guardians of memory

The memory is a fundamental concept for humanity: through it we improve and avoid repeating the mistakes that they made our ancestors. And the memory is the goal of the trip organized by the Lazio Region, which involved 141 high schools from across the region. The participants, 426 students and teachers, visited the Jewish quarter and the ghetto of Krakow during the first day, going over the history of the deportation of fifteen thousand Jews left in the city after the "resettlement" implemented by the Nazis. On the second day, the participants visited the Birkenau extermination and concentration camp of Auschwitz. Listen to the testimony of the four survivors who participated in the trip, her voice breaking, does understand more than I can ever make reading a history book. La memoria è un concetto fondamentale per l’umanità: grazie ad essa miglioriamo, evitando di ripetere gli errori che hanno commesso i nostri antenati. E proprio la memoria è l’obiettivo del viaggio organizzato dalla Regione Lazio che ha coinvolto 141 scuole superiori da tutta la Regione. I partecipanti, 426 tra studenti e professori, hanno visitato il quartiere ebraico ed il ghetto della città di Cracovia durante il primo giorno, ripercorrendo le vicende della deportazione dei quindicimila ebrei rimasti nella città dopo il “reinsediamento” attuato dai nazisti. Nel secondo giorno i partecipanti hanno visitato il centro di sterminio di Birkenau ed il campo di concentramento di Aushwitz. Ascoltare le testimonianze dei quattro sopravvissuti che hanno partecipato al viaggio, con la voce spezzata, fa comprendere più di quanto possa mai fare la lettura di un libro di storia. “Ogni volta che entro qua dentro è come se fosse la prima volta.” dice Piero Terracina, uno dei testimoni, che ha passato più di sette mesi nella “macchina della morte”. Passare sotto all’ironica scritta arbeit macht frei (il lavoro rende liberi), vedere le condizioni fisiche dei prigionieri attraverso le immagini pervenute, vedere gli enormi mucchi di scarpe, occhiali, oggetti d’igiene personale e capelli tagliati ai cadaveri da mandare alle industrie tessili (per non sprecare nulla!). Le immagini sono state scattate dal giovane fotografo Alessandro Palazio con una Canon PowerShot SX410 IS, fotocamera in stile bridge dotata di zoom 40x, per riprendere dettagli incredibili con risoluzione da 20 MP.
