DC Report

February 2013Return to homepage

It seems such a long time since I’ve done a report for the newsletter!

Camp has probably been the highlight since our last newsletter, held in early January at the Westbury Showground. 36 Riders attended over the duration of the week, with many young riders attending for the first time. I’d like to thank our Chief Coach, Kylee Pearn for putting together such a wonderful program for our riders for the week. Most of you would be unaware of the work that goes into putting the camp program together…. 36 riders = 8 groups x 4 lessons per day x 3 days = 96 lessons for the week; plus evening activities….. not a small task, so from everyone who attended –a very big thank you Kylee for your efforts.

There were of course a number of highlights from the week: a number of riders took D; D* and C tests with everyone passing with flying colours. Congratulations to Sarah Lockett; Amelia Youngman; Ellie Gillow and Madeleine Pearn who gained their C Test; Melissa Chugg; Evie Millar; BridieGoodluck; Jade Ruffo; Bethany Hirst; Chloe McFarlane; Oscara Dowling and Emily Kilby who gained their D* and Maya Scott who was awarded her D test.

The musical ride was once again a wonderful display at our presentation evening on the Thursday night. As I said on the night, I would love to be able to capture the chaos of the first practice on the Tuesday morning compared to the display presented on the Thursday evening. It’s true testament to the capabilities of Jo McFarlane who works with the riders over the three days to produce such a polished performance…… this year, to the very popular “Gangman Style” song!

The other highlight for the week was the presentation of the camp trophies….. Congratulations to all riders who were awarded trophies and to Liffey Ride who took out the Ride Trophy, wresting it from Esk who have taken it home for the past 10 years!

The following riders were awarded trophies:Senior Pony Clubber of the year – Jess PykeJunior Pony Clubber of the year – Madeleine PearnMost Improved under 10 yrs – Oscara DowlingJunior Most Improved – Chelsea BakerSenior Most Improved – Melissa ChuggEncouragement Award – Amelia YoungmanMost Helpful Junior – Ellie GillowMost Helpful Senior – Michaela van RooyeMost Helpful Parent – John Chalmers (and Alice Chalmers)Barbara Bennett Ride Shield – Liffey

ODE Season in Full SwingIt’s great to see so many TPRC riders out and about at the various ODE’s happening throughout the State. Riders are travelling far and wide to give their horses a run and gain those sought after Trials qualifications. Well done to all those riders, from Grade 1 down through the grades to our grade 4 riders having their first season out.

DC Report cont...

At the rally this coming Sunday Barry & Kylie Baker will be coming along and bringing with them some exercise pads to work with groups on some vaulting exercises. This was a huge hit at Camp on the Wednesday night and should be a fun lesson for our riders! Nick Archer will also be coming to take those interested in doing games this year. I know a number of riders won’t be at this rally due to the Lilydale ODE and other reasons – this does not mean you can’t be part of the games team. It is just a chance for Nick to come along and work with those that are interested. We will organise selections process further down the track. Kylee, Chief Coach

From the Chief Coach

Mimi and Freya Hansford come to camp this year and had a fabulous time and experience. They have been riding for about 6 years and just adore horses. They have spent most of their time riding with Woodend Pony Club which is approximately 1hours drive north of Melbourne. However for the past 12 months they have been living in Broome and therefore have been riding with Broome and District Pony Club. The girls said that TPRC is similar in size to Woodend, however their camp is quite different. Woodend Pony Club Camp is a shared camp with other clubs and families self cater for the riders.

The girls had loads of fun and enjoyed being part of TPRC for the week. They also were extremely grateful to Theresa Elias for allowing them to ride Goldie and Mondo and of course the kindness and friendship shown to them during their stay. A big thank you to TPRC.

Handy Hints - Bush fire season

With the bush fire season in full swing, these fire safety tips may be of interest:

Handy Hint 1: Identify Your Horses if a Bush Fire is Approaching. In the face of a bush fire, it is a good idea to attach an identity tag to your horses’ headstall or tie it in his mane. A standard plastic key tag is cheap. Write his name and your phone number (mobile) and address on the reverse side, with a black waterproof pen. Take a photo with a digital camera so that if he escapes or is taken to a holding area, you can advertise and post photos around on social media sites as a ‘lost horse’ in your district. An even better option is to microchip your horse, this is a quick and reliable way to make sure your horse can be identified in any situation.

Handy Hint 2: Ensure That You Can Arrange Room on a Horse FloatMany of the horses which were burnt in fires could not be evacuated because they were unable to be transported off the property in the period before the fire. Arrange with friends to share a float(s) and pre-arrange a collection or pick up point with a safe evacuation route to a park or a bush fire safe holding area. Relocate mares and foals and aged horses as early as possible from the predicted high fire danger area. Fires can spread very quickly and you may not have time once a fire is raging near your property and the air is full of falling embers and burning debris. Horses can become frightened by the smell of fires and smoke in the air and it may be difficult and unsafe to attempt to move them without the risk of injury to them or you as a handler.

