ART & CULTURE

Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s 2013 Family Performance Series Shakes Up the Stage With New Acts

The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood’s Family Performance Series returns to the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center on Jan. 12 with a theater schedule featuring new acts in improv, puppetry, contemporary dance, and classical music. Targeted to youth ages 4 to 12 years old, these free shows include an interactive, educational component involving children and the artists.

The series is staged monthly at 2 p.m. on Saturdays from January through May 2013 at the 500-seat theater, located at 1770 Monroe St., Hollywood.

The Lake Worth-based comedy improv troupe Actors With a Clue kicks off the series on Jan. 12 with a debut performance of “Hooray for Holly-Weird,” an uproarious murder mystery that spoofs Hollywood stars. The show is performed in an interactive who-done-it format, keeping the whole family on the edge of their seats as the story unfolds. As an added delight, it is up to the audience to help solve the mysterious murder.

In addition to rollicking improv, the theater welcomes on Feb. 2 South Florida’s the Puppet Network Presenting: “Dog,” a tale, co-created by renowned artist Pablo Cano and puppet maestro Jim Hammond. Told through the art of shadow puppets, this story follows a heroine who wanders through modern art in pursuit of her beloved, squeaky red ball.

Also new to the series is Tampa’s vibrant dance collective Moving Current. Sliding into town on March 23, this troupe will interact with the audience and ask attendees for choreography direction, creating a truly unique and engaging experience. A discussion with Artistic Director Cynthia Hennessy will follow the show.

On April 6, Florida Youth Orchestra (FYO) is back with a classical music showcase from the Children’s Concert Series featuring a talented cast of youth ages 5 to 18 whose whimsical performance will enchant children of all ages. In FYO’s “Play Pen,” audience members will enjoy playing instruments after the show.

For one afternoon only on May 18, Just the Funny Improvisation Troupe will give a hilarious performance in which the actors will take suggestions from the audience to create original routines. This interactive family-friendly comedy act is sure to delight all ages.

The Family Performance Series helps children build essential learning skills in cultural studies, history, language arts, math, and science. This series is the only high-quality theatrical performance of its kind geared to families in southeast Broward County.

The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood presents contemporary gallery exhibitions, live stage performances and high-quality education programs for adults and children. The Center fosters a creative environment where new and challenging work can flourish through programs that reflect the highest standards of artistry and diversity.

Art and Culture Center to bring prominent artists to Broward

The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood will foster conversation around the visual arts by bringing in internationally-recognized artists for its Hot Topics Artist Series, thanks to a new $20,000 Knight Arts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Center is one of five Broward/Palm Beach County Knight Arts Challenge winners out of more than 1,000 applicants, and the only Broward organization receiving this prestigious award for the second time.

The project builds upon the Center’s previous Knight Arts Challenge grant awarded in 2010 that funded speakers in the popular Hot Topics Discussion Series. The first series held during the 2011-12 gallery exhibition season featured influential writers and curators, such as three-time Pulitzer-Prize nominated critic Jerry Saltz.

The 2012 Knight award will fund four lectures by dynamic contemporary artists at the Center’s main gallery facility. The Center’s Curator of Exhibitions Jane Hart is currently identifying prospective contemporary artist speakers, such as Andrea Zittel, Lyle Ashton Harris, and Dave Muller, and will announce the schedule in the coming months. Audiences will learn about each artist’s work and how they influence the visual arts in the United States.

“The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is delighted and honored to receive this prestigious award from the Knight Foundation for the second time,” said Center Executive Director Joy Satterlee. “We look forward to bringing prominent artists to South Florida to discuss trends influencing contemporary art in the United States.”

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge is a five-year, $40 million initiative to bring South Florida together through the arts.

After years of discord between the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center and the City of Hollywood, the center is pulling up stakes and relocating to Dania Beach.

The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center, which moved into its current location in Downtown Hollywood in April 2007, is expected to close in February on the purchase of the 25,000-square-foot, $2.2 million Dania Beach building at 303 N. Federal Hwy. The center hopes to complete construction in time to relocate to its new home by Labor Day in September 2013 and open to the public at the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days a few weeks later.

