As you may already know, the Rotary theme for 2019-2020 is “ROTARY CON- NECTS THE WORLD”. My number one goal for the year is to help facilitate these connec- tions. Rotary gives us many op- portunities to connect. Rotari- ans can connect with each other at the Club level. Clubs can connect with each other at the District level. Districts can con- nect with each other at the Zone level. Zones can connect with each other at the International level. Rotary can connect with other non-Rotarian organiza- tions. If we take advantage of all these opportunities to con- nect with one another, imagine the lasting changes we can make in the world, in our com- munities and in ourselves. This month our District Com- munity and International grants will be awarded. We have received 24 grant applica- tions for 2018-2019. The Grants Committee met on June 27 th to evaluate the applications and determine which grants will be funded. The applica- tions all reflect how our local clubs are trying to improve their communities or the world. They all reflect one or more of Rotary’s Areas of Focus: Pro- moting Peace, Fighting Disease, Providing Clean Water, Saving Mothers and Children, Support- ing Education and Growing Lo- cal Economies. They also illus- trate Rotarians connecting with other community organizations. Finally, the grant applications illustrate how Rotarians are “People of Action” not afraid to roll up their sleeves and get to work. Best of luck to all the ap- plicants. Carousel Day will be held on Saturday, July
20th from 11 am to 5 pm at CFJ Park, 198
CFJ Blvd. This fun community event is orga-
nized by the Johnson City Rotary Club with help
and sponsorship from many local businesses.
The event is free to attend, and includes a varie-
ty of entertainers, musicians, food and craft
vendors, and representatives from multiple
community organizations and agencies!
The Carousel Modelers and Miniatures Associa-
tion is holding their annual convention during
Carousel Day and will have displays in the car-
ousel area.
The NY Volunteer Infantry Regiment Reenac-
tors will provide historic Civil War re-
enactments throughout the day, and Gary Hin-
men will be giving demonstrations on Black-
smithing throughout the day as well.
Many community organizations will be on hand
to promote their work in JC and the triple cities
area including Your Home Public Library, UHS,
the Goodwill Theatre, Finch Hollow and the
YMCA.
Local food vendors will be offering traditional
fair-foods, including speidies, ice cream, fried
dough, cotton candy and more! Local arts and
crafts vendors will be selling their creations.
Music will be provided throughout the day.
Children’s entertainers will include: Will Staf-
ford, Juggler extraordinaire, from 12- 2:00 pm;
Tim Cleary, Magician- performances at 12:15,
12:45 and 1:15 pm; and Grandpa Joe the Organ
Man will be performing all day. DJ Rich Bird-
sall will be spinning tunes.
The carousel at CFJ Park was donated by
George F. Johnson to the children of the com
munity in 1923. It is the largest of the area’s six
EJ carousels, housing 72 different horses. When
Johnson donated the carousel, he did so with
one stipulation – rides will remain free forever.
George F. had been turned away from a carousel
ride for lack of money when he was a child, and
he wanted to be certain that no child in the Tri-
ple Cities would ever feel that shame. The CFJ
Carousel is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places and draws visitors from through
the Southern Tier.
Village Historian Janet Ottman will be sharing
more details on local and carousel history
throughout the day.
This event represents a renewal of community
spirit in the Village of Johnson City. Revitaliza-
tion not just about new buildings or funding, it
is also closely tied to community service and
participation. We are all a part of the communi-
ty, and the partnerships developed to bring Car-
ousel Day back are a great example of the old
adage “many hand make light work.” Let’s not
talk about the Village’s heyday as having been
long-gone…instead let’s work together to make
tomorrow and the next day the best days in
Johnson City’s history.

Finish at a “mystery” restaurant for drinks and dinner (on your own).

Hope Lake Park offers swimming, boating, hiking and a pavilion. The District will provide use of the pavilion and a shuttle to take guests to other Greek Peak events.
A BBQ lunch will be served at the pavilion from noon to 1 pm. Children 5 and under are free, chil-dren 6-12 are $20 and adults are $25. The District will also be organizing a corn hole event. India as part of the JHoole project formed by Hannah Warren, a speaker at our District
Conference. Hannah formed this project to empower women to raise funds to support their families.
District 7170 supported this Global Grant. Now the project sells their merchandise globally. $10.00
goes to the JHoole project. $5.00 goes to the Rotary Foundation. Hannah is developing a larger manu-
facturing space in India .
