GIMME TRES STEPS The $100,000 question is: which Tres Borrachos(Ecton Park) is going to show up for today=s GII SanPasqual S. at Santa Anita. Will it be the one that camefrom behind to win the GII San Diego H. and to grabthird in the GI Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile? Or will he make

the running as he did enroute to a runner-upeffort in the GIII NativeDiver H. at HollywoodPark Dec. 3. AJoeldecided to put him on thelead, and I didn=t haveany trouble with that,@trainer Marty Jones toldDaily Racing Form, referring to the racestrategy last time. AWe=ll

look at the competition and leave it up to Joel,@ headded. Tweebster (Tapit) is still eligible for a third-levelallowance, but more than keeps paying his way at thislevel. After winning three of his eight starts at three, hefailed to find the winner=s circle in five tries last term, but was second in the GII San Fernando S. and the GII Strub S. and third in the Native Diver. AHe=s anhonest little horse, but he can=t get by seconditis,@trainer Bob Baffert admitted.

Sham S. cont.

No Walkover for the Chalk... The 2012 running of the Sham marks the first timethe race will be contested this early in the season andthe first time at a mile. In years past, it has been runduring the month of February at the distance of ninefurlongs, but this switch has been well received by thelikes of Baffert. ARunning the Sham at a mile and aneighth this time of year was too early,@ he commented.ABut the Sham at one mile now is a good spot forhorses whose potential for longer distances you=re notcertain of.@ J “TDN Rising Star” J Hierro (HardSpun) will do his best to strip Secret Circle of hisunblemished career mark. A troubled fifth to Alpha (seeopposite column) in his Saratoga debut Sept. 3, heimproved to be runner-up next time out at Belmont ParkOct. 1, but won his maiden Aas the rider pleased@ perthe DRF marginal comment, skipping away to score by 5 1/4 lengths at Churchill going seven furlongs Nov. 9.Steve Asmussen is shooting for a second consecutivewin in the Sham, having sent out Tapizar (Tapit) in2011. Longview Drive (Pulpit), a full brother to GISWPyro, won a pair of stakes on the California fairs circuitat Santa Rosa and Fresno last season, and gave a goodaccount of himself on a grander stage when third in theGIII Delta Jackpot S. Nov. 19. He=ll add blinkers for hisSanta Anita debut. AWe think he worked better inblinkers,@ Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said.ASo that=s why we put them on. We=re not putting onsemis, we=re just putting some little French cups onhim.@

IL VILLANO GETS FIRST ROUTE TEST Chuck Russo=s Il Villano will look to increase his winstreak to four as he makes his two-turn debut intoday=s Count Fleet S. at the Big A. The grey broke hismaiden by 11 lengths at Parx Oct. 4 before annexingthe Lord Henribee S. on the main track here Nov. 6.The grey is coming off a five-length tally in the Dec. 6Southhampton S. back in Bensalem in his most recenteffort. Il Villano may have to dial back his ample earlyfoot in order to comfortably see out the trip consideringfellow speedster How Do I Win is drawn directly to hisoutside. Alpha, a debut winner at Saratoga Sept. 6 anda distant second in the GI Champagne S. behind UnionRags (Dixie Union) at Belmont Oct. 8, looms a heavyodds-on favorite on the morning line. He was never incontention after acting up at the gate before the Nov. 5GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile S., checking in adisappointing 11th, but the Godolphin colorbearerenters this off a bullet four-furlong drill at Belmont Jan. 2 and gets his first dose of raceday Lasix. AWehave several 3-year-olds we think highly of, includingAlpha and J “TDN Rising Star” J Consortium(Bernardini) and some others who haven=t started yet,and we=re trying to split them up,@ explained trainerKiaran McLaughlin of the decision to keep Alpha in NewYork rather than Florida. AWe have had great success inNew York with our runners during the winter. At theBreeders= Cup, he lost it in the gate, and we=re hopinghe will step up off that effort. He=s a nice horse.@ Field p5

