Our proposed new Science Centre has gone to tender today.  Subject to a satisfactory result, work will commence in July.

CHINA GUESTS

In August our Huaibei sister school will be sending16 students (8 boys 8 girls) and 4 staff as part ofour exchange program .

Families of students in Year 5 (2013) will be offered thefirst opportunity to to host our guests.  Letters will be forwarded to our Year 5’s in the next fortnight.

Year 5 students will then have the opportunity to visittheir new friends in China in 2014.

The canteen is offering a special lunch on Wednesday 19th June. Select from the lunch options below by ticking the box next to the option you prefer.

Please attach this order form to a paper bag with a payment of $7.  Orders need to be returned to the canteen via classroom lunch baskets by Wednesday 12th June.

No orders will be accepted after this date. Children bringing late orders will have them returned and will need to bring lunch from home on this day.There will be no other lunch orders available on Wednesday 19th June.

Library NewsGreat new books from the Library - just a selection of the many new books we have.

Don’t forget that you can borrow before or after school, as well as at lunchtimes.

Saurus Street – entertaining new series for Grades 1-3, starring a range of dinosaurs getting in the way of the kids who live in Saurus Street.

Dirty Bertie series for a similar age-range. Dirty Bertie has some truly disgusting habits.

Today we have no plans by Jane Godwin and Anna Walker will ring a bell with all the busy families out there. During the week everyone is rushing about, but come Sunday,‘Today we have no plans’.

How to catch a monster has Lukas waiting every night for the very frightening monster,before he decides to catch it.

Queen Alice’s palaces is a great rhyming story by Australians Juliette MacIver and Lucia Masciullo.

Sylvester & Arnold are two big tough crocs. Their story is one of rivalry and acceptance,after they meet Betty the Bad!

And the hilarious Yobbos do yoga gives a gentle send-up of a new age dad and hiseventual acceptance of the new neighbours (the Yobbos).

And for older students: My life as an alphabet by Barry Jonsberg has 12 year old Candice Phee, hilariously honest and more than a little odd, trying to fix everyone’s problems.

In Henry Hoey Hobson, the 12 year old hero arrives at his sixth school, Our Lady ofPerpetual Succour, to discover he’s the only boy in Year 7.

Serendipity Smith, most famous writer in the world, goes missing. Her daughter, Tuesdayand her dog embark on a mission to find her. Finding Serendipity is a story of danger, adventure and friendship.

French CornerLes Virelangues

Les virelangues (tongue twisters) are words or phrases which are repeated as quickly as possible as a test of the speaker's ability to correctly pronounce a succession of similar sounds. For French students, les virelangues provide a way to practise phrases which are difficult even for native speakers.

Here are a few virelangues to try your hand at. If you get very good, maybe you could challenge your French teacher to un défi (a challenge)!

En France, le 16 juin, c’est la Fête des Pères (Father’s day).Ce jour-là, les papas sont à l’honneur! On donne un cadeau ou une carte pour dire qu’on les aime.

DVDs

A reminder to parents of Grade 1 and 2 students that the French DVD should have come home in your child’s communication folder last week.If you are yet to receive it, please let Madame Klockenbring know (klockenbring.elsa.e@edumail.vic.gov.au).

Reminder

Just a little reminder to all students of French at CHPS - a few minutes each week watching the DVD for the story you are doing, or accessing one of the many apps and websites mentioned in previous newsletters will help you to maintain your French. Who knows - you may even learn a few new things!

Portfolios

Students in Grades 3 and 4 will be bringing home their portfolios in the next few weeks. Please keep an eye out and be prepared for some impressive presentations at home.

Other Grades will be doing their presentations in Term 3.

It’s only May and we already have a small band of devoted walkers who have pounded the pavements of our neighbourhood collecting a cornucopia of items for our Silent Auction. Who makes CHPS’ Grand Plans possible?

As mentioned, this year, Jellis Craig is one of CHPS’ Fair major sponsors. Jellis Craig was established in 1991 and in 2004; Craig Shearn formed Jellis Craig Clifton Hill. Since 2004, the office has established the Jellis Craig Inner North Network with offices in Kensington and Northcote. Of all Jellis Craig Clifton Hill’s business, 60% comes through referral and reappointments.

Cavallini, one of our other major sponsors, has been referred to as a little piece of Europe on Queens Parade. Their artisan bakery, patisserie and espresso bar makes it almost irresistible just to simply walk by their café without dropping in and buying a little something.

Clifton Hill’s Baker’s Delight feels like the hub of activity just after school drop off. You’re bound to bump into someone you know from school on any day of the week. You know that their bread is consistently good and there is always plenty of samples for little fingers to try out.

The staff is always friendly and attentive at Clockwork Café.Their food is consistently great and is excellent value for money. Clockwork Café is also open for dinner during the week.

What are we saving for?

It’s official - the new Science Building is due to start construction later this year. This is an incredible initiative, as every single child in the school will benefit from this latest addition to CHPS. Like all other major school projects this has only been made possible from the hard work, dedication and generosity the school community provides to ensure our school’s fair is a success.

No Logistics? No Fair!

We want to continue ensuring our fair’s a success because our children can benefit from the rewards. As you all know, the only way we can achieve this is if the school community once again, works towards making the CHPS School Fair better than the last.

So far, we have had many parents volunteer to coordinate a stall and we thank each and every one of them.

We now have one critical position to fill-- the Logistics Coordinator. Winter is just around the corner and with the changing season, thoughts naturally turn to the need for a complete overhaul of your current wardrobe!

Why don’t you hang on to all the ‘good stuff’ you no longer need or the kids have outgrown for our Second Hand Stall? Amy and April will commence collections in Term 3.

Can you help us to spread the word?

We seek your assistance in increasing awareness of our Fair beyond the school community. New addresses are needed for billboards to advertise the Fair.

If you live near a main road or bike / walking path and are happy to have areal estate style board at your house forone month leading up to the Fair.

Extending an already impressive offering of food stalls at this year’s Fair, Tutti will run an Italian food stall showcasing their dishes to the school community and donating proceeds to our school. Why don’t you popinto Tutti to dine on lasagna, gnocchi or parmigianna or take it awayfor dinner that night!

Invitation for Preps to Under 12s to play soccer

Alphington Football Club will be having a soccer registration day for prep to Under 12 girls andboys to join the Development Squad for Term 3.
