Hello Calvert Staff, Students, and Families: After the snow, sleet, rain, and blizzards, it is nice to get back into the swing of things! The PTSA sponsored a soup and salad lunch for the entire staff on January 14th. The group shared that they enjoyed the time to visit, relax, and converse. We had our first annual Indoor Yard Sale on Saturday, February 20th. This was also a great time for all. Thanks go out to all of the NJROTC cadets for their hard work and, of course, to Commander Kletter for his great organizational skills. For future consideration, we are going to have our annual Basket Bingo on March 19th. Early bird specials will begin at 6:30 P.M. and doors will open at 5:30 P.M.. Please refer to the CHS website for all details, simply click on the PTSA link in the left-hand column. We are pleased with the turnout last year and hope to have many more avid Basket Bingo followers. Additionally, we will have our comedy night featuring Jason Linett on March 25th at 6:30 P.M. in the CHS auditorium. The cost is just $6 per person. His show is very enter-taining and proceeds will go toward scholarships for qualifying senior members of the PTSA. On a final note, the PTSA will have some board vacancies in the upcoming school year. Enclosed in this newsletter is a list of offices and descriptions of the duties. Please consider becoming involved because involvement really does equal success. Research shows that the families who are involved with their child's education enjoy the benefits which include higher overall student achievement.

Thank you, Sheryl Sweeney

from the PTSA

As Prom Season approaches, students will be shopping for the “perfect” dress that fits this special occasion. The CHS staff understands how these special dresses can be made and recognizes that most do not meet the dress code. We have elected to put out some guidelines on the dresses in order to help parents and students select appropriate ones for Prom Night. We want to avoid anyone having a bad experience if they show up to Prom in a dress that isn’t appropriate.

Dresses must be at least – not shorter than mid-thigh. Backless dresses must not be lower than the waist. Dresses should not have a long V-cut in the front or they should be modified if they are. Dresses should not be revealing or see-thru. Gentlemen should be dressed in formal attire - no shorts, sneakers

or jeans. In the past, our students have made good choices and always look very nice. We wanted to help our parents help their students make appropriate choices for this high school event. Thanks for you continued support.

Calvert High School NJROTC

Since the last newsletter, the NJROTC has been working hard and fast to make ends meet. Cadets worked hard to qualify for the Area FIVE Drill/Athletics/Academics Championship and received great news concern-ing the event. We were invited to the Area FIVE championships where out of 10 schools we placed 8th.

On February 9th cadets from the Air Rifle Team traveled to Camp Perry, Ohio to compete in the Navy

JROTC National Air Rifle Championship. The team placed 7th in the nation. Cadets Michael Trujillo placed 23rd, Ashley Brown 25th, Tad Evans 28th, Stephen Nicholas 70th, and Benjamin Squires 101. The team almost didn’t make it there because we got hit with a snow storm that almost held us back but we pulled through and got a Southwest flight to Ohio.

On January 13th some cadets traveled to Wisp Resort for their downhill orienteering trip. While on the trip, cadets learned about downhill orienteering, leadership, and hypothermia but also found time to have a blast skiing and snowboarding. Cadets were able to shoot simulation and use night vision goggles when they traveled to Quan-tico on February 25th. It is one of our most important trips. The Cadet Ball held on February 27th at the Solomons Holiday Inn was one of the best ever. Cadets and guests enjoyed a night of dancing and fun. We are looking forward to March 6th when the cadets will travel to Gaithersburg for a drill meet. There the Athletic Team will be standing in inspection to get ready for Area FIVE which is held in Virginia Beach later this month.

Census 2010 Take part in the census. People who par-ticipate in the census will help our county obtain federal and state funding and pro-vide valuable information for planning medical centers, roads and much more. Census information will help determine which areas need new schools or services for the elderly. You and your neighbors need to fill out the forms and send them back. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share your answers with the IRS, FBI, Welfare, Immigration or any other agency. Participate in the census. It’s important and safe.

Count Yourself in Calvert County’s Future

In 1970 the population of Calvert County was 20,682, by 1990 it was 51,372, and by 2000 it was 74,563. How many people live in Calvert County in 2010? The Census Bu-reau needs your help to answer that question. Government agencies and private companies use census statistics to determine where to locate services. Send in your cen-sus form as of April 1, 2010. It’s important to our community that you are counted.

Focus on Children

The census counts everyone, in-cluding children; it is not just for adults. Funds for school districts are based on the census. Local agencies use the information to plan their services, such as Head Start. EVERYONE living at your address on April 1, 2010, should be counted, even if they are not related to you. The law guarantees your answers are completely confidential. Partici-pate in the census. It’s in our hands!

Dear Parent/Guardians of Graduating Seniors, On the night of graduation, June 10, 2010, there will be a free graduation party for all seniors. This year we are going to Patuxent River Naval Base. The school buses will depart Calvert High School at 10:30 P.M. and students should arrive no later than 10 P.M. This party will last from 11:00 P.M. until 3:30 A.M. At this time, we will re-board the school buses and head back to Calvert for a wonderful hot breakfast. We anticipate breakfast lasting from 4:00 A.M. until 4:45 A.M. During breakfast, students will get the chance to win wonderful prizes! As always, each senior is allowed to bring one guest. The guest must be at least a junior in high school, or under the age of 21. Due to the cost of the facility, there will also be a $20 non-refundable payment received by each guest. This party is called Project Graduation and is partly subsidized by the Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse, Inc. (CAASA). The seniors will be provided with plenty of entertainment such as swimming, basketball, volleyball, movies, dancing, and bowling. The purpose of Project Graduation is to provide a safe, alcohol, and drug free place for students. We urge you to allow your senior graduate to attend this event. This is a wonderful ending to their high school career. It has always been successful in the past. Please have your child return the signed contracts as soon as possible. Please understand that no contracts will be accepted after May 7th. Again, we strongly ask that you give permission for your child to go. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email or by phone.

Many Thanks,
