ThanksfortheEyeglasses

Pam picked up the eyeglasses and willdeliver them to her husband, Doug, who willsend them to the Lions Club. We collected 31pairs of glasses.

Keep them coming. The tray is in theworkroom/kitchen next to the phone or leaveon the counter and Donna will put away.

ThoughtsonPrayer  While praying don't picture yourselftrembling as you slowly approach a strange,

wizard of Oz type character standing behind acurtain to listen to you as you plead your case.Instead, with joy in your heart, picture yourselfcomfortably sitting at your Heavenly Father'sknee as you share all your problems &concerns privately with Him. Then be still, with peace in your heart as you quietly wait tohear His answer to your prayers.

Inspired words from Phil Forbes

It’sHappeningOnSunday  Our first OutreachProject of 2015 is happening

this Sunday. It’s the Souper Bowl of Caring—an activity that has some connection to afootball game that’s also happening thisSunday. What is the Souper Bowl of Caring?

It’s a nationwide phenomenon begun some 20years ago by the Youth Group in either NorthCarolina or Virginia that decided to encourageits congregation to collect canned goodsand/or money to purchase same to give to alocal food bank. What started in one church ofone denomination has now spread tothousands of churches in multipledenominations.

For years our Youth Group hascoordinated our participation in the Souper

Bowl of Caring. Members of our Youth Groupwill be in the narthex before and after theworship services to receive our donations ofcanned goods and/or money in support of theSouper Bowl of Caring. What is received willbe donated to Pathways of Hope fordistribution to families and individuals whoneed help making the food stretch a few extradays or even a week each month. And that’sthe pattern all over the country. Yourgenerosity will be greatly appreciated! And,thanks to our Youth Group for taking on thisproject once again.

Wear your team’s favorite jersey, T-shirtor at least colors.

“God is doing great thing at Fullerton First Christian.” This is how Iended last week’s note. I am convinced that the future of ourcongregation will be the result of our worshiping together. Yet our

worship attendance and participation should not be the result of obligation or compulsion. Ourworship participation should be the direct result of our experience with God. John Calvin wrote, “Toknow God is to be changed by God; true knowledge of God leads to worship.” Dynamic worship iswhere people come together because they have seen, felt and experienced God during their busylives. My bridge partner recently had a reconnecting with God at a retreat in a Trappist Monastery. He had not been attending worship due to the negative feelings he had about his church. Scandaland deceit seemed to rob him of seeing any value in worship. He would attend Protestant worshipwith his wife; but not his own church. So it is marvelous to see his renewed devotion to attendingMass. He has remarked that the church is always packed with families, which has not been hisexperience when he has attended his wife’s Methodist church. It seems to me that faithful Catholicssee attending Mass each week as an obligation of faith regardless of whether they expect to hear greatsermons or artist musical performances. His story has caused me to reflect on the decline inattendance now being experienced by many Evangelical churches. In a recent article in

“Faithstreet.com,” Kazimierz Bem writes that many churches which recently experienced hugegrowths in worship attendance can expect to see fewer in worship in the next year. Many of the mostfaithful attendees who attended four Sundays per month will reduce to three Sundays per month. He writes that many say they “get more” out of serving the homeless, tutoring Latinos in English, orsinging in the community choir. And that seems to be the heart of the problem. Evangelical churcheshave experienced great growth because people say they came for what they “got out of” eachworship event. But what do they bring to worship besides a need to be entertained and inspired? For those of us responsible for planning worship, we are always mindful that if people don’t get apositive experience of faith in worship, they are less likely to return. Pastor Dale has been asking usto reflect on our own faith journeys. He is challenging each of us to share those experiences withsomeone else during this week. As we reflect and share about how God is working in each of ourlives, I hope our worship will be a place where people are anxious to celebrate the powerful acts ofGod. As John Calvin said, “true knowledge of God leads to worship.” I hope God leads you toworship on Sunday. See you in church!

In love, Bob Hasty, Worship Ministry Team Chair

No Excuse Sunday

To make it possible for everyone to attend church this Sunday, we are goingto have a special

“No Excuse Sunday:” Cots will be placed in the Narthex for those who say, “Sunday is my only dayto sleep in.” We will distribute “Stamp Out Stewardship” buttons for those that fee the church isalways asking for money. We will have steel helmets for those who say “The roof would cave in if Iever came to church.”
