Symbols of the Holy Spirit (He who stands at one’s side)
Water: The Spirit is personally the living water welling up from Christ crucified as its source as promised earlier by Jesus when he proclaimed, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart shall flow rivers of living water’. (Jn 19:34) This is the Holy Spirit’s action in Baptism.
Anointing with oil: Jesus is the Christ or Messiah which means “the one anointed” by God’s Spirit, ( Lk 4:18/Acts 10:38) hence the symbolism of anointing with oil signifies the Holy Spirit. Anointing is the sacramental sign of Confirmation or “Chrismation” (1Jn 2) “You have been anointed by the Holy One”.
Fire: While water signifies birth and the fruitfulness of life given in the Holy Spirit, fire symbolizes the transforming energy of the Holy Spirit’s actions. Jesus said of the Spirit, “I came to cast fire upon the earth, and would that it were already kindled!” (Lk 12:49). So too, in the form of “tongues as of fire” the Holy Spirit rested on the disciples and filled them with himself at Pentecost (Acts 2:3)
Finger: It is by “the finger of God” that Jesus casts out demons (Lk 11:20). God’s law was written on tablets of stone by “the finger of God” (Ex 21:18), and the “letter from Christ” is written “with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts” (2 Co 3:3).
Dove: Christian art traditionally uses a dove to suggest the Spirit, since the Gospels record that when Jesus was baptized in the Jordan, “the Heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him” (Mt 3:16).
All these symbols represent the action of the Spirit and should not be mistaken for the Person of the Holy Spirit (for instance, the dove is a symbol, and not a photo, of the Spirit). They signify movement , dynamism, divine energy, and tell us that the Holy Spirit is God-In-action, achieving our sanctification and bringing us new life.
Eucaristic Adoration Every Monday All Saints-St. Hedwig’s 8:00 a.m.– 10:00 p.m. Every Saturday St. Stanislaus Kostka 6:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. St. Stanislaus has hours of prayer available for Adoration. Call Gene Bechtold 584-5694 Daily Mass Eucharistic Adoration is also held for one hour following daily Mass on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. No Adoration if there is a funeral on that day.
Dear Friends, The Feast of Pentecost is finally here! Throughout the Easter Season we heard about the promise of the Advocate, and in last Sunday’s readings for Feast of the Ascension, Jesus tells his disciples to wait for the promise of the Father. After much waiting and preparation, the disciples receive a gift bigger than they could have ever possibly imagined. Namely, the gift of God's love poured into their hearts through the Holy Spirit. In today’s readings and throughout the whole book of Acts, we see the outward effects of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. But what happened interiorly to the little rag tag group of disciples to cause such a transformation? The Holy Spirit is a revelation of the love of the Father. This means that at Pentecost, the disciples had an overwhelming experience of God’s love because God’s love was poured into their hearts! Their stony hearts were shattered into hearts of flesh capable of receiving God’s love and giving God’s love. With the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, the early Church spread like wildfire! God’s love, life and power had been poured out upon the disciples, and they couldn’t resist spreading the Gospel. God’s love has been poured into our hearts, too! Do you know the Love of God? Do you cherish the great gift of the Holy Spirit that was given to you at Baptism and strengthened in Confirmation? The same spirit that anointed Jesus rests upon us and urges us to proclaim the mighty deeds of God. As we celebrate today’s great feast, let’s ask for a deeper outpouring of the Holy Spirit so that we too can know the Love of God, and in turn, proclaim that love to all the ends of the earth. ~Kristin Molitor

Sanctity of Life
Many Blessings to:
Father Derek Weichmann who was ordained into the Priesthood on
June 3rd. Eternal God, please bless our priests, who
represent you on this earth. Make them more greatly aware of the grace that you pour out
through them when they minister the sacraments, and help them to fall more deeply in love with You after each and every Mass that they celebrate. Please strengthen our priests,
who shepherd your flock, when they are in doubt of their faith, that they may be
examples of your Truth and guide us always on the path to you.
We ask these things of You Eternal Priest. Amen.
