FROM OUR PASTOR

God, we acknowledge you today as Lord, not only of individuals, but of nations and governments. We thank you for the privilege of being able to organize ourselves politically and of knowing that political loyalty does not have to mean disloyalty to you. We thank you for your law, which our Founding Fathers acknowledged and recognized as higher than any human law. We thank you for the opportunity that this election year puts before us, to exercise our solemn duty not only to vote, but to influence countless others to vote. Lord, we pray that your people may be awakened. Let them realize that while politics is not their salvation, their response to you requires that they be politically active. Awaken your people to know that they are not called to be a sect fleeing the world but rather a community of faith renewing the world. Awaken them that the same hands lifted up to you in prayer are the hands that pull the lever in the voting booth; that the same eyes that read your Word are the eyes that read the names on the ballot; and that they do not cease to be Christians when they enter the voting booth. Awaken your people to a commitment to justice to the sanctity of marriage and the family, to the dignity of each individual human life, and to the truth that human rights begin when human lives begin, and continue through natural death. Lord, we rejoice today that we are citizens of your kingdom. May that make us all the more committed to being faithful citizens on earth. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Based on a prayer written by Father Frank Pavone, Priests for Life

I so strongly encourage those who are eligible to vote, to Check Your Voter Registration Status. Not sure if you’re even registered to vote in Virginia? Can’t remember the last time you voted? Don’t know where you’re supposed to vote? Just visit the following link to find out! www.CheckYourVoterRegistration.com.

Not registered? Simply follow the directions for Virginia at www.elections.virginia.gov/registration/view-your-info. For more local information, you can visit www.pwcvotes.org.

I also encourage everyone to join me daily, reciting the PRAYER IN PREPARATION FOR ELECTION DAY, based on a prayer written by Father Frank Pavone, Priests for Life (see below).

Let me call attention to this week’s PARISH ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT bulletin insert. As you will notice, we are in relatively good financial shape in light of the Covid-19 Pandemic and ended last fiscal year with a slight net operating surplus of $22,851. This was due in part to the $140,780 we received as part of the Federal Government’s Payroll Protection Program. As you can imagine, our present challenges are all too real for those among us who have lost their jobs, or are uncertain of when they resume a regular work routine. This certainly explains

why our weekly collections have dropped 25% from pre-covid amounts and 15% lower than what our new current budget is projecting. If it is at all possible, I would like to ask parishioners who are able, to consider increasing your weekly offering to help cover those who, at this time, are understandably unable to give, or can only give very little. Even if this increase is temporary, in order to help us get through our present crisis, any additional help would be greatly appreciated. On behalf of our Finance Council and all of us here, I want to express my deep, deep gratitude for your generous support and the ongoing sacrificial offerings that you make. They will go a long way to assisting us “build God’s Kingdom” here in Lake Ridge and beyond. Christ’s blessings, ~ Fr. Bashista

PRAYER FOR THOSE SERVING OUR COUNTRY

Dear Gracious God, You know that our military and first responders ride

an emotional roller coaster and even when their efforts are successful, the things they see and do take a heavy toll emotionally. Please guard their

hearts and minds. Restore their mental and emotional resources when they have been depleted. And let them not become weary in their good work

(Galatians 6:9), in Jesus’ name, Amen.

September 20, 2020— 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“So the last will be first and the first last”. - MATTHEW 20:16 You've heard the saying “it's not where you start, but how you finish.” This certainly applies to this Bible passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own lives, but for the lives of others as well. We are called to generously share our gifts with others, not hoard them for our own use. Our sincere gratitude and cheerful generosity will help us live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives.

PARISH EVENTS—RESPECT LIFE

SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON 2020 LIFE CHAIN Sunday, October 4th, 2:30pm-3:30pm

Life Chain is a peaceful and prayerful public witness of pro-life Americans standing for one hour praying for our nations and for an end to abortion. It is a visual statement of solidarity by the Christian community that abortion kills children and that the Church supports the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception.

The Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Life Chain will be in Woodbridge at our usual location near Potomac Mills between Burger King and Kaiser Permanente (North Side). Signs will be distributed at the site. Multiple churches will come together, lining both sides of Smoketown Road. Stand with thousands of pro-lifers throughout the USA! You will be a light in a darkened world as you help put an end to abortion through prayers! Bring your entire family. Rain or shine. Covid-19 Mask Wearing and Social Distancing practices will be observed.
