Films
The Cannes Film Festival is usually held in May, at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, in the resort town of Cannes, France. The 63rd edition of the festival takes place from 12th to 23rd May 2010, with Tim Burton as the President of the Jury. The festival will be opened by the film Robin Hood by Ridley Scott.
The beginning By 1938, the Venice Film Festival had become a vehicle for Fascist and Nazi propaganda, with Mussolini's Italy and Hitler's Germany dictating the choices of films and sharing the prizes among themselves. In June 1939, the establishment of a film festival, to be held from September 1st to 20th, was announced in Paris. Many towns were proposed as candidates, but Cannes, an elegant beach city southeast of Nice on the Mediterranean coast, was chosen. In June 1939, Louis Lumière agreed to be the president of the first festival, but the German attack on Poland on 1st September 1939 ended the first edition of the festival before it started. The festival was revived in 1946 after World War II, in the old Casino of Cannes, financed by the French Foreign Affairs Ministry and the City of Cannes.

An unprecedented no-fly zone imposed across Europe following a huge volcanic eruption in Iceland, caused travel chaos for over a million air passengers. North-westerly winds continued to blow the eight mile high plume across the continent, raising fears that airlines could be grounded for days. One volcanologist said the ash could present intermittent problems to air traffic for six months if the eruption continued. The last time the volcano erupted in 1821, it spewed ash for two years. The pan-European shutdown affected an estimated 4,000 flights and is the most dramatic step of its kind in living memory. It caused the most international travel chaos since the 11 September attacks on America in 2001. Airports across France closed following the lead of safety authorities in Ireland, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland and Denmark. Planes travelling from America to Europe had to turn back over the Atlantic and a jet carrying British forces back from Afghanistan was grounded in Cyprus. The plume is projected to spread east and south over Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic and the Baltic states, as well as parts of Russia. "We certainly do not think we have over-reacted," a spokesman for the National Air Traffic Service said, prior to extending the total shutdown of all UK airports. "Safety is our main priority and volcanic ash is a serious threat to aircraft." In 1982, a British Airways jumbo jet became a giant glider when all four of its engines failed after flying through a volcanic plume over Indonesia. The ash cloud, almost invisible to the eye, began to spread across Europe in the early hours of Wednesday before stretching east to northern Norway, Sweden and Finland and south across Scotland and the UK, engulfing Britain totally by Thursday afternoon. The runways and aprons at Heathrow, normally the world's busiest airport, were becalmed. Manchester airport was almost empty with 75,000 passengers unable to travel. The eruption of the volcano which had been dormant for 187 years caused devastation in Iceland and civil protection teams had to evacuate around 700 residents when torrents of melt water flowed off the glacier through fields and farms. Day turned to night east of the eruption as thick grey ash fell, leading to fears among farmers for their grazing farm animals. The University From the official University Site. There are four academic divisions within Oxford University: Humanities, Mathematical, Physical & Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences. During the 20th and early 21st centuries, Oxford added to its humanistic core a major new research capacity in the natural and applied sciences, including medicine. In so doing, it has enhanced and strengthened its traditional role as an international focus for learning and a forum for intellectual debate. There is no clear date of foundation, but teaching existed at Oxford in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. By 1201, the University was headed by a magister scolarum Oxonie, on whom the title of Chancellor was conferred in 1214, and in 1231 the masters were recognized as a universitas or corporation. In the 13th century, rioting between town and gown hastened the establishment of primitive halls of residence. These were succeeded by the first of Oxford's colleges: Balliol and Merton Colleges, which were established between 1249 and 1264, are the oldest. In 1355, Edward III paid tribute to the University for its invaluable contribution to learning, but in 1530, Henry VIII forced the University to accept his divorce from Catherine of Aragon, and during the Reformation in the 16th century, the Anglican churchmen Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley were tried for heresy and burnt at the stake in Oxford. The University was Royalist in the Civil War, and Charles I held a counter-Parliament in Convocation House, and in the late 17th century, the Oxford philosopher John Locke, suspected of treason, was forced to flee the country. The 18th century, when Oxford was said to have forsaken port for politics, was also an era of scientific discovery and religious revival. Edmund Halley, Professor of Geometry, predicted the return of the comet that bears his name; John and Charles Wesley's prayer meetings laid the foundations of the Methodist Society. In 1860 the new University Museum was the scene of a famous debate between Thomas Huxley, champion of evolution, and Bishop Wilberforce. From 1878, academic halls were established for women and they were admitted to full membership of the University in 1920. Five all-male colleges first admitted women in 1974 and, since then, all colleges have changed their statutes to admit both women and men.

