Year of Report: 2009-10

Part A : The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards

quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year

The following plan of action was put in place for the Academic year 2009-10 by the IQAC:

1. Intervention of alumni and guest faculty members in syllabus revision. Preparation of course

ware, preparation of compendium of Capstone, Summer and NGO Projects. All the three

interventions were successfully completed.

2. Evolving a mechanism to review and monitor the process of delivery as per the industry

standards. KRAs for the faculty members were designed.

3. A Plan of Students engagement in placement activities and constituting team leads was made

and implemented.

4. Proposal to apply for one additional batch of PGDM Marketing was made.

5. A suggestion to set up some Centers of Excellence was given by IQAC and the same was set up

by the name “Centre for Supply Chain & Logistics Research”.

6. The composition of the IQAC was reviewed and changed.

Part B:

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution:

PG: MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES:

The objectives of the program are to enable its students to:

Understand the fast changing global environment and draw implications to manage

necessary changes in the organizations.

Acquire and assimilate knowledge and skills through various basic and specialized courses.

Develop analytical skills and positive attitude to manage change effectively in the

organization.

To sensitize the students about value based education and societal needs and well- being.

To develop soft skills and leadership qualities.

In order to achieve these objectives, we took the following initiatives:

A. Curricular aspects: The program design of PGDM Programs was designed precisely to

incorporate all aspects of teaching- learning through Curricular, co-curricular and extra-

curricular activities. Developing Knowledge, skills and attitudes was the underlying

Page 2: The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC · Part A : The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome

philosophy of the programs. Various interventions such as continuous evaluation through

variety of class based activities, written examinations, guest lectures, industry visits, study

forums, workshops and conerences, participation and presentation of research papers by

students in various conferences, student led UTKARSH committees and their functions,

NGO intern-ship, summer internship and finally the capstone projects were undertaken.

I. PGDM program is two year full time programs divided into six terms. There are 38-

40 courses (including capstone project/summer project/NGO project) for PGDM

program. In addition to the above courses, students are required to complete one

summer project and one NGO project for PGDM Program. The summer project is to

be undertaken at the end of the first year (i. e. first three terms) during May and June

for a period of 6 to 8 weeks, whereas the NGO project is done in the month of

February for PGDM students. The summer project has to be necessarily assigned by

some company; however students have to work under the guidance of an ITM faculty.

II. In order to achieve learner-centric pedagogy, course faculties are asked to prepare

course outlines/course wares and post it in their respective folder which is accessible

to each student. Course faculty is also asked to post his/her teaching PPTs, Notes,

Assignments also in his/her respective folder. This is the best use of IT in

management education. Common Batch ID of students also helps post important

circulars to students.

extracurricular activity and participation in the committee activities is evaluated by the faculty

coordinator by giving marks. Students are also sensitized about the issues of poverty,

underdevelopment and other related issued by aspiring them to the target audience, by taking up

certain programs through extra curricular activities. ITM music circle also organizes various events

for the local community.

3. Innovations in curricular design and transaction:

PG: MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES:

Syllabus Revision Committee meetings were organized for Finance, Marketing, HR, IT and

Operations. The agenda of the meeting were to review the existing syllabus of all PGDM

programs and proposed modifications any in relation to both Core and Ancillary subjects as well.

The committees consist with Director, Dean- Academics, and Deputy Directors, concerned

faculty members, ITM Alumni members and professionals, corporate from several sectors for all

the PG programmes.

P. G. Lab is another innovation which helps students in ice breaking with fellow students and

learn various basic concepts of management through games with fun.

Introduction of special addresses by eminent personalities from different walks of life helps

student know what is not taught in the class rooms.

Institutional arrangements have been made with a view to ensure continuous up gradation and

Benchmarking of syllabus with that of leading national and international academic and

industrial institutions to find the gaps and taking appropriate corrective measures.

ITM Alumni Association participates in delivering guest lectures by alumni of ITM, on syllabus

and organizing mock shows on GD/PI before the placement of the students.

