Plato calls for return of commandosystem to protect farmsCAROL A PUHL-SNYMAN
Provincial minister for communi-ty safety, Dan Plato, addressed agathering of farm and neighbour-hood watch members in the Stel-lenbosch area at Skilpadvlei Farmon the Polkadraai Road recently.
It was attended by about 60 peoplefromvariousStellenboschandnearbycommunities, from Kayamandi toKuils River. The occasionwas the annual gener-
al meeting of the Polkadraai FarmWatch (PFW), which completed itsfirstyear. It isnowofficiallyconstitut-ed to work together with police to ad-dress the rising number of crime inci-dents on the farms.
“We realised that to prevent crimewe have to think wider than just thePolkadraaiarea,” saidPFWchairmanErnie van derMerwe. “That’s whyweare reaching out to every communityaround us.”Willie Joubert, who hosted the
meeting on his farm Skilpadvlei, hasoffered his experience in organisingcitizengroupsonfarmsforself-protec-tion.Plato agreed, “Safety is everyone’s
responsibility, the police cannot do italone”.He said that we cannot accept the
current crime situation in SouthAfri-caasnormal. “Afarmwatchisamajordeterrent, with about 30% effective-ness.”He suggested bringing back com-
mandos. “The apartheid system islong gone,” he said, “and commandoscan lengthen the arm of the police.”Also, he favours bringing back the ca-det system, to instil discipline in ouryouth and give them something bene-ficial to do.In question time, members brought
up several issues including technolo-gy, specifically night-vision cameras. His reply was positive.Brigadier Mene of the Stellenbosch
police told the group about the settingup of the new national database ofknown criminals. “It will help ourwork greatly.”Plato affirmed the work of the PFW
and said that the Polkadraai effortscanserveasamodel for otherorganis-ing communities.

Notice of Applications of Fruit Fly Bait 2014-2015Notice is hereby given that between four and six aerial applications of Fruit Fly Bait, GF-120 (RegNo. L7331, Act 36 of 1947), will take place between October 2014 and April 2015 in theElgin/Grabouw/Villiersdorp/Vyeboom, Hex River Valley, Ceres, Wolseley, Langkloof, OrangeRiver, Robertson and Franschhoek/Simondium production areas. These applications are part ofthe Deciduous Fruit Industry’s area wide action regarding the control of fruit flies in the abovementioned areas.
BACKGROUND INFORMATIONFruit flies are a phytosanitary pest which leads to millions of rands direct damage every year andcan cause trade restrictions to certain export markets. All available methods for controlmeasures are presently being used to fight this pest. Production areas close to residential areasare being hit the hardest by fruit flies because of insufficient controlmeasures in these areas.
The control measures that are being used at present may include the following:1. Monitoring of fruit fly numbers with traps containing either a pheromone or a controlled
release vapour attractant system.2. Sanitation in orchards and vineyards where fruit flies can hatch, hide or find shelter and
food to live on.3. Regularly applying fruit fly bait in orchards and vineyards.4. Releasing sterile males on a weekly basis.
GF-120 Fruit Fly Bait is registered for both ground and aerial applications in South Africa andother countries. All the ingredients are natural and GF-120 is used internationally as a very lowrisk product, which is organically certified byOMRI.
The main ingredients in GF-120 include the following:Plant protein and sugar formulation, with spinosad as the active ingredient. Spinosad is obtainedfroma fermenting process of Saccharopolyspora spinosa which is a natural ground organism.
When this product is used according to the recommendation, only 0.24g of the active ingredientwill be spread over a hectare in scattered droplets. If applied as prescribed, there will be minimalrisk for animals, human health, birds and any other organisms in the environment, as it will onlyattract and kill fruit flies.
MORE FEATURES:Colour - light brown to brownModerately stickyNot corrosive or irritatingSoluble in water and washes off easilyNot prone to staining.
Despite above mentioned features of GF120, residents are requested to adhere to thefollowing:
1. All children should be indoors at time of application.2. Seek shelter at time of application.3. Do not hang out any washing during this period.4. Where possible, vehicles should be under roof (if any drops fall on a vehicle one caneasily wash it off with water without leaving any stains).
GF-120 is certified for use by organic farmers

