• Started as a little town, that primarily functioned as a harbour for the neighbor town.

• After the arrival of the railroad in 1865, the town grew explosively and became one

of Denmark´s most important railway connection points.

• In 1939 Struer had the first high school in Western Jutland. Today around 750

students attend the school.

• Struer received privileged status as a merchant town in 1917.

THE HISTORY OF STRUER

STRUER MARINA• Struer is situated on the southwest side of Venø Bay

in the fjord and has a marina near the city center.

Particularly in the sommer the marina is visited by

tourist.

• Struer Marina is the largest marina in the Limfjord

with its 550 seats.

• Around the Limfjord is a voyage for old Danish

wooden or copies thereof. Around the Limfjord is an

annual event with about 50 old wooden ships.

STRUER - CULTURAL LIFE• Apollon Struer is a cinema situated near the town

center.

• Apollon in Struer has 3 large THX-audiences with 400

seats. All audiences have an exellent soundsystem -

Dolby Digital Surround EX.

• The soundsystem makes Apollon the best cinema in

terms of sound.

• Apollon has a large foyer with a café and restaurant.

STRUER – FOLKETS HUS

• Struer main location for music events is called ”Folkets Hus (The Peoples House),

which is located in the center of Struer. This is a local assemble hall and cultural

meeting house, offering a variety of cultural activities and music concerts.

• Beside ”Folkets Hus” we find the school of music, who offers musiclesson for children,

adolescents and adults. The school of music also cooperate with Struer Østre Skole,

where they once a week gives the youngest pupils music education.

STRUER - GIMSINGHOVED• The beautiful earliere farmestate Gimsinghoved are used as a cultural center for art

exhibitions, literary evenings, jazz and classical concerts.

• Gimsinghoved has also a beautiful garden, which in the summertime is used for outdoor

events.

• On the first floor there is a painting workshop for local artists.

STRUER – STRUER MUSEUM• The museum of Struer is established in the oldest building in the city. Today Struer Museum is a

museum for the history of Struer.

• The attractions in the museum include:

• The history of the Limfjord for the development of the area

• The history of Struer as a railroad center.

• The Buchholtz House and the story of the spirit of authors

• The Bang & Olufsen section, where you can experience the history of a business adventure,

which has made Bang & Olufsen to an international succes and a world-famous design icon.

• In 2015 Struer Museum will have established a sound science center, where visitors through

tests, experiments and games can learn about sound.

Struer – Bang & Olufsen• Struer is mainly known for hosting the world famous electronics company Bang &

Olufsen.

• Bang & Olufsen started in 1925, when the two young engineers Peter Bang and

Svend Olufsen started a small company. With high quality products and a cutting

edge design the firm has become an international design icon and known

worldwide.

• Bang & Olufsen has their own museum situated beside Struer Museum.

STRUER – CITY OF SOUNDThe idea of ”The City of Sound” arose during the work with the culture-policy of the municipality in 2008, where Bang and Olufsen presented the idea of “The City of Sound” for Struer Municipality. Sound has a special meaning in Struer. For almost 90 years, the world-famous firm Bang & Olufsen has taken part in shaping the town and area. Not only as an important place of work for thousands of citizens, but also as an entrepreneur for the identity of the whole area and focus on technology and design.

Since the idea has been presented different constellations have been working on the idea of “The City of Sound” and have come up with activities, which relate to sound. Struer as ”The City of Sound” is being mentioned in the strategy of development, business policy and the strategy of culture.

The project of ”The City of Sound” is the frame around the development of settlement, employment and branding of Struer. ”The City of Sound” is a common platform for ideas of innovation within trade, tourism, cultural activities and development of skills.

”The City of Sound” is about keeping and developing competences which already are in the area and about creating welfare benefits in a new and different way. All the communal persons and companies, departments and institutions as the school are obliged to put sound in use in their specific area in the years to come.

THE IDEAS BEHIND THE CITY OF SOUNDThe City of Sound is not only a question of creating a brand, but is also an attempt to involve the citizens, local enterprises and cultural institutions in living and creating The city of sound. Sound is going to be visible in cityplanning, business, events, tourism, culture, and also increating new and smart solutions to the challenges in our core services.

There are plans for infrastructural projects such as parks with audio-walks with integratedsound making elements, thus focusing on creating distinct soundscapes.

During 2015 the museum is establishing an exploratorium on sound and an audiwalk, which take you though the city, time and history.

Through The City of Sound the Municipality of Struer wants to establish itself as a testbed for designing solutions based on sound technology thus making it possible for companies and institutions alike to test products and services in a wide range of different areas covering welfare services as well as business and productdevelopment.Thus The City of Sound incorporates both economic, social and environmental aspects.

STRUER ØSTRE SKOLE• Struer Østre Skole is a primary school with nearly 60 years

tradition.

• There are approximately 400 pupils and 45 teachers.

• The school is divided in to three sections – A, B and C.

• The A-section is preschool from 0 to third grade

• The B-section is from fourth to six grade

• The C-section is from seventh to ninth grade.

• The children with special needs is included in the classes

or divided into small groups according to their age.

• Within the next few years is planned that the Struer Østre

Skole shall merge with Gimsing Skole.

• Whether the municipality will build a new bigger school or Struer Østre Skole have to

moved out to Gimsing Skole is not yet known. This will be decided in February