The chronicle of decisions by doctors caring for patients stranded by the flood, written by Sheri Fink of ProPublica in collaboration with The New York Times Magazine, marked the first time an online service won a top journalism award given annually by the Pulitzer Prize Board at Columbia University. The Times magazine published the Hurricane Katrina piece. "This is something we're going to see more of in the years ahead as there's more and more collaboration of news entities when it comes to enterprise journalism," Sig Gissler, administrator of the prizes, said in announcing the winners. In another online first, www.sfgate.com, the website of the San Francisco Chronicle, won for Editorial Cartooning. The award for the animated cartoons by Mark Fiore marked the first time an Internet-based entry won in that category. Reporter Michael Moss and New York Times staff won in the Explanatory Reporting category for writing about contaminated hamburger and food safety issues. Reporter Matt Richtel and Times staff won the national reporting award for writing about the hazards of using cell phones and computers while driving. "The watchdog function of journalism is heavily underscored," Gissler said. "Watchdog journalism is still a vibrant force.” "It's been a tough time for newspapers the last few years," he added. "But amid the gloomy talk, the winners and the finalists are encouraging examples of the high quality of journalism across the nation. ” The Washington Post won four prizes. “Shenker e Full Immersion a Londra: un ottimo abbinamento” Abbiamo trovato chi ci descrive la Full Immersion a Londra con l‟entusiasmo di chi scorge il bello in ogni cosa che fa. Sara Rapa è una dottoranda in Filosofia Politica non vedente, le abbiamo fornito il corso in formato elettronico, ed ecco fatto: studentessa di inglese presso la sede di Verona (25 livelli in meno di due anni) e una Full Immersion a Londra in compagnia di un‟amica, fondamentale per la fluenza verbale. In più ha vissuto sulla propria pelle ogni singola emozione infusa dalla capitale britannica, innamorandosene (testuali parole!). Basta leggere le sue risposte per capire come ogni momento della sua esperienza all‟estero sia stato registrato e impresso a fondo.

Quando hai scelto di iniziare il tuo percorso di studi con il Metodo Shenker? Due anni fa, partendo da un livello intermedio maturato negli anni con lo studio dell‟inglese a scuola, ho deciso di migliorare la mia conoscenza linguistica frequentando prima un corso intensivo presso la sede di Verona, poi diluendo lo studio e svolgendo le relative lezioni una volta a settimana. Fondamentale è stata la vostra disponibilità nel fornirmi i file elettronici del corso! Un corso intensivo prima, individuale con frequenza settimanale poi, che ti ha portato in meno di un paio d’anni a conseguire un importante risultato… Direi proprio di sì! Sono davvero molto entusiasta dei progressi fatti… Non me lo sarei mai aspettata! In poco tempo ho raggiunto con costanza e impegno il livello 50 che a tutti gli effetti significa padronanza e autonomia linguistica. Sono contenta! A quel punto l’unico scoglio da superare era rappresentato dalla pratica, dall’esprimersi in maniera fluente con scioltezza e sicurezza. Per questo hai pensato di partire per Londra? Esatto! Una settimana intensa, formativa a 360°. La Full Immersion con Shenker ti offre una completezza di formazione pratica. Sono stata nella capitale Britannica nella prima settimana di marzo. Tante le attività svolte, variegate e interessanti: dalla lettura del quotidiano al dialogo costante con simulazioni pratiche, fino alle telefonate in cui mettere alla prova il proprio speaking anche in situazioni estreme. In un contesto in cui è impossibile non comunicare in lingua inglese… Un‟esperienza indubbiamente molto utile e gradevole a livello pratico di vita normale. Negli anni mi sono abituata a studiare l‟inglese in maniera teorica, in cui la parte pratica, per ovvi motivi, resta sempre un punto dolente. Andare a Londra è stato l‟unico modo per superare ogni tipo di blocco e inibizione, valorizzare lo speaking e alimentare la comprensione. Puoi spiegare a chi ci legge come si è svolta in particolare la tua Full Immersion? (E‟ possibile prenotare la Full Immersion a Londra a seconda delle esigenze di ciascun fruitore, dal Business al General English, dall‟individuale al percorso di classe) Siamo andate a Londra, io ed una mia amica. Abbiamo trovato Jane, insegnante preparata e molto disponibile. Una docente professionale sempre attenta e carina. Con lei, dopo un approccio formale, basato sul conoscersi e presentarsi rigorosamente in lingua inglese, abbiamo rivisto lacune grammaticali e ripreso idiomi e modi di dire, attraverso un clima disteso, una costante conversazione dialogica. Quale momento ti ha colpito più di ogni altro in questa esperienza? Assistere ai Musical! Spettacolari! Sono stata letteralmente rapita! In primo luogo perché riuscivo a comprendere i dialoghi e poi per le musiche e il ritmo, una carica di energia…