The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center purchased its current site, a 15,000-square-foot, three-story building at 2031 Harrison St., from Hollywood for $1.2 million in Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) funding in August 2004. As part of a 15-year agreement, the center was to start repaying the loan at approximately $16,000 a month in principal and interest after the first three years, but no payments were ever made.

Holocaust Documentation and Education Center leaders have maintained that a $3 million investment in necessary repairs to the building has prevented them from making good on the loan repayment. Shortly after moving in, the center had to replace the building’s elevator, façade, windows and roof, and the second story was later condemned. With structural

defects and code violations that include exposed sprinkler lines, the center was never able to open its planned museum to the public and generate income.

The CRA gave the center a $50,000 grant for roof repairs in 2005 and two years later forgave a $500,000 loan for renovations and extended the start of the loan repayment by an additional three years, to October 2010, In September 2011, Hollywood city commissioners declared the center in default, forcing it to begin making the monthly loan payments. In November 2011, the center was given an additional 90 days to pay or face foreclosure. The city foreclosed on the property on behalf of the CRA last February.

The new space in Dania Beach will accommodate the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center’s collection of more than 7,000 artifacts that include yellow stars, a concentration camp uniform, infant clothing made at Auschwitz and a Holocaust rail car from Poland. The center also house a library, display photographs and documents, and exhibit videos and manuscripts of 2,400 oral histories of eyewitnesses to the Holocaust. The Holocaust Documentation and Education Center was created to preserve the authentic memory of the Nazi genocide by recording the testimonies of survivors, liberators and rescuers.

The center was founded 32 years ago as the Southeast Florida Holocaust Memorial Center and first opened its doors on Florida International University’s north campus.

Downtown Hollywood’s standing as a cultural hub will be further strengthened by the addition of Cinema Paradiso – Hollywood, an art-house cinema that soon will provide quality film programming and cultural events on a year-round basis.

Currently the only art-house cinema in Broward County, Fort Lauderdale-based Cinema Paradiso had been considering expanding its operations to Hollywood for about three years. The Broward County Film Society, also known as the Fort

Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) and the organization behind the non-profit arts venue, recently executed a 10-year lease in partnership with the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) to operate Cinema Paradiso – Hollywood at a large vacant storefront at 2008 Hollywood Blvd.

Founded in 1998, Cinema Paradiso has made its home on Southeast Sixth Street in downtown Fort Lauderdale, where it endeavors to heighten awareness of film as a narrative art through year-round screenings of independent and foreign films, documentaries and retro movies, as well as educational seminars,

works-in-progress and special events. Supporters of Cinema Paradiso –

Hollywood say it is an ideal addition to the historic downtown arts, music and entertainment district, which features an eclectic mix of restaurants and cafés, art galleries, unique boutiques, specialty shops and live music venues in a pedestrian-friendly village environment. A designated Live Music District, Downtown Hollywood is home to the “Mural Project” (DHMP), the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and the 10-acre ArtsPark at Young Circle.

CRA officials say Cinema Paradiso – Hollywood will foster economic

development in the CRA area.“We look forward to Cinema Paradiso

– Hollywood serving the residents of Hollywood and attracting the visitor market from the beach,” said Jorge Camejo, executive director of the CRA. “It will also significantly enhance existing business activities, as well as the business recruitment, retention and expansion efforts in Downtown Hollywood.”

On Jan. 9, Hollywood city officials sitting as the CRA Board will consider an agreement with the Broward County Film Society in which the CRA would purchase up to $30,000 worth of Cinema Paradiso – Hollywood movie and event tickets per year for a 10-year period, to be distributed by the CRA Beach District Office of Tourism to the beach visitor market for promotional purposes.

