offering US$45 billionfora 100% stakeinMTN, which would bethelargestoverseasacquisitioneverbyanIndianfirm.However,thetalksfell.

InMay 2009,Bharti Airtel again confirmed thathe wasintalks withMTNand companiesagreed

to discussthepotentialtransactionexclusivelyby 31 July 2009.Bharti Airtel said inastatement"Bharti Airtel Ltd ispleased toannouncethatithasrenewed itseffortforasignificantpartnership withMTN Group".

Talkseventuallyended withoutagreement,somesourcesstatingthatthis was duetooppositionfromthe South Africangovernment.
