Suspense is an anxious or uncertain feeling while

waiting for something to happen or become known.

Mystery is something that can not be explained or

understood, something puzzling.

-Low angle of the stairs- this makes the audience

wonder where they lead to

-Some light at the bottom of the stairs, but the

further up it gets, the darker the light becomes-There is a red strip going down the stairs- red is

associated with danger, warning and alert

-Point of view shot of the man walking up the stairs

-You hear each squeak of every stair the man

steps on

-As he gets very close to the top, non-diegeticmusic starts to play, it gets louder and louder

-There is a door at the top

-It flings open without him even flickering a

movement

-The lights in the room fall down to the ground

instantly and it goes pitch black

Suspense and Mystery are both created in this as

-The audience are scared as to what is at the top ofthe stairs and if something or someone is up there

waiting for him to arrive, this creates Suspense

The audience dont know where the stairs lead to

and why hes going up them which creates Mystery

a darkened corridor with a door at the end of it,

out of which a beam of light shines, laminating a

thin strip down the corridor

-Mid-shot and tilt of camera up to long shot of the door

-During the tilt, a red carpet is shown with dark enclosing

walls

-As soon as the long shot of the door appears, a quiet piano

starts to gently play/ a slow sound of water dripping to theground starts to play

-A point of view shot is used as the person walks slowly

towards the door

The viewers get scared as the lighting is almost onthe edge of pitch black and the walls are enclosing.

This enrolls a sense of claustrophobia. This creates

Suspense

The audience wonder what is behind this door andwhy is this person there alone. This creates Mystery

The glow of a tip of a cigarette in

shadowy darkness-To begin this mystery there is a close up of a younggirl with her hood up, lurking in the darkness down

an ally in Central London. At this point the audienceare unable to see her face.

-As she smokes the cigarette , all you can see is theglow of the tip and the deep cuts over her dirtyhands.

-This follows to a cut to a long shot of her and a pan

of the overflowing ally bins, smashed glass andrubbish. This is so the audience get a round idea ofwhere the young girl is.

-Close- up of the girl smoking. She lifts her face andlooks up at the street lights , her makeup issmudged and she has a bloody lip, this is done toforeshadow a sense of fright and despair.

-Girl throws cigarette to the ground. The camerafollows the fall until it gradually ends to a extremeclose up on the cigarette slowly burning out. This isa representation on the girls life heading for ruins.

-The last shot is a mid shot of the girl walking out ofthe ally and disappearing into the crowds of Londonleaving he audience desperate to find out moreabout the girl.

Mysteryis created in this because

-The fact that the girls face is in darkness due to itbeing covered by her hood makes the audience

question why they cant see her.

-The audience wonder why she has cuts on her

hands and face and why she happens to be alone inan alleyway in the darkness

roof high above the teeming, heedless city

-Mid shot of a man clinging on from a guttering of aroof above a city. This makes the audience alert to

danger, concluding to the ending result and the harsh

reality which is death.

-Close- up shot of the man slowly losing grip, his

fingers are hurting him due to the weight and thestruggle to keep grip.

-Non-diegetic music is used at a fast beat to highlight

the urgency of the man finding safety.

-Fast sharp cut to the clock to portray a sense that

time is running out for the man that is stuck; there's no

where to go, no safety. This follows to an aerial shot of

passerbys , which is concurrent to the fast music , this

foreshadows no one can help , he is isolated away

from society.

- The man cries for help to show he is beyonddesperate for his safety

The viewers are uncertain as to what is going tohappen to the man, will he survive or will he not?

The fast cuts create a feeling of time running out,

this makes the audience worried and highlights

suspense

little office with the filing cabinet that has nothing but a

quart of scotch on it-Point of view of man walking, he looks up at the

neon sign

-non-diegetic scary music is playing, it is amplified

as he gets closer to the cabinet

-cross-cuts to mid shot of cabinet

-close- up of scotch bottle empty-cross-cut of neon sign starting to flicker, about to

break (metaphorical as the man could be about to

be in danger/die)

The constant use of cross-cutting strengthens thefeeling of fear in the audience as they are nervous

as to what is about to happen

The flickering sign warns the audience that

something bad could happen at any moment. Thismakes the audience sit on the edge of their seats

waiting for something to emerge.

taking a shower.