Playing an important role in Cinema Paradiso’s decision to open a location in Downtown Hollywood was local attorney Alan Koslow, a shareholder in the Hollywood-based law firm Becker & Poliakoff, P.A., in the firm’s Local Government Law & Lobbying Group, who leads the firm’s Entertainment, Gaming & Hospitality Law practice.

Koslow was recently elected to serve as chairman of the board of directors of the Broward County Film Society for 2013-14.

“One of my goals upon assuming the chairmanship is to immediately launch a capital campaign involving local governments, the business community and residents—all who recognize the value FLIFF and its expanding cinema operations bring to Downtown Hollywood,” Koslow said.

FLIFF president and CEO Gregory von Hausch added, “Having Alan on board as our incoming chair not only allows FLIFF to expand into Hollywood in a big way, but will give us the much-needed shot in the arm to raise the necessary donations, sponsorships and memberships to guarantee Cinema Paradiso – Hollywood’s success in the rapidly developing downtown.”

Cinema Paradiso and FLIFF’s impact on the Fort Lauderdale cultural and economic landscape is widely recognized. Since its founding in 1986, the Broward County Film Society has introduced independent cinema to a South Florida audience base of more than 4.5 million people. The Broward County Film Society produces the annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, recognized as the highest-rated film festival in Florida by the Florida Arts Council and one of the five major cultural institutions in Broward County by the Broward Cultural Council.

Cinema Paradiso – Hollywood is expected to be operational by the end of March and will offer quality programming six days a week.

Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute at Memorial Regional Hospital has maintained a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) for five consecutive analysis periods between July 2009 and June 2012. In addition, Memorial achieved a three-star rating for Aortic Valve Replacement for the analysis periods during July 2009 to June 2012.

This recognition places Memorial’s cardiac program in the top 6 percent in the nation for aortic valve replacement and in the top 14 percent in the nation for CABG.

City of Hollywood needs Baby Boomers The City of Hollywood has received a

$5,000 planning grant from the Community Foundation of Broward to create a volunteer program specifically targeted at engaging the city’s baby boomer population in city service. The goal of the planning effort is to create a specialized team of newly retired volunteers that will form the Hollywood Boomers Experience and Skills Team (BEST).

The city will use the grant to conduct outreach and survey the newly retired baby boomers residing in Hollywood to find out what volunteer opportunities would be most likely to interest them and engage them in city service. A BEST committee is already being formed and will begin meeting soon to undertake planning efforts.

Currently, the City of Hollywood has an active volunteer program, called Volunteer Hollywood that promotes, organizes and oversees between 1,500 and 2,000 volunteers each year. Only 4% of those volunteers currently fall within the baby boomer age range (typically identified as individuals born just after WWII and into the early 1960’s).

By offering this grant opportunity, the Community Foundation is assisting Hollywood in developing a specific volunteer program tailored to the unique skills and abilities the boomer population has to offer.

If you would like to get involved in the planning efforts, please contact Volunteer Hollywood at 954.921.3020.

National PR Agency returns to Downtown Hollywood

DOWNTOWN & BEACH BUSINESS

Downtown Hollywood has undergone significant changes since Fish Consulting, LLC first opened its doors in 2004. Eight years later, the successful public relations and marketing agency found the perfect fit in the growing arts, music and entertainment district, prompting its recent relocation back to the neighborhood it originally called home.

Lorne Fisher, the CEO/Managing Partner of Fish Consulting, LLC, opened his own agency on 21st Avenue in Downtown Hollywood in October 2004 after serving as the Director of PR & Events for The Absolut Spirits Company. Fisher also previously worked for Ketchum, a global public relations agency, where he served clients that included Kodak, Maxwell House, Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, Levi’s and Nike.

Under Fisher’s leadership over the past eight years, Fish Consulting has grown into a national communications consulting firm focused on creating public relations and

marketing strategies for clients that include such notable brands such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Baskin Robbins, Massage Envy, Smoothie King and Jiffy Lube, as well as several emerging companies. Fisher has received numerous awards from national and local public relations organizations, including five Silver Anvils, the industry’s most prestigious honor from the Public Relations Society of America.

