Bokashi for food wasteA project to help curb illegal dumpingin Enkanini grew by leaps and boundsin 2012.

To celebrate the success, the organisersheldanyear-endcelebrationatKayaman-di High School at the end of 2012.“TheinformalsettlementofEnkaniniis

estimatedtohousealmost4 500peopleandwas established about seven years ago. Most people living there do not have elec-tricity, except those that tap it illegallyfrom Kayamandi or Plankenbrug, theneighbouring industrial area,” saidproject coordinator Vannessa von derHeyde, amasters student at the Sustaina-bility InstituteandfundedbytheNationalResearch Foundation. “People make useof a total of 32 communal taps for theirwa-terneedsandthereareatotalof80commu-nal flushingtoilets inthesettlement.Roadaccess to the settlement is very limited.”The municipality performs household

waste removal from seven concrete skips once aweek, butattimes, foodwasteremainsintheskipsfor weeks. In June 2012, Stellenbosch Municipality per-

formed a waste characterization study of thegreater Stellenbosch area, including Kayamandiand Enkanini. The results of this showed thatmore that 50% (inmass) of waste being producedin the informal settlement consisted of organicmatter. “Following the characterization study, apilotproject focusingsolelyon foodwastewas im-plemented, with the objectives of taking foodwasteoutofthegeneralwastestreamandprocess-ing it in a different manner, with the reasoningthat removing the most hazardous material outof the skipswill help not onlyminimize the exist-ing problem, but also turn waste into a potentialresource through methods such as composting.“Bokashi, manufactured by Probio in Devon

Valley, was chosen as the treatment method forfoodwaste.Bokashiisawheatbranmaterialinoc-ulated with efficient micro-organisms (EM). TheEM kick start a fermentation process, so insteadof food rotting, it ferments and can be stored for

an extended period time.Once the foodwaste hasfermented sufficiently, it can be added to soil toincrease soil quality.”The partners in this pilot project are Stellen-

boschMunicipality,ProbioAdvancedProbiotics, and Von der Heyde. “The pilot project is set uparound 100 households, all residing within theboundaries of Enkanini. Household memberswere requested to attend an information session, which was held by myself and three Enkaninicommunity members who have been workingwith me right from the start of my research.“Each household was given a Bokashi unit

whichconsistsoftwo25litrebucketsplacedinsideone another, with the inside bucket having holesdrilled into it to allow for liquid drainage. Eachunit has clear instructions in Xhosa written onits side and it was explained very carefully to allparticipants how to use the buckets and theBokashi EM,” Von der Heyde said. The participants then drop off their Bokashi-

treated food waste at a designated address inEnkanini Section E. They are hoping to extendthe project further early this year.

Back to work and schoolwellness for the year aheadSleeping in or doing things at your own time, and then the alarm bell announcing that firstdayofschoolorworkcanbearudeawakening. It is time to head back to work or school.

Here are a few health andwellness guidelinesfor the year ahead:

) First day chaos: If you’re heading to anewschool, trytoarrangeavisitbeforeclassesbegin.Explore anyareas that are of particularinterest such as the sports facilities, library,or science labs.Your first day is also the time to bring in

school supplies and paperwork. It can help topack your back-pack the night before schoolstarts so you’re not scrambling around at thelastminute looking forwhatyouneed. Inaddi-tion to packing basic supplies (such as note-books, pens, pencils, and a calculator), huntdown any of the school forms that need to behanded in.

) Pre-pack easy on-the-go meals: Thesecould include anything from sandwiches andwraps towholewheat rolls. Somegreat combi-nations are a tuna sandwich with dressing, asweet-chilli chicken, lettuce and carrot wrapor a ham and fat-free cottage cheese low GIroll.

) Know what is required from you: Setfive minutes aside the day before returningto school or work and plan. Your first day isusually made up of the plan for the first quar-ter or the year ahead. Getting your mind tofocus is key.Youwill knowalready the resultsyouwant to attain and achieving it is amatterof putting a plan together, and then puttingthe plan into action.Allow for different personalities, different

situations, discrepancies – all the thingsworkandschoolaremadeof–,butusuallyamistakecan be put right again.

) Plan ahead: Get a wall calendar or per-sonal planner. Mark projects as they are as-

signed and list any other time commitmentsyouhave. If thecalendarbecomestoo full, holdoff until things calm down.

) Stay ahead: Try not to fall behind. If youfeel yourself falling behindand starting to feelfrustrated, slow down and re-group yourthoughts, thinking about what your end goalis. It’s better to get help early on than to waituntil things fall apart.

) Communication is the key: Keep regu-laropenlinesofcommunicationwithteachersand professional people who know what theyare doing as well as managers and supervi-sors.

