IT ’S ALL ABOUT THE WOOL

Do you know the difference between Plaids and Tartans?All tartans are plaids, but not all plaids are tartans. Tartans often have broad bands of colors, always at right angles to each other, mixed with narrow horizontals and verticals. In Scotland, a clan often has its very own identifiable tartan colored in a very specific way that is registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans. Pendleton identifies authentic tartans with special supplemental hangtags.

From the very beginning, Pendleton shirts have been defined by Pendleton fabrics. The strength and durability of a Pendleton shirt starts with 100% virgin wool. No other fiber can take or hold a dye like wool, so our yarn-dyed plaids stay true and vibrant for generations. This means that a Pendleton wool shirt is an investment in quality that can be passed from father to son to grandson.

A Pendleton plaid is recognizable at a glance. Our earliest shirts from the 1920s

and 1930s were often sewn of solids and mixes. Then came the plaids, from the subtle ombres and shadow plaids of the 1940s and 1950s, to the brighter checks and tartans of the 1960s and 1970s.

Our shirt styles have endured along with our woolens, though collars and cuffs have widened and narrowed according to the fashions of the day. Each time-tested model brings you the best in wool shirts.

The Story Begins In 1924, wool shirts were utilitarian items; warm, durable, an excellent first line in the defense against the elements. They were uniformly drab, but all that was about to change, thanks to Pendleton Woolen Mills.

At Pendleton Woolen Mills, Clarence Morton Bishop envisioned a different kind of fabric for a man’s wool shirt. Pendleton’s sophisticated weaving capabilities were producing vibrant trade blankets. Why not bring that same weaving and color know-how to flannel shirting?

After much weaving experimentation and hard work, Pendleton’s innovative Umatilla shirting fabric rolled off the loom. The rich colors in Pendleton’s woolen plaid shirts were completely new to the market in 1924. The positive response was immediate. It has also been enduring.

The Emergence of SportswearShirt production was initially brisk, but slowed during the 1940s as much of Pendleton’s production capability was needed for uniforms and blankets in the war effort.

After World War II, the concept of sportswear emerged in American society. This new concept of dressing was best explained as “what Dad wore when he wasn’t wearing his suit.” While hunting, fishing, or pursuing his hobbies, Dad very often wore a Pendleton shirt.

Throughout the 20th century, clothing trends have emerged from workwear and traveled into the fashion mainstream. The wool shirt was a perfect example. The American Look prevailed into the 1950s; casual and colorful, leisurewear symbolized the end of privation and the return of the good life.

Pendleton Shirts and Surf CultureIn the early 1960s, Pendleton shirts hit the airwaves courtesy of the Majorettes, whose song “White Levis” became a number one hit in 1963.

But before that, a group called The Pendletones was singing about the California surfing scene. They changed their name to the Beach Boys, but kept their uniform of Pendleton shirts worn over tee shirts with khakis. The band wore this blue and charcoal plaid shirt on the covers of 45s and LPs throughout the 1960s.

Distinctly PendletonToday, Pendleton’s wool plaid shirts are more current than ever with a diverse group of consumers. Select Pendleton shirt styles are available in both Classic Fit and Fitted. Fitted models are cut closer to the body with a longer sleeve than our Classic Fit. Hangtags identify Fitted styles.

The Board Shirt, in both a Fitted and Classic cut, is still a favorite with surfers and a new generation of snow and skate boarders. The Fabric Most Pendleton wool shirts are sewn in either Umatilla woolen or worsted wool.

Umatilla is a versatile medium weight 100% virgin wool fabric that takes its name from Oregon’s Umatilla County, where Pendleton buys raw stock from local ranchers. Umatilla county is home to the Pendleton, Oregon mill.

In a time of sustainability and environmental consciousness, this biodegradable renewable resource remains longer-lasting and better looking than synthetic fabrics.

The unique characteristics of the individual wool fibers give our fabrics the ability to hold a shape, resist wrinkles and withstand wear. This makes wool great for travel. Wool can be stretched or twisted and its cells return to their original position.

Wool fibers spring back to shape keeping their open, porous nature. Wool provides the most warmth with the least weight. The air trapped inside (about 80% of wool fabric volume) makes wool an excellent insulator. Wool is Nature’s original outdoor “performance” fiber.