Using simulations as a tool of innovative pedagogy.

Faculty and students are the core-producers of academic excellence. This is sought to be

ensured through the joint capstone projects, NGO projects on the one hand and kicking off the

activities of Finance forum, Marketing forum and HR forum on the other.

Students offer suggestions for further strengthening of support services through their

representatives by different UTKARSH committees (18) constituted for the effective

implementation of academic and administrative programs of the institution.

Establishment of student-led committees helps in obtaining qualitative output which helps the

administration in introducing new programmes, innovative methods of teaching – learning

process and major changes in evaluation procedure etc. Design and implementation of

prospectus, brochure and student handbook are certain aids which help student know entire

process of student progression.

Page 7: The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC · Part A : The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome

curriculum development, transaction of teaching-learning process, effective implementation of

extension activities and strengthening of support services.

Students participate in industrial visits, field trips, internship programmes, preparation of reports

based on capstone projects, summer projects and study projects /reports, etc.

Regular conduct of orientation programs at the commencement of academic year and lectures

are arranged by inviting eminent speakers from industry and academia. Some of the issues

The idea behind introduction of capstone project was to involve students and faculty in research

and help them to apply their learning through the program and bring it out in the form of

capstone project.

A Crash Program for Non – Placed Students was conducted.

UG: HOSPITALITY PROGRAMMES: B.Sc. (Hospitality Studies)

The college has introduced remedial classes that have helped the students to cover up their

back log, if any. More than that students get a chance to brush up their skills further.

Another innovation is that of preparing question banks which has helped ease the

burden of students and improve success rate in examinations.

The College being an affiliated to the Mumbai University & Q.M Univers i ty

does not have the option of formulating its own curriculum. Still the courses

offered have their relevance to the institutional goals and objectives. The college

aims to inculcate the highest intellectual standards through rigorous academic

commitment & discipline. Students are inspired to aspire to higher level of academic

achievement by mastering the subject chosen to study. The Institution strives towards

overall development of students and quality enhancement of learners through

various aspects of holistic personality development, orientation programs and life

skill enrichment programs conducted during their four years of academics that focuses

etiquettes, group discussion, global warming, awareness on environment through guest

lecture, moral and ethical values, role and scope of women in hospitality and tourism

industry.

4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started:

PG: MANAGEMENT PROGRAMMES:

Interdisciplinary learning is a methodology that includes learners from different disciplines

that work closely together contributing their knowledge, skill set and experience to support and

enhance the contributions and attributes of each discipline. Interdisciplinary learning initiatives are

proliferating throughout higher education at an unprecedented rate. They can be found in general

management education also and new pedagogies, such as collaborative learning, research and

problem-based learning; in the use of technology, such as distance learning and web-based

instruction; and in new curricular designs, such as learning communities, capstone courses, and

service-learning.

In ITM the PGDM programs do offer interdisciplinary learning. Management as it is an

integrated discipline. Through its PGDM management programs, it offers various courses on

Finance and Accounting, General Management/Entrepreneurship, International Business, Marketing

Management, Organization Behavior and Human Resource Management, Quantitative Methods &

Decision Sciences, Technology and Operations Management etc. The focused programs such as

PGDM in international business, PGDM in retail management and marketing, PGDM in human

resource management, PGDM in financial markets and PGDM in marketing by and large involve

interdisciplinary approach of teaching and learning. Since a manger has to be a specialist as well as

a generalist, he is required to possess the domain knowledge of various disciplines mentioned

above.

That is why all the multidisciplinary compulsory courses related to accounting,

communications, basic marketing, basic finance, economics, basic IT, operations and basic

management and human resource management become the part of first year courses as far as the

PGDM General Management programs concerned. As regards the focused programs like PGDM -

HR, PGDM – RMM and PGDM – IB the interdisciplinary compulsory courses are taught and

learned in the first couple of terms and subsequently a student graduates to focused courses.