Sbilanciati pure: i titoli? Ben 3 musical in una settimana: „Sister Act‟, „Grease‟ e „Mamma mia‟: i miei preferiti, d‟altronde! Cosa ti hanno lasciato questi Musical? Per „Sister Act‟ e „Mamma mia‟ nessun problema, mi hanno dato molte soddisfazioni. „Grease‟ è stato un po‟ più difficile, essendo rappresentato da una compagnia americana, credevo di non riuscire a comprenderlo. Invece sono riuscita a capire l‟80% dei dialoghi! Buono no? Ma certo! Immagino grazie al tuo inglese studiato a Verona con il Metodo e alimentato dalla Full Immersion? Direi proprio di sì, da Verona a Londra! La Full Immersion insiste molto sull‟esprimersi costantemente, parlando, interagendo in inglese; non puoi farne a meno. In cosa ti senti migliorata una volta tornata a casa? Nell‟ascolto: si „vive‟ a Londra. E poi nella comprensione. In questo la fonetica studiata con il Metodo Shenker a Verona è stata vitale. Me ne sono accorta soprattutto durante le simulazioni telefoniche. Proprio lì le difficoltà aumentano, la voce è mediata. Lo speaking poi è molto più sciolto, ti senti padrona della lingua. La tua giornata è stata scandita anche da momenti culturali molto interessanti, vero? Ti riferisci sicuramente alle letture di testi poetici e di letteratura classica con terminologie arcaiche e ricercate. Sono tornate molto utili, mi hanno permesso di esercitarmi su terreni diversi.

Hai fatto riferimento al tuo speaking: ti ricordi quali situazioni esterne ti hanno dato l’opportunità di esprimerti completamente? Lo speaking viene „messo alla prova‟ nelle situazioni quotidiane: ad esempio acquistando i tickets per la Metro, ordinare al ristorante, chiedere informazioni, dialogare e interagire continuamente. Shenker + Full Immersion? Un ottimo abbinamento. Continuità ma anche un‟esperienza all‟estero che mi ha permesso di avere una maggiore disinvoltura con la lingua, parlare correttamente in maniera dialogica senza doverci pensare o articolare troppo la frase in testa restando ancorata alla struttura grammaticale. A chi consiglieresti l’esperienza di Full Immersion con Shenker? L‟importante è calibrarlo sulle singole esigenze e sulle proprie lacune linguistiche. Può essere adatto a tutti sia per età che per obiettivo, senza alcun limite. E‟ per questo un corso versatile e molto comunicativo. Dai, descrivi la Full Immersion Shenker: E‟ un‟esperienza accattivante che ti arricchisce. Fare il corso all‟estero aumenta le tue potenzialità, completa il tuo speaking e la conoscenza linguistica a 360°.

L‟idea di inventare un nuovo gioco era partita da Luther Halsey Gulick Jr, Responsabile del dipartimento di educazione fisica della School of Christian Workers, il quale cercava uno sport, alternativo alla semplice ginnastica, per mantenere in allenamento i giocatori di baseball e football nei lunghi e freddi mesi invernali, quindi un gioco che potesse essere praticato al coperto. Naismith, che era un insegnante dell‟YMCA, la Young Men's Christian Association, si basò su due concetti: un pallone che potesse essere lanciato con le mani, e un obiettivo, il canestro. Da cui il nome, basket (cesto, canestro) e ball (palla): basketball. Questo nuovo sport ebbe immediatamente un grande successo. Si diffuse rapidamente in tutto il mondo e nel 1908 il Madison Square Garden di New York, ospita il primo torneo di basket.