) Important healthy eating habits: Thefollowing is a guide on how to make back toschool and work a whole lot easier withhealthy food choices:1. A good breakfast is the most important

meal of the day. Stick tohigh-fibre cereals likemuesli and add a yoghurt.2. Packed lunches are just as important –

wholewheat sandwiches or rollswith a fillingand fruit to accompany and a pure fruit juiceadd to a healthy lifestyle and great eating hab-its that can be sustained. Remember youreight glasses of water a day. Cheese portions, flavoured milk, biltong sticks, a fruit, unfla-voured pretzels, avocado and peanut butterare all favourite lunch box ingredients.3. Snacks are endless: Try fruit, crackers,

fish and other pastes on crackers, yoghurts, cereal bars, rice cakes and soup.4. Suppers can be just as easy –make double

portions of everything and freeze for anotherdinner night. Easy meals that can be frozeninclude spaghetti bolognaise, butterbean andtomato salad, quick and easy chicken-a-la-king, baked chicken, fish and roast potatoesand low-fat baked custards.– Information and tips on www.weigh-

I failed matric – now what?Every year in South Africa, thousands ofcandidates sit down to write their final ex-ams. While some pass with flying colours, others will be left feeling frustrated withtheir grades – faced with even tougher pros-pectsof findingworkwhenoneintwoyoungSouth Africans is already jobless.

“Matric is often mistakenly seen as a do-or-die situation,” saysJanineShamos, resil-ience therapist and lecturer . “The trick isfor matriculants to learn from their mis-takes – failing matric or not doing as wellas you’d hoped does not have to be the endof the road. From supplementary exams touniversity programmes, like the MidrandGraduateInstitute’sPre-degreeProgramme– the trick is to explore all your options.”

) SO, WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?“Candidates may apply for re-marking or

re-checking of examination scripts immedi-ately after receiving their results,” says Mr.Panyaza Lesufi, chief director of communi-cations and spokesperson for the Depart-ment of Basic Education. “The closing datefor application for a re-mark or re-check is23 January 2012. Application forms for re-marking or re-checking of examination an-swer scripts are available from schools orcentres where the candidates sat for the ex-amination.” The cost for a re-check is R12;for a re-mark, R70; and R150 to view yourexam script. Learners from no-fee schoolsare exempt from these fees.

) SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMSMatrics who failed less than three exams

can apply to write supplementary exams atthe start of 2012. They will need to registerat their education district office, with theirID, examresultsandexamnumber.Qualify-ing learners for supplementary should notwaste any time registering as there is a cut-off point. The supplementary exams arethen written between February and March. For more info, visit education.gov.za. Nofees will be charged for supplementary ex-ams.

) RE-DO YOUR MATRICLearners who do not qualify for supple-

mentaryexamsandareunder21areencour-aged to re-enrol in school as soonaspossibleto re-do their Matric. For those unable or

unwilling to return to the same school, pri-vate colleges suchasAbbotts present anoth-er option.

“If you fail Grade 12, it is possible to moveacross toanAbbotts college,” saysGregFill-more,GMof the specialist networkofGrade10, 11 and 12 colleges in South Africa. “Wehave a 100% pass rate as we’re a purely aca-demic institution, and include supervisedhomework periods.”

) FET COLLEGES“Candidates can also opt for vocational

training,” saysLesufi. “TheNationalCertif-icate (Vocational) and the N Courses (N3 –N6) accommodate learners who have notachieved a matric certificate and theselearners are able to exit the FET Collegewith a vocational qualification. Learnerswithcredits fromtheNationalSeniorCertif-icate (matric) will receive recognition forequivalent subjects when enrolling for theNC(V), which can serve as incentive for en-try to the Vocational stream.”

) BRIDGE THE GAPFor those who do pass matric, but would

like to improve their grades for entry intocertain courses or universities, a bridgingyear is a good option. Whilst currently inshort supply in South Africa, public benefitorganisations such as Equal Education andthe South African Education and Environ-ment Project (SAEP) in the Western Capeoffer limited places to youth to ensure theyare not just academically prepared, but alsohave thenecessary life skills tonavigate lifeat tertiary institutions.

) STUDYING WITHOUT MATRIC orMATRIC EXEMPTION

“Even if your matric certificate does notgive you university entrance, it’s possibleyou qualify for an alternative course ofstudy that, though slightly different, maystillbe in linewithyourcareeraspirations,”says Kerry Damons of Boston City Campusand Business College. “An option that’s of-ten disregarded or underestimated is to en-rol for shorter courses.

Consider debt counsellingbefore you land in troubleIf you have emerged from the festive seasondepressed by your debt situation, make ityour2013’sresolutiontotakecontrolofyourfinances again, says Mmadikwa Phoshoko, debt counsellor at Legal & Tax.

Phoshoko says that over-indebted con-sumers have a range of options for findingtheir way of out of a tight financial cornerwithout having goods repossessed or get-ting blacklisted by a credit bureau.