Unless it is in direct contact with flame, wool will extinguish itself. The denser the weave and the greater the fabric weight, the less likely it is to char because of its smaller oxygen content. Fire departments recommend the use of wool blankets, rugs or coats to put out flames.

Wool has a permanent natural luster it never loses, even a�er years of hard wear. It absorbs dyes until it is completely saturated so colors stay brilliant. No other fiber can be spun or woven into such a variety of weights, textures, finishes and colors.

Wool repels light water, like a rain shower, because of the membrane on the outer scales. In very wet conditions, wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight without feeling damp. And because of insulation ability, wool “breathes,” allowing the body’s natural moisture to pass through.

Pendleton sources wool �om more than 30 different breeds of sheep, so that we can match the qualities of the fiber to the finished fabrics. By controlling the entire manufacturing process, we can create the best fabric for each use.

KnitKnitted fabrics are produced by interlocking rows of yarns and loops in a continuous flow. Generally, knitted fabric has more stretch.

WovenWeaving creates cloth by interlacing two sets of yarns at right angles. The “warp” runs lengthwise. The “weft” runs cross-wise from the filling. Generally, woven fabric is more stable.

The Sierra Nevadas are the traditional grounds of many Native peoples. The Sierra Miwok, Mono, Kawaiisu, Northern Paiute and Tubatulabal tribes have lived and hunted here. The Paiutes called its tallest granite peak Tumanguya, or, “the Very Old Man.” Also called Mt. Whitney, it is the highest point in the contiguous United States. The mountains of the 400-mile range are represented by stepped peaks, with arrows guarding the streams and rivers of the Great Basin watershed.

The Sonoran Desert in the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico is the largest and hottest desert in North America, with a mystical landscape that features the rare and unique plant life that’s adapted to the harshness of the climate. Peaks and hooks represent these botanical wonders. The long-armed Saguaro cactus stretches its arms to the desert sky, along with Sonora’s other spiny, spiky cacti; organ pipe, cholla, prickly pear, fish hook and more.

In 1923, President Warren G. Harding and his wife, Florence, visited Oregon’s Blue Mountain Country to dedicate a portion of the Old Oregon Trail. At the ceremony, leaders of the Cayuse and Umatilla Nations presented Mrs. Harding with a newly designed blanket based on the Chief Joseph blanket by Pendleton. In soft colors, the new design represented the First Lady’s sincerity and forthright nature—qualities greatly respected by Native Americans. Named the Harding Robe in 1926, it remains one of the most sought-after patterns manufactured by Pendleton Woolen Mills today.

Great Plains Native Americans used an eight-pointed geometric star on hide paintings, tipis, beaded moccasins and clothing, with each point corresponding to one of the planets that shine as the Morning Star. The Lakota Sioux have translated their heritage of painted buffalo robes into intricate and dazzling quilts featuring this motif. Using muted colors that echo the original painted hides, the Morning Star rises, promising a new day.

Journey West - RK500, RK496, GM122 (hat)

This intricate design celebrates the pioneering spirit of Pendleton's founder, weaver Thomas L. Kay, who journeyed from England to arrive in Oregon in 1863. It is a tribute to the generations of weavers that have continued his legacy of quality. The original design was discovered in a 19th-century European mill and included the designer’s notes written neatly along the sides. This work of art inspired a pattern of appealing geometric shapes and lines. The hooked images inside the large diamonds are common symbols of good fortune.

Thunderbird - RK501

The mighty Thunderbird is important to many Native American nations as a protector and messenger that carries prayers to the upper worlds during storms. In some traditions, this fearsome deity is a punisher that travels up and down with bolts of lightning while beating his gigantic wings to create thunder. In this striking pattern, the “Rain Bird” creates the chaos of storms to bring the renewal of life that follows a downpour.

Pendleton wool shirt fabrics are woven in one of two company-owned USA mills, using 100% virgin wool. The Pendleton weaving legacy dates to 1863, when founder Thomas Kay arrived in Oregon. A British master weaver, Kay worked in mills and went on to establish his own in Salem, Oregon (now a museum). His daughter, Fanny Kay Bishop, guided her three sons in the purchase of an idled mill in Pendleton, Oregon, which reopened in 1909 with the full support of the community. The Washougal mill began operations in 1912, expanding the range of fabrics. Both mills are still weaving today under the leadership of

the Bishop family, descendants of Thomas Kay.