Il basketball entrò ufficialmente nei giochi olimpici nel 1936. Fu lo stesso Naismith ad assegnare la medaglia d‟oro alla squadra vincente: gli Stati Uniti. E nel 1946 nacque la famosa lega americana, la National Basketball Association (NBA).

Il gioco
Il basket è uno sport di squadra il cui scopo è segnare punti facendo passare la palla attraverso il canestro avversario. Il campo da gioco è di norma al coperto (anche se negli Stati Uniti è diffusa la pratica all‟aperto: street basket), ha forma rettangolare (28mx15m), e dovrebbe essere pavimentato in legno. Sul campo sono disegnate delle aree che hanno funzioni particolari, ad es. a centro campo è disegnato un cerchio per la contesa della palla (palla a due), mentre in ciascuna metà campo sono indicate le aree per effettuare tiri speciali. I canestri sono a un‟altezza di 3,05 metri dal suolo e dietro hanno un tabellone. La palla, sferica, è fatta di un materiale che facilita la presa anche con le mani sudate! Le squadre in campo sono composte da 5 giocatori ciascuna, e possono essere sostituiti dalle riserve in panchina senza alcuna limitazione. Solo l‟espulsione e particolari falli impediscono a un giocatore di tornare in campo. Le partite durano 40 minuti suddivisi in 4 tempi, con l‟intervallo principale tra il 3° e 4° tempo. L‟NBA, che in generale ha regole un po‟ diverse da quelle internazionali, allo scopo di rendere il gioco più spettacolare e avvincente, ha partite di 48 minuti.

Come abbiamo già detto, i punti si segnano facendo passare la palla nel canestro, però il punteggio assegnato dipende dal punto in cui si trova il giocatore al momento del lancio, e dal tipo di tiro effettuato: Tiro libero: 1 punto Tiro dall'interno dell'area dei 3 punti: 2 punti Tiro dall'esterno dell'area dei 3 punti: 3 punti Non è ammesso che le partite finiscano in parità (salvo che in caso di competizioni che prevedono andata e ritorno, per le quali vale la differenza canestri), quindi se alla fine del 4° tempo non si ha un vincitore si procede con tempi supplementari di 5 minuti fino a quando una delle due squadre non risulta in vantaggio allo scadere dei 5 minuti. Esistono poi delle regole precise per come muoversi in campo e su come usare la palla. I principali movimenti vengono chiamati “fondamentali” e sono palleggio, passaggio, tiro e movimenti difensivi. Palleggio: per portare in avanti la palla nel campo è necessario palleggiare sin dal primo passo che si compie con la palla in mano. Il palleggio si effettua con una sola mano. Passaggio: ovvero passaggio di palla da un giocatore all‟altro. Tiro: è il passaggio della palla direttamente a canestro.

Altri movimenti sono il Terzo Tempo, la Schiacciata, l‟Alley-oop, il Rimbalzo, il Tap-in e il Tap-out, la Stoppata, il Blocco, il Pick & Roll, ecc ecc. Gli arbitri verificano la regolarità del gioco e segnalano falli o infrazioni. Ogni 4 falli commessi in fase difensiva si trasformano in un bonus di due tiri a favore della squadra avversaria.
I principali tornei
In Italia il campionato di serie A è considerato il secondo campionato più competitivo d'Europa, dopo la Liga ACB spagnola. Per quanto riguarda gli Stati Uniti, il campionato principale è quello della NBA al quale partecipano squadre come i Boston Celtics, i Chicago Bulls (la squadra di Michael Jordan), i Los Angeles Lakers (la squadra di Magic Johnson), i San Antonio Spurs (vincitori del campionato 2007). Anche le olimpiadi sono molto importanti e sono state occasioni di scontri spettacolari, in particolare durante gli anni della Guerra Fredda le partite tra Stati Uniti e Russia assumevano un rilevanza politica oltre che sportiva. Sono rimaste nella storia del basket americano le olimpiadi di Barcellona del 1992, quando si concesse anche agli atleti professionisti di prendere parte ai giochi olimpici. Gli Stati Uniti poterono così schierare i campioni dell‟NBA e misero in campo una rosa che comprendeva alcuni dei migliori giocatori mai esistiti. La squadra, passata alla storia come il mitico Dream Team, e che ovviamente si aggiudicò la medaglia olimpica comprendeva: Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Scottie Pippen, David Robinson, Chris Mullin, Karl Malone, John Stockton, Clyde Drexler e Patrick Ewing, Christian Laettner.