As a start, you can ask your creditors –the people who loaned you money – tochange your repayment terms to ones thatyou are better able to match each month. But if that option will not work, you couldlook at entering the debt counsellingprocess, says Phoshoko.

This is a legal process where you applyto have your debt restructured so that youcanpayhouseholdexpensesandstillbeableto pay off debt at a reduced instalment atthe end of the month. “Don’t think of debtcounselling as an easy way out though – itis a process that demands commitment andsacrifice from you. But it can be the freshstart you need if you have become overbur-dened by debt.”

You can enter the debt counsellingprocess by approaching a counsellor who isregistered with the National Credit Regula-tor (NCR). If youareunsurewho touse, con-tact the NCR to check for a debt counsellorin your area.

The debt counsellor will take care of yourdebt restructuring process for you, which

will culminatewith seekingaconsent orderfor new payment agreements in court. Theconsent order insures that your creditorsstick to the new repayment arrangementand may not take legal action against you, says Phoshoko.

As there is no guarantee that your credi-tors will agree to the proposals made onyour behalf by the counsellor, an applica-tion will have to be made to a court to possi-bly force your creditors to accept less thanwhat they want in line with your financialcircumstances.

If some of your creditors have taken legalaction for late or non-payment of your ac-counts, those debts cannot be included un-der the debt counselling processes. “If youare in trouble with debt, you should applyfor debt counselling before it is too late.”

Phoshoko also says that before you enterthe debt counselling process, you shouldconsider the following:

) Debt counselling involves reducingyour monthly payments on your debts, therefore it will take longer for you to settlethe amount you owe and you will pay moreinterest.

) Debt counselling has a fee attached toit.

) Under debt counselling, you areunableto get more credit and you cannot make fur-ther use of your credit facilities.

If there is no other way out of your finan-cial difficulties, consider debt counsellingas your road to a better, debt-free life.

Attributes of successfulstudentsIn tertiary study, the responsibility for studentsuccess moves from the institution to the stu-dent, who will need to start cultivating the fol-lowing characteristics to achieve success intheir studies and beyond:

) AttitudeAn individual’s attitude tends to be a com-

mon measure determining whether they willsucceed in anything that they do. A studentwith a positive attitude possesses the abilityand willingness to learn new subjects even ifsomeof themarenot interesting. Theyare ableto realise the importance of the entirety of thesubject towards the overall success in thecourse and does not give up easily. A studentwith a positive attitude will also take advan-tage of all the institutional support provided.A successful student is goal-oriented and be-lieves that he/she can and will succeed.

) Academic skillsA student cannot succeed if he does not pos-

sess the skills to deal with academic work atuniversityorcollege level. Studieshaveshownthat acquiring the academic skills needed con-tributes enormously to success – more so thansimple measures of innate ability. At collegelevel, students are expected to study independ-ently most of the time. Without the ability toreadcomprehensively, write effectively, speakfluently, and to communicate clearly, chancesof success are reduced.

) Interpersonal skillsMuch as college or university studies de-

mand an amount of independent work, a suc-cessful student is also a student with positiveinter-personal skills. This increases the stu-dent’s ability to interact with other students, make friends andbeanactivememberof studygroups. It also enables the student to seek outand use help when it is most needed and there-fore feeds positive attitude and the develop-

ment of academic skills.) Self-motivation and self-disciplineAt university level, students are expected to

work more independently and with much lessdirection from lecturers than at high school.More so if they study online. This requires alot of self-motivation during those times whenthe lecturer is not there. Much self-disciplinegoes into the completion of assignments ontime, researchanddoingother academicactiv-ities. A student whose goal is to succeed is ableto stick to this kind of discipline.

) Good time-management skillsSuccessful students learn how to manage

their time. This goes together with self-disci-pline. Being able to manage time, the studentis able to prepare for various academic activi-ties, includingpreparation for tests andexami-nations. The student is able to communicateeffectively with lecturers due to the ability toprepare ahead of time and stick to appoint-ments.

) PerceptivenessStudent perceptiveness starts with the selec-

tionofacareerandgoing tocollegeoruniversi-ty to pursue it. This means that the student isaccurately able to interpret her ambition andthen seek the right route to achieving it. Onamoremicro level, a studentwhocan interpretand perceive meanings from the curriculumandgeneralconversationsisbetterabletomas-ter material and structure arguments. A goodstudent almost always perceives right mean-ing fromconversations, butanaveragestudentoften misunderstands the original thoughts, ending up with wrong conclusions. This at-tribute is perhaps the hardest to develop as itrelies on more than acquired habits. One thingthat a student could do to build this ability isto deliberately invite feedback from others onmeanings and conclusions being reached.

Successful students have various attributes that helps them being the best students they possibly can be.PHOTO: SUPPLIED