“Fish has grown significantly over the past several years,” Fisher said. “We needed a larger space, and it was a great building.”

The new office space is inside the historic SunTrust Bank building, which was built in 1924 and is located at 2001 Hollywood Boulevard in the heart of Downtown Hollywood. Leasing agent Robin Robins represented the building owner, Hollywood-based FIRM Realty.

Fisher, a Montreal native who moved to Hollywood as a child in 1976, said Downtown

Hollywood offers the Fish Consulting team much more than just a place to work. The historic arts, music and entertainment district is an ideal location for creative professionals who seek conveniently located office space in a pedestrian-friendly village environment. Featuring an eclectic mix of restaurants and cafes, unique boutiques, art galleries, specialty shops and live music venues, Downtown Hollywood is a designated Live Music District and also home to the “Mural Project”

(DHMP), the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and the 10-acre ArtsPark at Young Circle.

Bistro Bon Marché serves up french fusion cuisine and yoga on Hollywood BeachThe site of a former Hollywood Beach

institution has been reborn as Bistro Bon Marché, a unique eatery at 3111 N. Surf Road whose healthy French fusion cuisine and attentive service have been getting rave reviews from customers since its opening Dec. 1.

Owner Marco Proulx said his new restaurant, the former home of Ocean’s Eleven, has been full almost every day, thanks to word-of-mouth publicity.

“The response is amazing,” Proulx said. “We’re going to have to start taking reservations soon.”

Proulx expects interest in Bistro Bon Marché to only increase after the first of the year, when yoga classes will be offered at 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. daily on the restaurant’s patio.

The unique concept that combines French fusion cooking using mostly organic ingredients and al fresco yoga offerings came about as “a vision I had of what we need to offer, to bring to the beach,” said Proulx, a yoga enthusiast for more than 10 years. “Almost everybody has a burger joint.”

Proulx signed the lease with property owner Hollywood Towers in November. The restaurant space subsequently underwent a dramatic transformation, with sleek white leather sofas catching the eye of passersby even before the bistro opened.

But the true star of Bistro Bon Marché is the French fusion cuisine created by Executive Chef Chris Smith, whose culinary background includes the Illusions luxury chartered yacht and Hyatt Hotels.

“People can’t believe the food that comes out of that kitchen,” Proulx said.

Menu selections include Eggs Benedict, orange French toast, key lime waffles, breakfast sandwiches, yogurt

parfaits, and sweet or savory crepes. Bistro Bon Marché also serves frozen smoothies, specialty coffees, mimosas in the morning, and wine at lunch and dinner.

Outstanding customer service is also a priority at Bistro Bon Marché, where French-speaking staff are available to accommodate French Canadian patrons. Proulx relocated to South Florida from Montreal two and a half years ago after vacationing in the area. Proulx said he’s familiar with the beaches from South Beach to Boca Raton, and Hollywood has the best beach around.

“There’s nothing like this,” said Proulx, a Hollywood Beach resident. “The beach is clean and you’ve got a nice Broadwalk. You don’t see this anywhere else.”

Bistro Bon Marché opens daily at 7 a.m. serving coffee and cold breakfast items, with full food service beginning at 8 a.m. Bistro Bon Marché is located at 3111 N. Surf Road, at the north end of Hollywood Beach at Scott Street. For more information, call 954-842-2389 or visit www.bistrobonmarche.com.

For more information on Hollywood Beach businesses or events, call the City of Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) at 954-924-2980 or visit www.hollywoodcra.org.

Under Florida Law (Chapter 163, Part III), local governments are able to designate areas as Community Redevelopment Areas when certain conditions exist. The Downtown District of the Hollywood, Florida CRA, created in 1979, is approximate 580 acres. The Beach District of the Hollywood, Florida CRA, created in 1997, consists of 293 acres.

Nothing says “happy holidays” like an ugly Christmas sweater. On December 20th folks flaunted the ugliest festive frocks they can find to celebrate the holidays at Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub in Hollywood. The party included an open bar, live music, and prizes for the ugliest Christmas sweater.

