Lenten Study Open to Congregation The Parlor Class has chosen to take a break for Lent from its study of the Gospel of John in order to interact with one another by using a video

series featuring the presentations and writings of Max Lucado. Beginning on Sunday, March 5 at 9 A.M. the class will spend five weeks with a course entitled: “He Chose the Nails.” This course is the companion course to the one the Parlor Class, plus some guests who joined us, enjoyed during the 2016 season of Advent, i.e. “Because of Bethlehem.” The session themes for this Lenten course are as follows. 1. He Chose to Be One of Us, March 5 2. He Chose to Forgive Us, March 12 3. He Chose to Invite Us Into His Presence, March 19 4. He Chose to Love Us Forever, March 26 5. He Chose to Give Us Victory, April 2 In these sessions, Max Lucado will examine “the gifts that Christ gave at his crucifixion. These include not only the gift of the cross, but also the gift of the thorns, the nails and the empty tomb. The cross is rich with God’s gifts of grace, and as we unwrap them, we will hear him whisper, ‘I did it just for you’.” The cost of the Student’s Book for this video course will be $7.50. We have ordered a dozen copies of this resource, but are open to ordering more copies if more than 12 people choose to participate in this class. There will be a sign-up sheet for “He Chose the Nails” in the Narthex beginning this Sunday, February 19. Add your name to this sheet if you’d like to be part of the five-session Lenten experience. For more information about this matter, please speak to Ed Linberg, who will serve as the Facilitator for this learning experience for adults.

Sr. Adult Ministry Meeting The Senior Adult Ministry group meets next Tuesday, February 21, 2017

at 12 noon in Chapman lounge. Our speaker for the day is Malcom ( Mac ) Trevor. Mac is a retired Foreign Service Office and will discuss the purpose and duties of Foreign Service Officers in other countries and in the U.S. He and his wife Patty both served in the Foreign Service and have very different experiences. We are hoping that she can come in the future to share with us as well. They both live at Walnut Village where Barbara and Gordon Fenters live. Barbara has heard some of their stories and arranged for Mac to share with us. We will also be finalizing plans for the Alzheimer's Service on Wed, March 8. Please plan to come.

Call for Clothing We continue to need your donations of warm clothing, shoes, blankets, socks for men and women etc. Also if you have any eye glasses and/or umbrellas you can part with, they will be very much appreciated. Thank you, Phil Forbes, Coordinator The churches have to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless. But they have also to remember that the answer to homelessness is homes, not shelters. What the poor and downtrodden need is not piecemeal charity but wholesale justice.” – WILLIAM SLOANE COFFIN

It’s on Again! We will be sharing the Tri Tip Sales with Casa. We have enough people to staff one week a month

(Second Thursday)and the youth have decided to do a week. (Fourth Thursday.) If you would like to help, I am sure we can find a task for you. Thanks, The Outreach Ministry

Mitten Tree Project Christmas 2016

It was an exceptional year for the Mitten Tree! Because of the generosity of our congregation and friends of FCC members we were able to provide many needed items for our guests.

Everyone was able to choose something

from the tree: Scarves, hats, mittens.

We were able to give everyone a pair of

socks. We would like to thank everyone

in their thoughtfulness for purchasing

high quality thick (some waterproof)

socks!

We had a lot of the knit gloves and were

able to give these out as an “extras” in

addition to what was selected off of the

Mitten Tree the last couple of weeks.

Last year one of our friends brought

large candy bars (chocolate and white

chocolate peppermint) and we found

that people were so delighted to receive

a candy bar we continued it this year.

Last year we had many requests from

men wanting larger gloves. We asked

and we received! The men were very

appreciative.

Thank you all so much. As a result of

your generosity the Mitten Tree Project was

able to provide items to help over 200 people

stay warm.

Diane Daugherty, Susan Harless

Volunteers Needed Habitat for Humanity in Orange

County has informed us that many of their build sites were ruined as a result of flooding. Thankfully, True Value Hardware has donated to them a huge amount of materials, enough to build six or more houses! Habitat will be unloading these materials over the course of four days at the Anaheim Convention Center and they need MANY volunteers to assist them.

The day they need the most help is Tuesday, February 21st (although they still do need some more on Monday the 20th if you are not available Tuesday).

Hours: 7:00 A.M. - 1:30 P.M. or 12:30 – 6:00 P.M.

Requirements: 16 or older. Must be able to lift 20-40 lbs. Close-toed shoes, but they do not need to be hard shoes.

You will receive: Free parking, tee shirt, and lunch Please let Donna know if you are available so she can tell Habitat how many and which shift they are available to work. Thank you in advance for your help. Jesus said” Let the little children come to me.” Mark 10_14 More than 2000 children are being held in family detention centers in the US awaiting asylum hearings. Week of Compassion patners help settle more than 7000 refugees in the United States every year. This year those numbers are expected to increase. Every dollar you give to WoC will help with both of these projects.

