our family's longtime neighbor died' She had no children. My
mom had helpedher in her later years, so we weren't surprised when she received
some money from the estate. What was truly surpris-ing, though, was that a check
arrived at my house as well. I hadn't done anything to deserve this money; I had
always been polite and kind to our neighbor and had visited her sometimes, but I
was shocked at her unwarraRted generosity. Without knowing it, I had become an i
heirto this lovely woman.
On this Solemnity of the Epiphany, we celebrate ,o-ur-o.v1/L.rnexpected-:
inheritance{he quite undeserved gift of Jesus. Saint Paul writes that the Gentiles i
are "co-heirs" to this great gift, but what have we done to deserve such grace? Our
culture constantly tells us how much we "deserve'-you've worked hard, so treat
yourself to a new outfit, a giant bowl of ice cream, an expensive car.
But in the simplest of places-the tiniest of towns, this little hamlet ofBethlehem-comes a gift we could never do enough to deserve. The magi
recognized this-they prostrated themselves in homage and were changed by
their encounter with Jesus. They "went home a different way"-not just physicalln
but spiri-tually.
Now that the Christmas season is winding down and the long-awaited gifts have
been unwrapped and put away, maybe we can look at the gift of Jesus with
Epiphany eyes. May we welcome Jesus today like an unexpected inheritance check
in our mailbox-with delighted hearts, humble spirits, and grateful souls.

,'. No matter how much you offer, what remains is always more; and you will be
giving nothing that is your own because all things come from God. And just as a
man iannot overtake his own shadow, which receded with every forward step and
always stays the same distance. . ln the same way also we cannot outdo God in our
gifts, for we do not give anything that is not his or that surpasses his own bounty' "St. Gregory Nazianzen (+j9o)

an argument with afundanrcntalistfriendwho in,sists the Epiphnny happened exactly as it says inthe Bible. I keep say-ing there's no iuay it could have.
Wlw is nght? Cene
a Dear Gene.A Catholics believe that each book of the Bible needs to be
appreciated accord-ing to the principles of its own literarygenre. 'We don't look to the Gospels for modern criticalhistory or unbiased biographicaVreporcorial fact-telling.
The four Gospels were written under the inspiration ofthe Holy Spirit. Each Gospel writer uses human skill tocraft a true story, presenting the saving mystery of ourLord's life, death, and resurrection so that readers may
come to know Christ, share his life, and be saved.
Every story in the Gospels is shaped to communicatesauing truth, but not every story is told as a direct'Just thefacts, ma'am" report of sequential events. So there is sauing
sense in which yes, the Epiphany happened exactly as itsays in Matthew 2:1"-12. And there is a more literal sense inwhich no, the Epiphany probably did not happen exactlyas it's recounted.
What is most certain is the Gospel's saving message ofthe birth of our true King, the light to all nations, beforewhom we offer homage and who, when we encounterhim, will change our lives and send us home in a newpath.

DID YOU KNOW THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A FOURTH WISE MAN?
The Story of the Other Wise Man is a short novel or long short story by
Henry van Dyke. lt was initially published in 1895 and has been reprinted
many times since then, including a "centennial edition" published in 1996
by Ballantyne Books. A great bookto read aloud.
