Part - A
The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the
year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the
end of the year.
2008-09 has been the year during which the institution was accredited by NAAC.
While preparing for approaching NAAC for accreditation, the institution identified college
level objectives covering various important activities in the institution. The aspects of
planning and implementation of these objectives were assigned to senior professors/HODs
and were supported by a committed core group of faculty members from various
departments. The core group along with the objective leader would chalk out programs and
suggest activities and approaches for facilitating the implementation of the objectives in all
the departments. The departments would in-turn have a person who would coordinate with
the above team and initiate implementation activities in their respective departments.
The objectives were:
1. To achieve academic excellence by improving the full pass percentage in each and
every semester by at least 2 %
2. Updating laboratories to satisfy the requirements of the syllabus and beyond.
3. To have research cell in all eligible departments to facilitate research activities.
4. To associate with leading industries and institutions for furthering consultancy and
joint research activities.
5. To improve the competence of faculty and staff through training programs and
sponsorship for higher studies.
6. To encourage students to pursue co and extra curricular activities enabling overall
development of their personality.
2
In pursuance of the above objectives,
• two departments, namely, Applied Physics and Applied Chemistry were recognized
by Anna University as research centers during this academic year;
• some of the faculty members, namely, Mr. P C Kishore Raja, AP-CS, Mr S Ganesh
Vaidyanathan, AP-EC and Mr.N.Muthukrishnan, AP-ME, received grants from
Government funding agencies for conducting research activities;
• the institution has associated (signed MoUs) with three organizations (M/s Tractors
and Farm Equipments, M/s Super Auto Forge Limited, Central Leather Research
Institute, Adyar, Chennai) for pursuing joint activities in research and consultancy,
• many faculty and students participated in conferences and workshops.
• The overall pass percentage of the students in the odd semester has been 85.41 and
even semester 85.48, with a marginal increase in pass percentages as compared to
the previous year.
• The departments of Biotechnology (BT) and Civil Engineering (CE), which are
relatively new departments, planned to establish all the laboratories needed.
Accordingly, the laboratories have been established. CE department identified
laboratory requirements for the upcoming semesters and established their
laboratories accordingly.

Part - B
1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the
institution:
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES • To improve the performance of the teaching-learning process in the institution and
thereby improving the pass percentage of the students in the university examinations,
a ‘Centre for Innovative Teaching Methods (CITM)” was formed under the
directorship of a senior professor. The scope of this centre is to improve the teaching
and presentation capabilities of the faculty members. Some of the activities
implemented by the centre were (a) preparation of subject notes for all subjects and
sharing the same with the students at the end of each unit (b) conducting additional
classes for academically weak students (c) senior faculty monitoring the class room
delivery process of the junior faculty and submitting reports, thereby enabling the
faculty to improve.
• SVCE was a major sponsor for the Indo – German Workshop-cum-lecture series on
‘Computational Models and Methods’, conducted at IIT Madras. Many of our
faculty members and students attended this program and got benefited.
• Laboratory facilities were upgraded with computers of latest configuration and
software for the benefit of the students and faculty.
• Best Project Award is being awarded to the best projects in UG and PG.
• Students are motivated to excel in their examinations by awarding them merit and
merit cum means scholarships.
• Graduation Day was organised. The toppers in the university examinations and
internal assessments were given medals, certificates and cash awards.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
• A major thrust was given by the top management to improve research activities in
the college.
• A one day workshop on “Research Project Development” was conducted in the
institution to give awareness and to motivate faculty members to submit research
4
proposals to Government and Research Organizations to invite grants from those
organizations. As a result, three of our faculty secured funded projects from various
agencies.
• The issue of research in the institution was often the topic of discussion in the staff
council, the outcome of which would be shared with all the staff members. Cash
awards are given to faculty members for publication of technical papers in
international and national journals. More than 90 papers were published in journals
in the year 2008-09.
• Faculty and students are sponsored to present papers at international and national
conferences. 2 faculty members and 3 students were sponsored for international
conferences in 2008-09.
• SVCE conducted an International Conference on "Modern Trends in Materials
Technology" on January 19 and 20, 2009.
• The departments conducted many conferences and workshops for providing a
common platform to facilitate exchange of ideas among research scholars and
experts in various areas from academia and industry.
• The departments recognized as research centers were encouraged to take up research
scholars under their guidance for pursuing Ph.D. Accordingly 6 faculty members are
pursuing Ph.D, utilizing the facilities in the institution.
• Professors and faculty pursuing research were provided with personal computers of
latest configuration and Internet facility in their offices to improve research
activities. This year, as an initial step, 30 numbers of computers were provided to
individual faculty.
• The institution houses a Technology Innovation Centre which was established by the
SPIC Science Foundation this year. The centre conducts research in the areas of fuel
cells and faculty from across departments are encouraged to interact with the center
to conduct joint research activities. A batch of chemical engineering students have
done their final year projects in the center.
• Students and faculty are sponsored for presenting their research papers in
International / National Conferences.
5
EXTENSION ACTIVITIES
• The institution regularly interacts with industries to participate in mutually beneficial activities. SVCE has signed MoUs this year with – companies that have added to its existing associations with other industries. Through these associations, SVCE conducts such activities as providing opportunities to the students to do their projects in industry, placement, involving in consultancy and joint research activities, inviting experts from industry for guest lectures for the benefit of the students and also conduct conferences and workshops jointly.
• SVCE believes in all round development of its student community. It sponsors the Entrepreneurship Development Cell, housed in its premises and conducts various awareness programs and workshops for the benefit of the students from other colleges as well and aspirants. This year the cell has conducted 6 programs for the benefit of aspirants.
• The institution has a very active placement cell that provides campus placement opportunities to eligible students. The placement cell also contributes to the industry institute interaction activities of the institution. The cell was successful enough to place around 96 % of the eligible students in this year.
• Students are encouraged to participate in sports activities at inter zonal, zonal, university and higher levels. SVCE conducts Dr.A.C.Muthiah rolling trophy tournament in Cricket for Engineering Colleges and also tournaments in Ball Badminton, Basket Ball and Volley Ball.
