SOME TRENDS, BUT STILL QUESTIONS This season’s year-over-year decline in viewership for NFL football across all broadcast and cable networks is a hot issue, as networks and marketers try to figure out what is going on. Pivotal Research Group analyst Brian Wieser has been crunching the numbers because of the importance of the NFL to the networks and advertisers. “On a live + 3-day basis, NFL games accounted for 8.6% of all TV viewing during the first five weeks of this season, and a significantly higher share of the viewing for networks with rights to air its games, including CBS, Disney’s ESPN, FOX, NBC and the NFL Network. With higher- than-average pricing for ad inventory, the programming is disproportionately important beyond those viewing shares in terms of ad revenue, which marketers prize because of the still-relatively high ratings,” Wieser notes. “Networks’ affiliate sales efforts and the health of the market for retransmission consent holds up in part because of the value of the programming to consumers, who are in turn generally willing to pay relatively more to their MVPDs for access to that programming as well,” he added. Over the first five weeks of the current NFL season, the analyst finds that aggregated viewing in terms of person- hours has declined by 13.2% on a live + same-day basis for all people 2+. For Adults 18-49, viewing has declined by 14.1% on a live + same-day basis. However, Wieser says viewing per person is slightly worse at -14.6% on a live + same day basis 2+ and -15.1% 18-49. The incremental declines are because current year results are boosted by growth in the population. “It appears the decline is at least partially specific to NFL game programming rather than to football or total TV consumption, as college football programming on a live + same-day basis is up by 0.5% (2+),” the analyst wrote. Looking at where the changes in viewing per person are significant vs. the overall averages, Wieser notes a significant difference in viewing per person when comparing households with more than $75k in income, down 14.1%, but in homes with less than $75k in income, viewing declines are 19.0%. He also found some differences based on ethnicity and education. But the drops are widespread, so more data is needed as the season goes on. SPECTRUM AUCTION ROUND ENDS QUICKLY Wireless broadband companies kept their wallets closed and the forward auction portion of Stage Two incentive auction ended after a single round at $21.5 billion bid. “It looks to us like the quick end was because either one bidder dropped out or one bidder chose to reduce their demand by one block per license area,” said Wells Fargo Securities analyst Marci Ryvicker in a quick note—adding that the rules stated that the forward auction simply ends when bidding activity has stopped for Category 1 blocks in the 40 high-demand markets. The amount of TV spectrum to be cleared comes down with each stage, so we now move from 114MHz to 108MHz for Stage 3, with the FCC expected to announce auction details next week. Ryvicker has long been of the opinion that the auction will succeed at Stage 4, with 84MHz to be cleared at about $30 billion of gross proceeds.
