Aim

The aim of this survey is to find out the things that my audience look for most in a magazine. It will help me find out what bands and genre’s they like the most, as well as finding out what draws them to a magazine the most. Since it is strictly a music magazine I have asked mainly music questions, centred around how much music affects their lives.

Q1: how old are you?16 17 18 19 Other

(26)Other (37)

4 6 5 1 1 1

These results show that the main majority of my readers are in the 16-19 age group, with a few of them being a lot older. This means that I should aim my magazine, both the content and appearance, towards those age groups. I should use techniques that I know appeals to this age group, as well as using bands and other things that are currently popular within the genre of my magazine within this age range. This will help boost sales and appeal of the magazine, though it may also make it a challenge to sell a lot of them; this age range isn’t known for having a large amount of disposable income, and as such I may not sell as many as if I was trying to appeal to an older audience.

Q2

This shows that the majority of the people who will be buying the magazine are male, as over 20% more males answered my survey then females. Because of this I should target it mainly, though not exclusively, towards a male audience. The reason I have decided to not target it exclusively towards male audiences is because almost 40% of the people who answered the survey were female, meaning they are still a sizeable chunk of the audience.

Others:Heavy metal / Power metalScreamo / Hardcore rock / Death metalGrunge (x2)

A wide variety of genres was chosen in this survey, as people were able to choose more than one genre if they listened to more than one. However, the overwhelming results showed that Rock and Metal were, by far, the most popular with my audience. However, because a large range was chosen it gives me free reign to do the magazine on a number of different genres, as I know I have a fanbase for everything except dubstep. However, because the overwhelming results showed that Rock and Metal were the most popular I plan on doing my magazine on those, in order to draw in the largest amount of fans possible.

The audience had free reign to type in any band they liked for this, and because of this no one band has more then two people who suggested it. However, four bands were suggested twice, meaning that they are the most popular. I will likely look into the bands and see what genre of music they play, in order to tailor my magazine around that genre, which will obviously be the most popular with the audience.

Q5: Do you play an instrument yourself? If so, which instrument?

None Guitar Drums Vocals

12 5 1 3

This shows that the majority of people that read my magazine do not actually play any instrument, yet it also shows that six readers do play an instrument, with at least three of them playing more than one. This is good as it supports the type of magazine I wish to create, as well as the type of genre I wish to make it about, as the instruments played are most common in the genres I wish to write about.

Q6This shows that the majority of the people that filled out my questionnaire never buy any music magazines at all. This could be both a good thing and a bad thing to me, as while it means that they are obviously not used to buying magazines, it also means that my magazine will not be in competition with any other, more famous magazines.

Q7: What is the most important feature in a magazine?

The title The content Detailed breakdowns of genres

Quizzes interviews Posters

1 6 1 1 6 3

These results, while varied, are kind of similar in some aspects. The biggest results are the content and interviews, with each having 6 votes. This means that I will focus on the inside of the magazine rather then the appearances, in order to appeal to my audience.

Q8: Do you read any other music magazines?

None KERRANG!

12 6

This shows that, out of my perspective audience, very few currently read any other music magazines, and those that do read other magazines currently read KERRANG!. This is good for me, as Kerrang normally writes about the same type of music that I plan to write about, albeit with some extra genres thrown in.

Q9This was just a test so I could see how much money my perspective audience would be willing to spend on a music magazine, so I know the price range I should price mine in. This shows that most people are willing to pay between £1 and £2.50, meaning I have a broad range of prices to choose between.

Q10This shows that the vast majority of the people who filled out the questionnaire listen to music a large amount of time every day, over 15.5 hours per week. This is great because, as a music magazine, it is best if my audience is passionate about music, and listening to it for such a long amount of time shows how much they appreciate it.