Stroke is a killerThis Stroke Awareness Weekthe Heart and Stroke Founda-tion SA is joining forceswith theWorldStrokeOrganisation in itsglobal campaign I am woman, stroke affects me to raise aware-ness about stroke, which is thesecond biggest killer of womenin South Africa.Stroke Awareness Week runs
from 28 October to 3 November.) A stroke is also known as a
“brain attack” and can injurethe brain like a heart attack caninjure the heart. It happens when the blood
supply to part of the brain isinterrupted. When that happens, part of the
brain doesn’t get the blood andoxygen it needs, causing damageand results in the person experi-encing the symptoms of stroke.“Women aremore likely to die
when suffering a stroke thanmen. In fact, every year 4 000more South African women diebecause of a stroke thanmenandour unhealthy lifestyles arelargely to blame,” says Dr VashMungal-Singh, CEO of the Heart
and Stroke Foundation SA.) When asked why more
South African women are dyingof strokes thanmen, this is whatProfessor Alan Bryer, head ofthe Division of Neurology and oftheStrokeUnit atGrooteSchuurHospital and the University ofCape Town had to say:“Women share the traditional
risk factors for sufferingastrokewith men. However, more wom-en than men suffer from mi-graineswithaura, atrial fibrilla-tion, depression, emotionalstress, metabolic syndrome andobesity.“These factors increase the
risk of a stroke. In addition, there are gender-specific riskfactors that can further explainthe higher incidence of strokesin women.“These include high blood
pressure during pregnancy, hor-mone replacement therapy andcontraceptives. Lastly, smokinginteracts with these gender-spe-cific risk factors tomakewomenmore susceptible to suffering astroke.”

Always have a Plan BWhen you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
In Luke 14, Jesus said: “For which of you in-tending to build a tower, does not sitdownfirstandcount thecost,wheth-erhehasenoughtofinishitlest,afterhe has laid the foundation and is notable to finish, all who see it begin tomock him, saying, ‘This man beganto build and was not able to finish.’ ”
Sometimes you have a plan ofwhat you would like to do andachieve with your business. Butthen things just do not work out theway you planned and you end up ina situation, like the one mentionedabove and you need to deal with it.
Remember: a smooth sea never made a skilledsailor. Therefore, it is wise to have a Plan B. Weneedtohaveaplanofactionforthoseunplannedcrisis situations.
There are some ways to steer your businessthrough those white water times.
) Seize the opportunitySee the difficult situation as an opportunity
for change, an opportunity to be creative. Do notignore the crisis in the hope that it will disap-pear. It is unavoidable to have a crisis from timeto time, but seize it as an opportunity.
) Act swiftlyWhen something does not go according to
plan, the sooner you act the less damage iscaused. If you wait too long it can de-stroy your business or its reputation.
) Collective wisdomWhen an unplanned event threat-
ens your business, do not withdrawyourself and think you are the onlyone who can solve it. Discuss it withpeopleworkinginyourorganisation, for there is safety in a multitude ofcounsellors, according to Proverbs15:22.
) Be willing to sacrifice firstBefore you can expect others to
makesacrificesduringdifficulttimes, youastheleader must be willing to do so first. Everybodyis looking for guidance and at what the leaderwill do.
Leadership isnotdeterminedbyhowyouleadwhen everything goes well, it is determinedwhen you hit the rough patches. Therefore PlanB is vitally important.

Enter the ACVV Fun RunThe first Franschhoek ACVV Fun Runwill take place on 8 November. The run is as much a fundraiser as it
is a marketing tool for a charity that doesstellar work in the valley, but probablyreceives less exposure than it deserves. In short, the members of the ACVV (Af-
rikaans Christian Women’s Association)are the valley’s social workers and alsomanage Franschhoek’s highly-regardedFleur de Lis home for the aged. The ACVV called in the help of former
Springbok runners, Danie andBevMalanof Sotheby’s Realty Franschhoek, to helporganise the event. There will be a 5 km and 10 km walk or
run.
Both events will start at the HuguenotMonument. The 10 km starts at 08:00 and the 5 km
at 08:30.Entries can be made at the church of-
fice, at the Franschhoek Village Marketor Sotheby’s.You can also contact Janita Eigelaar

R20 for the 5 km.The ACVV Fun Run will also provide
a boost to the Franschhoek AthleticsClub, which doesn’t currently have anyevents on the official athletics calendar.
Franschhoek and Mbekweni forge soccer bondThe under 9 Bridge House school soccerteam recently played a historic matchagainst a soccer team from Mbekweni,Paarl which set inmotion a drive to kit outthe Mbekweni players.
The level of soccer and spirits were high de-spite the fact that most of the Mbekweni boysplayed with no soccer boots or shared boots, with one boy wearing a left shoe and anotherboywearing a right shoe. They also had to holdup their shorts with one hand as most of themwere wearing adult-sized shorts and T-shirts.AgroupofparentsfromBridgeHousedecided
to do something about this and started a drive
at school to collect secondhand soccer boots.StuartDownieandLeighCourtnagefromPnP
Franschhoekdecidedtosponsorafull soccerkitfor each boy. After a month a date was set forarematchandtohandoverthenewkitandbootsto the Mbekweni boys.Therewasmuch joyonboth sides (even some
tearsof joy!)whentheMbekweniboyssawtheirnew soccer outfits and rushed off to put themon and then play with the Bridge House soccerteam.Afterwards, over a boerie-roll braai, plans
were made to regularly get the Mbekweni andBridge House boys together to enjoy the love ofsoccer.
Goalaheadsaystheboys.
