The COVID-19 virus and the suspension of public Masses has been a difficult cross to receive this Lent. While this cross may be heavy, it’s not meant to be carried alone. In the Fifth Station of the Cross, Jesus teaches us that sometimes we need a Simon of Cyrene to help us carry our crosses and sometimes we need to be a Simon of Cyrene to help others carry their crosses. Suffering becomes beautiful when it leads us to deeper communion with one another.

I know the quarantine has made it difficult for us to be in communion with one another, but even though we cannot physically gather, we can take comfort knowing that through our baptism in Christ, we are always united to one another. Now, more than ever, we need to commit to one another through prayers and sacrifices. While Masses may be suspended, the graces of prayer are available to us and they are real. Your prayers matter and do effect change.

Pray for the health and safety of our priests. Pray for those who are suffering from the coronavirus. Pray for our healthcare workers. Pray for those who are scared. Pray for those who are lonely. Take this time in quarantine to build up the Suffering Body of Christ.

During this time of crisis, let’s do what Christians do best: love. Let’s pay attention to the members of our community who may be suffering physically, materially, emotionally or spiritually. Let’s step forward and be Simon of Cyrene for them.

Let’s also have the humility to ask for help. Remember, crosses are not meant to be carried alone. If Jesus needed help with His cross, you will need help with yours.

During Lent, Jesus invites you to share in His suffering, but He wants to share in your suffering, too. Lean into Him, and let this time of suffering move you towards greater intimacy with Him.

Stay healthy everyone! Our Central Office will be closed to visitors due to the concern over the Coronavirus. Please continue to call and email us.

Please call the Central Office if you would like be added or taken off the prayer list, or if you are homebound and would like to receive a bulletin..

Coronavirus or flu/cold symptons ~from Guangdong Province, China Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of 78 degrees. If someone sneezes with it, it moves about 10 feet before it drops to the ground. If it falls on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours some sources say longer. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours (or more) Drinking a lot of warm water is helpful. Wash your hands frequently so as not to spread it to other surfaces. Don’t rub your eyes or touch your face without washing hands first. You should gargle as a prevention. A simple salt in warm water will help or apple cider vinegar. The symptoms: It will first infect the throat, so you’ll have a sore throat for 3 to 4 days. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs causing Pneumonia. This takes about 5 to 6 days more. With the pneumonia comes a high fever and difficulty breathing. Please take this seriously. Social distancing is very important in order to protect each other.