Handy Hint 3: Organise Food and Water in the Safe Holding AreaIt is important to ensure that your horses have food and water ready at the holding area. Pre- arrange for enough hay for 3-5 days and drums of water to be stored at the holding area or a nearby property. Transport feed bins, water tubs, rugs and extra head stalls and lead ropes to the holding area. Be aware of snakes sheltering in the holding area as they attempt to escape the fire. Other animals may find refuge in the cleared area too and it may be necessary to provide them with water and food.

Handy Hint 4: Carry a Torch and Mobile PhoneIt is mandatory to have a torch if the smoke is thick or if the fire is burning at night. Ensure that you have a torch with new batteries or fully charged cells, ready to go during the evacuation. Carry a fully charged mobile phone with you so that you can contact Fire Authorities, family or friends during the evacuation. Add the contact numbers for the local Fire Controller into the phone. If you have to leave horse(s) behind, try to ensure the safest possible area – e.g. a paddock with a dam of water and a clear spacearound it with the gates open as a possible escape route if the horse(s) need to get away from the fire or smoke.

Protect Your Horses during Evacuation1. Use only leather headstalls (plastic/nylon ones can melt) and long cotton lead ropes – wet the ropes.2. Remove plastic fly shields – fit string veils and wet them before moving the horses near the fire.3. Cover your horse to protect him against skin and hair burn by hot air with a cotton or canvas rug – wet it thoroughly to prevent the horse’s body from being burned – do not use a synthetic rug.4. Wrap the hooves in strips of old towels or cotton bandages – saturate the towelling/bandages and take a full watering can of water to regularly wet the hooves when walking on hot ground. Wet the horse’s mane, tail and legs before walking out. Courtesy John Konke

PC organizes many events throughout the year on a State, Zone and Club level and at each official event a person called a Technical Delegate (TD) is appointed to oversee the conduct of the event. A Technical Delegate attains accreditation by many years of attending training courses and working with qualified TDs. The roles of a TD at an event are as follows:

• to ensure Events are conducted in accordance with the Rules; • to act as technical delegate; • to act in the place of the Ground Jury in the case of a CNC where there is no formal Ground Jury. • to provide appropriate help and guidance; • to inspect and approve the cross-country and jumping courses before they are shown to the riders; • to authorise appropriate alterations being made if, in his opinion, these courses are not in all respects within the limits laid down in the Rules or are unsuitable for the classes of horses expected to take part; • to submit a report to the relevant office within 21 days of the event;

He may not perform any other role at an Official Event.

The role of a TD at an event is very important and official events such as Trials, State Showjumping etc cannot be conducted unless a TD is present and has approved the courses and general rules of the event. The role of the TD also requires that person to handle queries from riders, officials, XC stewards and a particularly busy time is usually when scores are posted at the conclusion of an event and riders require clarification of results.

Riders, parents and friends need to be aware that you can only direct a query to the TD through your Club DC (or person nominated by your Club to stand in for the DC), under no circumstances do you approach the TD directly unless an urgent safety issue i.e. you may notice something unsafe on a XC fence). Sometimes it is necessary for the TD to speak to individual riders concerning rule infringements, behaviour or perhaps horse welfare, in this case the event organiser in conjunction with the TD will request the rider and their Club DC(and if no DC available accompanied by a parent/guardian) to meet with the TD who will explain to the rider the nature of the rule infringement. If required to meet with the TD please remember to be respectful and listen to the advice that they will give to assist you with your competition experience.

Our TD’s are highly valued, Volunteer PC officials who give of their time freely to assist our riders, so parents and riders please be mindful that the TD has many duties to fulfil at an event and we can make their task easier by being respectful and directing our queries in the appropriate manner through your DC.

Remember, if you can’t do canteen it is up to you to find a replacement.

ReminderJust a little reminder to members regarding the end of the pony club day. Each rally a committee member is nominated to stay

behind and close all the gates. Sometimes families are a little slow to get going, which means the person who is shutting the gate

has to wait. If you look like being the last few, please be mindful of this person and don’t be

too much longer.

Uniform

Don’t forget our uniform requirements. All riders must in the first instance, purchase

the full pony club uniform ie gold jumper, white shirt and gold tie. Even our youngest riders need to have this uniform as they need it

when they sit their D test at age 7 and for club presentation at camp.

The rugby jumper and active riding top are optional extras only.

Wet Weather PolicyRallies will NOT be cancelled in the morning

unless there is an electrical storm.Parents should not ring to find out if the

rally will go ahead, but if you decide you are not going to attend due to the wet weather,

please let Kylee know ASAP. The rally may be cancelled during the day if necessary.

In the case of an electrical storm, the DC and CC will confer. If the rally is cancelled

everyone will be notified by text by 9am which means the rally start time may need to be

delayed.

REMINDER

A reminder that there is to be NO smoking or dogs on the Pony Club grounds at ALL times. We want to be setting a good example for our riders, so if you must light up, please leave the grounds.

Also pick up any rubbish and either place it in a bin or take it with you.
