Low cost was the top factor that persuaded respondents to pay for streaming content. More than one-third (34%) of respondents chose that as a reason for signing up for a streaming video service. The survey noted that although more people are travelling, they are doing so for a shorter duration. Americans will go on vacation this summer for an average of 1.4 weeks, down from 1.7 weeks in 2016. With budgetary constraints on the rise globally, most travelers are electing to vacation within the confines of their own borders this summer. 41% of Americans said they will travel to U.S. destinations this summer. The same is true for the French (63%) and Italians (56%). COMPETITIVE INFO Snapchat’s growth is subsiding, reports Digital News Daily. The annual rate at which people are downloading the app has dropped by 22% over the first two months of the second quarter, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower. Worse yet, downloads in Apple’s App Store were down by 40% in April and May, year-over-year. But, BusinessInsider.com offers some support for Snapchat in their venture into TV-like programming. Video episodes are posted in Snapchat Discover for 24 to 48 hours and then disappear, giving people a reason to tune in. Partners like A&E, CBS and NBC supply content. The report says the app (not necessarially the programming) reaches 45% of 18-34 years olds in the U.S. on a given day — nine times more than the average daily reach on this demographic of the top 15 TV networks and nearly five times more than the top TV network.

BUSINESS BYTES There’s been a lot of discussion lately about what can be done with the space vacated when department stores close, and here’s one interesting idea. The Southdale Center in Edina, Minnesota will acquire a different kind of tenant to replace J.C. Penney in a three-story building: Life Time fitness centers will open early in 2019 with what is being called an “athletic resort.” Plans are for indoor and outdoor pools as well as a bistro. The facility will also offer basketball leagues, chiropractic help, physical therapy, a proactive medical practice, yoga, weight loss, and nutrition education. Life Time currently operates almost 125 centers around the country and is expanding. Its CEO says his vision is to turn shopping centers into “healthy lifestyle villages.” National Automobile Dealers Association data through April finds the average dealership has taken in $18.995 million through the first four months of the year, 0.9% less than this point last year. Gross profit has fallen 0.5% to $2.249 million and expenses have risen by 3.7% to $2.205 million, creating a 9.5% decline in net profit to $450,772 from $498,046 last year. “Luxury” dealerships are suffering the most—NADA says those dealerships are down 16.4% in total sales while “mass market” dealerships are up slightly at a gain of 0.9%. While sales for the average dealership are down in both the new-vehicle and used-vehicle departments, the Service, Parts, and Body Shop department operations are up 1.5% at the typical dealership, with warranty work up to 19.2% of sales from 17.9% last year. Those operations account for just 12.3% of dealership sales, but 48.5% of dealership profits. General Motors plans to continue to reduce sales to rental car companies through at least next year, continuing a policy that has contributed to a loss in market share but an increase in profits. GM’s North American president said sales to rental fleets will fall by about 50,000 units this year and more next year, which will make four straight years of declines. GM’s sales to rental fleets were as high as 16.1% of total sales in 2014 and were down to 11.7% last year with the percentage likely to dip into single digits. By selling fewer vehicles to rental fleets, GM keeps the residual values of its vehicles higher, which improves the economics of retail leasing and that can put customers in the market for a new vehicle more often. Automotive News notes GM’s retail sales are up 0.3% this year while the overall industry is down 2%.

They own 443 radio stations, 38 in major markets including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. A quick look at the stock price tells the tale. Back in early 2014, Cumulus stock topped out at $64.04. When former Chief Executive Lew Dickey exited in September 2015, the stock was already an anemic $5.45. On Monday, Cumulus shares closed at 50 cents. Cumulus revenue was down 2.3% in 2016, but adjusted earnings were down over 20%. (NYPost.com)