Soldat, hero of last year=s GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain ofYouth S. at Gulfstream Park (video), has begun gearingup for his 4-year-old campaign. The dark bay returnedto the Palm Meadows worktab with a pair of three-furlong breezes, including a :36 4/5 move Dec. 31. Hopefully, you keep seeing his name on theworktab. We haven=t picked out a spot yet [for hisreturn]. He=s just had two easy works.@ The dark bay was freshened following a disappointingfifth-place finish as the 3-2 favorite in the GI FloridaDerby Apr. 3 and an 11th-place finish in the GIKentucky Derby May 7. He was targeting the grassyGII Virginia Derby in July before McLaughlin decided totap on the brakes. AIt was just his campaign,@ McLaughlin said of hisreasoning for placing Soldat on holiday. AWe decided togive him a little break--his feet were the only thing thatwere bugging him at that time, but he had a lot ofraces too. It was a combination of both things. He=sbeen great though--no surgery and he=s doing well. Itjust took him a little bit longer than we thought to gethim back on the worktab.@ Soldat, a $180,000 KEESEP yearling purchase, showed an affinity for grass during his 2-year-oldseason, posting an authoritative win in Saratoga=s GIII With Anticipation S. Equineline Sales Catalog offers everything you couldpossibly want for viewing and editing sales catalogsfrom Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse and Standardbredauctions around the world. The features are endlessand right on the money--this app was clearly designedby someone who knows what auction buyers, sellersand spectators want and need inan interactive catalog. Onceyou've downloaded a catalog ofyour choice from the extensive listof offerings, you can view eachpage as you normally would, butwith a streamlined ease that aregular hard copy can't match. What further sets the app apartfrom a standard catalog are theways in which it allows one tomark, edit and categorize pages. The user can add free-hand notes, highlights, underlines or stickynotes. It's also possible to add letter ratings or rate anoffering by conformation or veterinary information.Various indexes are available as well as a searchfunction. You can add horses to short lists too, turningeach list into its own mini catalog. The app gives youthe ability to email annotated pages, and you can evenview breeze videos for 2-year-old sales. The only minorissue I had with this app has to do with itswriting/highlighting functions. I found it a bit hard toaccurately mark exactly where I wanted on apage--using a stylus might correct this.

Equibase Today's Racing is one of several appsfeatured here that is made for the iPhone, but that runson the iPad. Racing Post's app, also intended for the iPhone, features European cards and results with significantdetail. The race cards include past performanceinformation that can be customized, which is a niceadded bonus. Cards are available for the upcoming raceday through whatever day is available--usually about a

week or so. Results go backabout six days and include a fairamount of information. Theapp's news section lists topstories in chronological orderwith the most recent news at thetop. There's also a video featuresection that isn't updated asoften. European users can usethe app to access and betthrough their William Hillaccount, and there's a link forstreaming William Hill radio. Thisis a useful app for accessing

European racing information regardless of your location, but only European users will have the luxury of takingfull advantage of its functionality.

Daily Racing Form TicketMaker helps you structureexotic wagers using the breakthrough methods outlinedin Steve Crist's "Exotic Betting." This is another appintended for the iPhone, so it's not the prettiest thing to

look at, but it's a very usefultool that gets the job done. It'seasy to sort runners into the A,B, C, and X categories and toadjust parameters, and the"callout" function would beuseful when placing a bet witha teller at the track. You canalso save tickets or email themto yourself or others. TheTicketMaker app features a linkto the DRF website, but itwould be better to simplyaccess the site on Safari--thein-app browser does not

address issues of incompatibility between iOS andflash-driven content, so the only difference is a smallerscreen. Either way, no Formulator without using somesort of third-party app--I've tried it using the GoToMyPCapp and it works well enough.

Hollywood Park's iGoRacing app is only really usefulwhen Hollywood is running, but it is a very aestheticallypleasing app that takes full advantage of the iPad's high

resolution screen.Entries, results andchanges are availableduring the meet, andworkouts are updatedeach day for bothHollywood and SantaAnita. There are alsosome handicappingresources which are abit more geared tothe novice, including

a bet calculator for determining the cost of a givenwager. One of the app's more appealing functions islive streaming video, which is something hard to comeby due to the flash issue on iOS. With a load ofinformation presented in an excellent format, this is amust-have app for the Hollywood Park enthusiast.

The Kentucky Derby and Breeders' Cup apps haven't,of course, been updated yet for 2012, but both appearlike they'll be very useful when the time comes. Don'tforget to check them out during the spring and fallrespectively.

It's also worth noting that while there is no TDN app,all features on the TDN website are fully functional withSafari. The newsletter itself looks great on the iPadeither in Safari or in iBooks, and video replays arecompatible with iOS.

