I never stopped practicing. I was always pitching with my dad orthrowing with my brother.” Morton said one goal she has for herself next season “is to not getso anxious about if the next pitch will be good” and just play the game. “I think we get in our heads too much,” Morton said. “We have theskill, but we need to be more mentally tough, and we are steadilyimproving in this area.” Morton, who has also played clarinet for the past six years and hasreceived Division I ratings at UIL Solo and Ensemble contests, said aplayoff berth next season would be special. “It would mean a lot not just to me but the entire team,” Mortonsaid. “We’ve put so much time and energy into this sport. It would begreat to know our work is paying off.” Ortega said Rayanna has had a busy summer preparing for her sen-ior year on the mound. “Not getting the chance to complete the season last year hassparked her to prepare for her senior year with intensity and purpose,”Ortega said. “She attended our Summer Pride program and we havecontinued to see growth in her speed, strength, agility, and skills.Rayanna has also focused on adding a few breaking pitches to herrepertoire, which will help keep hitters off balance. “Hard work is something Ray does not shy away from, and as weapproach our season this spring, Rayanna will play a key role as theLady Bears work to capture a playoff spot.”

Visit WaterIsAwesome.com to learn ways to water wiser.

Get on the path to conserving water.

From the Trinity River to the Trinity Trails, water

is one of our most valuable resources. To help

keep North Texas thriving, consider these water

conservation tips. Water your lawn deeply and

infrequently. Make sure sprinklers are in working

order and that they’re watering the lawn, not

the concrete. Water only after 6 p.m. and before

10 a.m., when it’s not as hot. Do your part to help

keep Texas water on tap because water is awesome.

Use it. Enjoy it. Just don’t waste it.

WSISD will extend the school day by 30 minutes for the 2020-21school year. The Texas Education Agency has advised school districts to preparein the event of a district-wide closure during the year due to COVID-19. The additional 30 minutes will enable WSISD to “bank” additionalstudent minutes. This will help ensure that students are not required toattend school beyond the days set in the calendar. Here are the new school hours. Drop off and pick up times will be provided at a later date.

Astronaut Rick Husband by Dr. Ken Bridges

He had wanted to be an astronaut his entirelife. Rick Husband achieved that dream and morein his short, tragic life. Husband was born in Amarillo in 1957. As hegrew up, he saw the triumphs of the earlyAmerican space program, inspiring him to becomean astronaut himself. He graduated from AmarilloHigh School in 1975 and attended Texas TechUniversity in Lubbock. After graduating college with a degree inmechanical engineering in 1980, he was earned acommission as a lieutenant in the United StatesAir Force.

He entered the pilot training program as a firststep to becoming an astronaut. He graduated fromhis initial pilot training in Oklahoma in 1981 andwas later trained on the F-4 fighter. By 1985, the air force had made him aninstructor for other pilots training on the F-4. Twoyears later, he became a test pilot at Edwards AirForce Base in California, flying the F-4 and F-15. The Air Force later assigned him to a pilotexchange program with the Royal Air Force. Hewould end up flying more than 40 different typesof aircraft during his career. He continued his education at the same time, earning a masters degree in mechanical engineer-ing for California State University at Fresno in1990. He tried several times to become an astronaut, but NASA turned him down three times. Husbandpersisted and was accepted into the astronaut pro-gram in 1994. He worked on studies of futuremanned Moon and Mars missions as well as train-ing for a future space shuttle mission. On May 27, 1999, he piloted the shuttleDiscovery into orbit and became the first astronautto dock with the newly completed InternationalSpace Station. He traveled more than 4 millionmiles through 153 orbits on this mission. While proud of his achievements, Husbandwas also devoted to his wife and children. He wasalso a man of faith. He spoke to several churchesabout his experiences as an astronaut but devotedmost of his homilies to the importance of God inhis life. On Jan. 16, 2003, now an Air Force Colonel,Husband commanded the shuttle Columbia as itreached orbit on a scientific research mission. Themission was successful and otherwise uneventfulas the shuttle prepared to land on Feb. 1. However, when the shuttle had initially takenoff, debris from the external fuel tank had brokenoff and struck the protective tiles on the shuttle’swing. The crew was unaware of the damage toColumbia’s protective heat shield. As the craftdescended into the upper atmosphere, tempera-tures on the shuttle’s hull exceeded 3,000 degrees. Without the critical protection to protect thecraft from the intense forces it would experienceduring re-entry, the shuttle could not safely reachthe surface. The shuttle began to disintegrate. Eventually, the crew compartment lost pres-surization and the astronauts all lost consciousnesswithin seconds. The investigation that followednever determined how much the crew knew of theimpending disaster. Rick Husband and his six crewmates died onthat terrible morning in 2003. The world mourned the loss of the astronauts.

Astronomers named a series of newly discoveredasteroids after each of the crew members.Amarillo renamed its local airport after Husbandin honor of its fallen son. For the remainder of the shuttle program, newsafety precautions were enacted to protect futureshuttle missions. These precautions includedinspections of the heat shield once the space shut-tles settled into orbit. The shuttle program endedin 2011. Rick Husband had reached the stars as he hadalways dreamed. One of many great Americanexplorers, he died a hero.
