PrologueHi, my name is Janette Lim and I am in grade5. This year we are learning about migration.

This year the grade 5s have been talking totheir parents how they left their country andwhy.

There are a lot of different reasons why people leave awayfrom their country and come to Australia. In 5M there is 14people that have left Australia for peace, 2 people have leftfor a better environment, 6 people have left for a better job

and education, three people have left for a better lifestyleand two have left for family. From all this information thegrade 5s have decided to make a migration book but beforewe thought of making this book our Vietnamese translatortold us all about his migration story from Vietnam toAustralia.

My mum left Vietnam for a better Job andEducation.

We have done a lot of organizing andplanning before we get up to the publishing.We have done a fact file and a Venn diagram about ourcountries.

I have really like learning about migration and now this bookis going to start about my parents migrating to Australia.

Life in Vietnam

Mum lived in Vietnam in Saigon.

She lived with my great grandmother(Tai ma), great grandfather (Tai

Gong), grandmother (PoaPoa), grandfather (Gong Gong) andthe whole family. My mother workedin a sowing factorywith her friends. Every day whenmum came back she would makedinner for the whole family. Mumwould always wake up at 6 o clock todo all the chores. Before she wouldgo to work, mum would have to feed

the chickens and make breakfast. Forbreakfast she would have to maketwo full plates of food.

Getting a Phone CallOne day my grandmother got a phone call from mumssponsor asking if she wanted to go to Australia. Not longago before the phone called, Tai ma and Tai gong passedaway.

Mum and her family all wanted to go to Australia to findbetter jobs and education. Mum and her family left on the14th of November in 1984. Mum felt sad when she leftVietnam. She didnt want to leave her friends behind.

Arriving in Australia

Mum said when she first arrived in Australia she said sheknew it was very different compared to Vietnam. Mum saidher sponsor was waiting at the airport entrance for her andher whole family. Mum knew this was the perfect country forher.

Mum thought it was a much cleaner place than Vietnam.She said she did not expect what it

would be like. She said there weremore cars than motorbikes and thatthe houses were very different fromVietnams. Mum said the houseshad spiky roofs but in Vietnam theywere flat.

At first, mum and her family followed the sponsor back hometo St. Albans in Melbourne. Mum said for the first few weeksshe was struggling to communicate with people. For the firstyear mum and her family lived in her sponsors house while

trying to find a house to live in.

Meeting

DadNot long after mum found a houseto live in, she met my dad.Mum was going shopping with herfriends when suddenly she bumpedinto dad. Once mum bumped intodad, dad knew Mum was theperfect one for her.

In 1994 mum and dad got married.In 1995 they gave birth to mybrother Jackson Lim. In 1998 theygave birth to me and named me

Janette Lim. A few years later mum gave birth to my littlesister Joanne Lim.

How Mum Feels

About Australia NowMum said that she feels very lucky to live in Australia andenjoys being in here with her three children and herhusband. My sister Joanne and I go to Kings Park Primaryschool and my brother goes to Copper Field College. My dadis a butcher in Footscray and my mum takes care of us athome.