Save your Recycled Cards

Our Outreach Ministry Team will be collecting the fronts of any cards (see directions below) and sending them to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children who recycles your used greeting cards and creates new holiday and all-occasion greeting cards. Recycled cards are sold to support our programs and services for abused, neglected and homeless children, young adults and families. More than 30 years ago, wishing to show our donors’ appreciation for making St. Jude’s Ranch for Children possible, the idea was conceived to turn the previous year’s Christmas cards into “new” cards for the coming season. The recipients were so delighted when they received the unique “thank you,” that they requested to purchase the special cards. The program soon expanded to include all-occasion greeting cards. Operated by Kids’ Corp., a program designed to teach entrepreneurship skills, the children at the Ranch participate in making the new “green” cards by removing the front and attaching a new back. The result is a beautiful new card made by children and volunteers. Only the card front can be used (please check to be sure the backside of the front of the card is clear of any handwriting, etc.) We cannot accept Hallmark, Disney or American Greeting cards. A 5″ x 7″ size or smaller is preferred.

You may purchase cards in our online store or call (877) 977-SJRC (7572). If you have any questions about how the card program works please call (702) 294-7100 or email [email protected].

Cards are sold in packets often for $17.00 including shipping and are available in the following categories: General Christmas, Religious Christmas, Easter, Birthday, Thank You, Sympathy, Thanksgiving, Get Well, Anniversary, All-Occasion Blank Greeting

Week Of Compassion Offering To Be Received This Sunday And Next Sunday

The 2017 Week of Compassion Offering will be received on each of the next two Sundays. We have received some gifts for this annual special offering. Advance gifts, received on February 5 and 12, total $ 510. As a result of these gifts, we have a good beginning in reaching our goal for this offering in 2017. That goal, by the way, is $2,507.00, which is a 5% increase over our actual 2016 Week of Compassion Offering of $2325. To make your gift for the Week of Compassion Offering, use the special envelope which was included with the worship bulletin this past Sunday, or simply write “Week of Compassion” on the memo line of your check. Week of Compassion Offering envelopes will also be available on the counter in the Church Office and well as in the narthex. For many years, our Week of Compassion Offering has been the largest of the six special offerings we receive each year. In addition to the Week of Compassion, we remind you that our special offerings include Easter, Pentecost. Reconciliation, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Have you ever wondered why the Week of Compassion Offering is the one which generates the highest dollar total of all six of these special offerings? Probably not. But if we were to hazard a guess as to why this is so, the four brief paragraphs below probably provide key reasons as to why our congregation has supported the Week of Compassion Offering so well for so many years. By the way, this pattern that finds the Week of Compassion Offering the largest special offering each year is repeated in lots of other Disciples’ congregations as well. First, we know this offering provides us Disciples with an opportunity to make an immediate response to disasters whenever and wherever they happen in the world. It can be an earthquake in the Philippines, a tsunami in Japan, a flood in middle America, or a tornado in Texas which destroys property and leaves people injured or dead, with the way of life of those still living severely compromised after the disaster. It doesn’t matter what it is, historically we Disciples because of our support of the Week of Compassion Offering, are among the first responders. And, historically, especially in response to disasters in the US, we Disciples get involved in re-building the communities that have experienced disasters through Disciples Volunteering which is funded with Week of Compassion money. In recent years, our congregation has been part of re-building efforts supported by Week of Compassion funds in Joplin, Missouri; Moore, Oklahoma; and Loveland, Colorado. Second, we know this offering assists people in third-world countries by helping them dig wells to ensure a safe supply of water for their community; provide tools, and training in their use, to help farmers grow crops that have greater yields to help alleviate hunger; and encourages the planting of trees to both supply fresh fruit and to improve the air quality in poverty-stricken areas of the world. Third, we know this offering is used to address the needs of refugees—men, women and children, who are victims of war and strife in their native lands, such as Syria— as they seek to find a new life for themselves and their families because they cannot go back to their old life. Fourth, we know this offering is not used to bring glory to our denomination. Instead, it is used in partnership with other denominations who, like us Disciples, have a presence in many countries around the world, as well as working in partnership with ecumenical relief organizations that serve the needs of hungry people, like Heifer International and Church World Service. The ecumenical character of this offering gives meaning to the 2017 theme, i.e. “One!" We are grateful for FCC, Fullerton’s historic generous support for the Week of Compassion Offering. We are certain that 2017 will again find this offering well supported with gifts of just a few dollars from some individuals, to gifts in excess of $100 to $150, or even more, from other individuals, with all gifts depending upon the ability of each of us to give.