Admission for this festive evening was a $10 donation to Gilda’s Club South Florida at the door. All proceeds support Gilda’s Club South Florida programs for men, women, and children touched by cancer.

“We’re so thankful for our partnership with Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub. It’s these community partnerships that enable us to keep our support programs and workshops available to our members free of charge,” shared Shelley Goren, Gilda’s Club South Florida CEO.

“Supporting charities, such as Gilda’s

Club, has always been really important to me, especially during the holidays” said Mark Rowe, owner of Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub. “It was great to provide an opportunity where people can celebrate the season and also give back to others.”

For more information, contact Elisabeth Glynn at 954-763-6776 or [email protected]. Mickey Byrne’s Irish Pub is located at 1921 Hollywood Boulevard, Hollywood, FL 33020.

Page 27: Jan 2013 Hollywood Gazette

2012 was a banner year for Hollywood in many different ways that ultimately benefit residents and chamber members alike.

A number of renowned educational institutions came to Hollywood in the last 12 months, including the Oceanography Center at Nova Southeastern University; this world-class research institution is a leader in marine biological research with an emphasis on coral reef science and shark conservation. Barry University also opened an off-site campus in Hollywood early in 2012, becoming Hollywood’s first partnership with an institution of higher education offering traditional undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs. The university’s anesthesiology and biomedical sciences graduate programs were relocated to a 10,000 square foot space that once housed a fire station on North 21st Avenue in Hollywood. The school is already operating at full capacity and consideration for expansion is underway. In addition to Dade Medical College (which opened a location on Taft Street in 2011), City College opened in West Hollywood on Taft Street, with special laboratory classrooms developed to simulate actual working conditions for the Emergency Medical Services and Allied Health curricula. As a result of all of these educational facilities opening, hundreds of students come to Hollywood daily and that’s a

definite economic boost to our city.Tourism increased in and

around Hollywood during 2012, as evidenced by elevated bed occupancy rates and decreased vacancies. Hollywood/Fort Lauderdale International Airport experienced an increase in flights and initiated a runway expansion project, as well, and the number of visitors who booked cruises and subsequently spent time in Hollywood pre- and post-cruise also increased, due in great part to the Royal Caribbean shuttle service. Tourists and residents alike are adding to an increased ridership aboard the Hollywood Trolley. Weekly musical events at Hollywood’s ArtsPark drew record crowds this past year and served as a beacon to Downtown Hollywood. Once visitors were downtown, they couldn’t help but visit our local

restaurants and shops, which provided a much-needed economic boost during 2012. Thanks to chamber members Ambit Advertising and Public Relations and Matrix2 Advertising, a comprehensive, international tourism campaign is underway and the Channel 10 weather camera promotes beautiful Hollywood Beach each and every day.

Improvements made by the Beach CRA streetscape plan continued to make Hollywood Beach even more beautiful during 2012. Brick pavers, buried utility lines and landscaping helped to make the streets between A1A and the Broadwalk more aesthetically appealing and these efforts are still continuing. The Department of Transportation also worked to help beautify State Road 7 and entered the third phase of this project last

year. In 2012, talks were initiated to bring Walmart to the site of the current Millennium Mall. A number of new restaurants opened in Hollywood, too, including Face, La Vendetta and Bistro Bon Marche. And, an announcement was made that Cinema Paradiso will relocate to Hollywood Boulevard in 2013.

With so much happening in Hollywood during 2012, it’s important to note that the newly elected city commission boasts numerous friendly faces. Commissioner Peter Hernandez is a past president of the chamber, as is Patty Asseff, and both Dick Blattner and Kevin Biederman are former chamber board members. This friendship and support on the city commission level will be instrumental in helping the chamber’s governmental affairs committee execute a business development agenda aimed at recruiting, retaining and expanding business for Hollywood.

All in all, 2012 was a memorable year for Hollywood’s residents and business community and all signs are pointing to 2013 being even better. Happy New Year!
