Japanese nabe with Chef Tamaki *NEW* Nabe is a winter hot pot dish in Japan. Learn to make the different flavour bases for the stock. We will make 2 hotpot dishes - kimchi, a Japanese-Korean fusion hotpot, and then sukiyaki, a traditional winter hotpot. Tuesday 21 July, 7 - 9 pm, cost: $55.

Gyoza with Chef Tamaki Gyoza is such a popular dish in Japanese restaurants. Chef Tamaki will teach you how to make gyoza easily in this hands on class. Tuesday 18 August , 7 - 9 pm, cost: $55.

Okonomiyaki with Chef Tamaki *NEW* Sometimes called a pancake, other times a Japanese vegetable fritter! Chef Tamaki will teach you to make this Japanese winter meal. Tuesday 15 September, 7 - 9 pm, cost: $55.

Drawing *NEW* Drawing skills can be a great introduction to other art mediums. This class is suitable for beginners and those wanting to expand their repertoire. Tuesdays, 2.30 - 4.30 pm starting 14 July,

Jewellery upcycling *NEW* Learn the basics of jewellery making while upcycling vintage pieces and found objects into new items of unique jewellery! This workshop covers the techniques, terms and tools of fashion-jewellery making. Friday 11 September, 6.30 - 9.30 pm,

PaintingThese classes are taught by a local painter who is an experienced teacher of various art media. Students explore a variety of techniques applied to a range of subject matters. The classes cater for all levels. Acrylics: starting Monday 13 July,

An introduction to mindfulness *NEW*Single session workshop to introduce you to the concepts of mindfulness and practice this modern day essential meditation style. Thursday, 3 September, 9.30 - 11 am, cost $25.

Mindfulness based stress reductionThis 8 week course in 2 parts helps you learn and practice living in the present and cope better with everyday life stressors. Participants will purchase a book and CD to use in daily practice. Led by qualified psychologists. 8 weeks starting Thursday 27 August, 7 – 9 pm, cost $220. Part 2 will be held in term 4.

Staying mindful This course aims to reconnect you to mindfulnesss or deepen your experience. 4 weeks starting Thursday 30 July, 6 - 7 pm, cost $60.

Nia *NEW TIME* Nia is a creative blend of martial arts, dance and healing practices that stimulates your brain and inspires your spirit. Nia offers barefoot grounded movement and cardiovascular conditioning set to a fun global beat. Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities. Pilates This class focuses on building strength and improving flexibility and agility. The class is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Weekly starting Monday 13 July, 10 – 11 am, cost $129 for 10 weeks.

Playgroups – parent/carer ledOur playgroup sessions are held in a large sunny room with a fantastic secure outdoor area. Carers, mums, dads and grandparents are all welcome. A great way to make new friends locally. Come and join in one of our popular playgroups. Limited vacancies. School holiday cooking classes *NEW* Your children will LOVE learning how to prepare and cook gyoza and okonomyaki on Tuesday and on Thursday be guided by Josie in all the fun steps of making pasta and some simple but delicious fillings. Tuesday 7 July and Thursday 9 July, 9.30 - 12.30 pm. $58 each. Suitable for 7+ years.

Health and wellbeingActive living 55 PlusA friendly, sociable class aimed at fall prevention, flexibility and core stability. Weekly starting 13 July, Mondays 8.45 – 9.45 am,

Bike riding groupsOur six bike riding groups are very popular and offer a mix of ride levels. We have vacancies in some groups including the Women on Wheels Wednesday and a new Thursday group. Free with SHNC membership.

Beginners riding group *NEW* We are taking expressions of interest for a 4 week introduction to bike riding for Tuesdays or Thursdays with a shorter route starting at 20 kms.

Laughter club Join this friendly group and laugh your way to improved physical and emotional wellbeing. Wednesdays, 8.30 - 8.50 am, starting 15 July. Free

ScrabbleEnjoy the challenge of words! This friendly group welcomes new players - experienced or beginners. 1st, 3rd and 5th Tuesdays starting 21 July, cost $4 per session.

Community, Social and Volunteer Activities“Blokes in the kitchen” cooking with JohnA group designed for men who find themselves in need of cooking and menu planning skills. Each session works to a set curriculum with recipes drawn from a wide range of standard favourites - Asian and eastern dishes, soups and baking too. Participants enjoy lunch together and take home their produce. Enjoy meeting and chatting to other men at the same time. Tuesdays, 14 & 28 July, 11 & 25 August, 8 September, cost $20 once-off joining contribution to cover shared costs. New participants must pay for 3 classes and then participate on a casual basis. $40 per session. Discount of $5 per session if paying for full term.

Drop in morning teaNewcomers are always welcome to this friendly get together in the Cottage Kitchen. Come into the office, and we will take you over and introduce you to some of the regulars. Weekly, starting Monday 13 July, 9.30 – 11.30 am, cost: $3 per session.

EDAR garden clubParticipants from EDAR look after the garden at the Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre on Thursday mornings.

Men’s discussion groupCome and join this engaging group to share your views about current events or other topics over morning tea. Fortnightly on Fridays starting 17 July, 9.30 - 11.30 am, cost: $4 per session.

VolunteersWe rely on volunteers to help keep our costs down at the Centre. Volunteers help out in a variety of roles: administration, Committee of Management, group leaders, heritage collection, music festival and helping to deliver the local Neighbourhood News. Please ask us how you can get involved in your local community.

Venue HireSurrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre has two venues available for hire.

The Chandler Room is a large, modern and light-filled octagonal room with a kitchen and fully fenced, grassed outdoor area.

The Cottage facing Bedford Avenue is a beautiful heritage building with a medium sized room, one smaller room and a kitchen opening onto an alfresco area.

Available for:

Parties - children’s parties and parties for adults of all ages!

Lunches/afternoon teas/dinners/meetings/workshops and seminars.

All facilities are wheelchair accessible.

Fees and EnrolmentsClass fees must be paid in full at the time of booking. Course times and classes are correct at the time of printing and are subject to occasional changes at the discretion of management. Classes will only run with sufficient enrolment. Refunds will not be given once classes commence without a medical certificate or where there are exceptional circumstances.

Memberships People who participate in programs at the Neighbourhood Centre are required to be members of SHNC. The membership fee contributes to the day to day running costs of the Centre, administration, overheads and other consumables, and enables the building to be maintained as a publicly available resource. The membership fee is $15 for the calendar year.