Louise Courtelis, who owns the Georgetown,Kentucky-based Town and Country Farms with herdaughter Kiki, turns 80 years of age in just under twoweeks, and received an early birthday present with TheLast Meow=s debut victory Friday at Gulfstream Park. AShe ran a very powerful race, and we are all justvery proud,@ commented Sonny Werneth, the presidentand CEO of Town and Country who watched the racewith a group of farm staffand employees from theiroffices. Town and CountryFarms was founded byCourtelis and her latehusband Alec in Micanopy,Florida, and stood leadingArabian stallion Wiking, whose progeny amassedearnings in excess of $6 million and won 17 DarleyAwards for Arabian excellence. The operation wasrecognized on five separate occasions as the ArabianBreeders of the Year and was named Arabian Owner ofthe Year in 1997. One of the leading clients of the farmin its days as an Arabian operation was none other thanSheikh Mohammed, for whom Town and Countryhoused over 300 horses over the years, in theestimation of Werneth. Upon the untimely demise of Wiking in the early2000s, Courtelis, who ran the farm alone following thedeath of her husband in 1996, decided to make thetransition to Thoroughbreds, and ultimately relocated toCentral Kentucky.

AWe felt that if we were going to make money in theThoroughbred business, we=d have to move toKentucky, and we=ve been here for a little over threeyears now,@ Werneth commented. It didn=t take long for Town and Country to make asplash, as they went to work on day one of the 2008Keeneland November sale. On offer that afternoon wasthe talented Richwoman (Successful Appeal), winner ofthe GIII Debutante S. in 2006, who was carrying one ofthe final foals by the legendary Storm Cat. Town andCountry was able to privately secure the filly, then four, after she was led out of the ring unsold on a bid of$725,000. AShe was a maiden mare and we were looking for agood racemare and she was that,@ Werneth recollected.AWe just liked her, and knowing that she was going tohave one of the last Storm Cat babies was ofsignificant interest to us.@ Richwoman foaled the filly that would come to beknown as The Last Meow Mar. 5, 2009, but theysuspected nearly from the start that the filly may not becommercially viable. That proved to be the case whenbidding stalled on her at $220,000 at Fasig-TiptonSaratoga in the summer of 2010. Werneth believes thatwas a blessing in disguise. ARichwoman had the filly and she was a little low inthe back, so we didn=t get to sell her in the sale, butlater on we were pleased that we didn=t because afterwe broke her, she showed a lot of potential,@ he stated. After being broken by Eric Reed at Pegasus Stud, TheLast Meow was put into serious training at Keenelandin early 2011, and recorded several promising workoutsover the Polytrack with an eye on an opening-daymaiden in Lexington. As entry day neared, the phonerang. On the other end of the phone was one of thecountry=s top conditioners. Cont. p4

AWe had talked to Todd [Pletcher] the year before andhe said he=d love to have her,@ Werneth explained.AIronically, he called the same week that we weregetting ready to enter at Keeneland, so we decided tosend her on to Todd. After Todd got her, he decidedshe needed a little more maturity. We knew that shehad a lot of speed, but we were a little afraid that shewould turn out like her mother, so we wanted to giveher a little more time to mature, and hopefully she=dtake to the racetrack and do well.@ The Last Meow shipped to Pletcher=s Palm Meadowsbase in November, earning the bullet for a half-milebreeze in :47.19 (1/18) Dec. 7. She capped herworktab with a solid five-furlong move in 1:01.33,setting her up for Friday=s debut. Despite the speed she showed yesterday, Werneth, who will turn 67 Jan. 18--the day before his boss=sbirthday--sees no reason she won=t be able to stretchout in distance. AWe certainly think so,@ he said when asked if she=llgo on. AIt showed in her early works that she had a lotof speed, but I just hung up with Todd, and he said shegalloped out really well. She=s been doing that in herrecent works, so we hope so. She=s a longer-bodied fillythan her mother, only thing is that she=s a swayback. Some people hold that against horses, but we had onea few years back and she was a great racemare. If theyhave the heart and the ability, the swayback doesn=tmatter--they can still run.@ Town and Country=s broodmare band currentlynumbers 28, which optimally will be pared down toabout 20, Werneth stated. The operation added anotherhigh-class performer to their collection last November, going to an even $1-million to acquire GISW C. S. Silk(Medaglia d=Oro). In terms of the future for The Last Meow, there willbe no back-seat driving, according to Werneth. AWhen you=ve got someone like Todd, you have todepend on them,@ he offered. AWe=ll pretty much leaveit up to him. If there=s a spot that we don=t like, we=llcertainly share our opinion, but it=s his call.@ Werneth has held any number of odd jobs throughouthis life, from fast-food restaurant owner to shipyardworker, from horse trainer to housebuilder. But, as hesays, Athe Lord always brought me back to thesehorses.@ Following yesterday=s promising score, he ishappiest not for himself, but for Louise Courtelis, withwhom he has worked for 35 years. AI=m so proud for my boss,@ he stated. AShe=s awonderful lady, and we=re hoping to have a big runnerfor her before her time comes.@ The Last Meow just may be the one.--Alan Carasso
