STAINED AND PAINTED GLASS: CATALOGUE 16

Introduction: This catalogue is our first specialist list on aspects of stained and painted glass. It includes material on making glass, commentaries on glass in situ,

including a selection of out of print volumes from Corpus Vitrearum, monographs on individual makers and a small group of items which comprise original designs for glass. It is designed to appeal to those who have a general interest in the subject alongside those with specific interests in periods or individual artists.

We would particularly draw your attention to Christopher Whall’s rare promotional booklet for his own firm which has original photographs of

items he made,(no 31 ) and other trade catalogues, the massive colour illustrated portfolio Vorbildliche Glasmalereien aus dem späten Mittelalter und der Renaissancezeit which records glass in pre First World War Germany (no 99), the original heraldic designs recorded by F C Eden at Aveley Belhus. (no 187) and the substantial collection of original material from Hardman’s in Birmingham when the company was under the jurisdiction of Patrick Feeney and Donald Taunton. (no 188 ) [Cover design from the collection S268]

We have not included Journals in the list but have a large stock of the major academic publication of the Society of Glass Painters and other

journals and welcome any enquiries on this subject. Furthermore, there are many small pamphlets which provide valuable insights into the windows in churches all over Great Britain and beyond. If you seek information on the glass in a particular building please contact us.

Die Kirchen Leipzig Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften und Edition Leipzig 2003 255 pp, 35 b/w in-text illustrations and 36 colour plates. 8vo. Decorated wrappers. Fine condition. Unlike medieval stained glass, the stained glass dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries in German churches has either fallen victim to the second world war or the restorations undertaken in the 50s and 60s. This comprehensive work is based on the research of the Arbeitsstelle für Glasmalereiforschung des Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi, Potsdam (Office for the study of stained glass of the CVMA in Potsdam). Angela Klauke and Frank Martin present an inventory of stained glass dated between 1800 and 1914 extant in 312 individual churches throughout the Berlin-Brandenburg region. They describe the images and iconography as well as the present state of the glass and they name, if known, the commissioner, artist and studio. Hardman’s when part of the archive was destroyed and other parts smoke damaged. Nonetheless, this collection is exceptionally valuable in showing the stylist traditions of the firm after 1914 which can be observed to span traditional forms and modernist ideas. The names of two designs frequently occur on the designs, notably, Patrick Feeney (1910–1996) and Donald Taunton (1885–1965) both who were both chief designers for the firm. Each item has been briefly listed and described under the headings glass, mosaics and miscellaneous items. To aid ease of future cataloguing, the size, location and condition are noted for all items and we have generated a reference number for each item linking our listing to the actual items. The list is available to prospective purchasers. £8,500.00 This collection of material exclusively dates with the 20th century work of the firm when it was under the direction of Donald Taunton and Patrick Feeney respectively when Hardman’s had premises at 26 Frederick Street in The Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham, Newhall Hill and Lightwoods House. The fire which destroyed part of the archive and caused smoke damage to part of this collection was at Newhall Hill was in 1970. The firm ceased trading in 2008. Ref. FISHER, Michael, Hardman of Birmingham, Goldsmith and Glass painter, Landmark, 2008. Provenance: Purchased directly from the final owners of Hardman’s, Knowle, Solihull.Hardman and Co., was founded in 1838 and became exceptionally well known for its glass and ecclesiastical metalwork encouraged by A W N Pugin who commissioned the firm to make metalwork and glass for St Chads, Birmingham, Lichfield and other of his commissions, the most famous of which was for the Houses of Parliament, the interiors of which were installed to designs of Pugin. The firm carried out major commissions all through the period of the gothic revival making work for the new Commissioner’s Churches and other mainly Roman Catholic churches erected in industrial towns all through the 19th century. Much of the work is in the West Midlands within striking distance of their workshops and offices in Birmingham but they worked worldwide, a tradition which continued until the firm was wound up. There are examples from Melbourne, Australia, Newcastle, Natal and Toronto, Canada in this collection, to name but a few international locations. . 190. (MARTIN AND THOMAS) Original vidimus for a window. Single light with standing figures. Location not given. Swansea 1938. Original pen and ink drawing, 200x410mm, initialed by Hubert Thomas (1913-1995) ‘38. Inscription reads “And thou child shalt be called the prophet of the highest”. [Luke 1:76] [Ref: 16868] £120 Hubert Thomas was a cousin of Howard Martin, and together they founded the stained glass firm Celtic Studios in Swansea after the Second World War. Hubert Thomas trained at Swansea School of Art, where he made the first ever stained glass panel at the School, and subsequently worked with Howard Martin until the outbreak of the war. It must have been at this period when this design was produced. After a spell working for James Hogan at Powell & Sons in London, Hubert Thomas returned to Swansea to become studio director and 'Chief Craftsman' for Celtic Studios in 1948, and continued to run the firm until 1992.
