FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners,

We have just received confirmation that Bishop DiMarzio will be joining our parish com-munity for the 11:00 am Mass on Sunday, Feb-ruary 9, 2020. He will be the principal celebrant of the liturgy, as well as the homilist. This will be his third pastoral visit to St. Raphael’s.

We hope you will save the date and join us for the occasion. As you know, in light of his age, the Bishop has submitted his res-ignation to Pope Francis, who has yet to act on it.

The 11:00 am Mass that day, which will be trilingual ( English, Spanish, Korean), is open to all. We will keep the other scheduled Masses that weekend as they are {Saturday 5 pm; Sunday 8 am, 9:45 am (Korean), 12:30 pm (Spanish)} to accommo-date those unable to be present at the 11 am.

Following the Mass, Bishop DiMarzio will meet with our Parish Pastoral Council members, trustees, Pastoral Ministers and others in leadership.

Speaking of our Bishop and our diocese, we have just ended the Annual Catho-lic Appeal 2019. Thanks to your generosity,, we surpassed, in paid-up pledges, our assigned goal by more than $8,000 and will receive back that money for our local use. The ministries of the diocese benefit from your engagement and follow-through, and so does St. Raphael’s Church. Thanks for keeping your promises.

SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND: Next weekend’s second collection will be for the CHURCHES IN NEED. These include Latin America and the Caribbean, and Central and Eastern Europe. The collection is an act of pastoral solidarity to give programmatic support to important pas-toral ministries which would otherwise lack funding in those areas. We are doing this collection on January 18/19, because our envelope company mistakenly dated the appeal that day. On the following weekend Jan. 25/26), we will do an at-doors collection for the earthquake victims in Puerto Rico.

To help the church grow in love and faithful witness to God, Pope Francis has declared the third Sunday in Ordinary Time to be dedicated to the word of God.

Salvation, faith, unity and mercy all depend on knowing Christ and sacred Scrip-ture, he said in a new document.

Devoting a special day "to the celebration, study and dissemination of the word of God" will help the church "experience anew how the risen Lord opens up for us the treasury of his word and enables us to proclaim its unfathomable riches before the world," the pope said.

The declaration to have a "Sunday of the Word of God" was made in a new document, given "motu proprio," on the pope's own initiative. Its title, "Aperuit Illis," is based on a verse from the Gospel of St. Luke, "Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures."

"The relationship between the risen Lord, the community of believers and sacred Scripture is essential to our identity as Christians," the pope said in the apostolic letter, released by the Vatican Sept. 30, the feast of St. Jerome, patron saint of biblical scholars.

(Continued from last week’s bulletin…)

This illustrates a major theme in the passage: divine providence. It had been the centurion’s decision to set sail in bad weather, and throughout the storm the sailors made decisions about how to handle the ship. But in the end their own plans are thwarted, and only by staying together and allowing the ship to be wrecked do they come to be saved through divine providence. The ship and its entire valuable cargo will be lost, but all lives will be saved, “for none of you will lose a hair from your heads.” (Acts 27: 34) In our search for Christian unity, surrendering ourselves to divine providence will demand letting go of many things to which we are deeply attached. What matters to God is the salvation of all people.

This diverse and conflicted group of people runs aground “on some island.” Having been thrown together in the same boat, they arrive at the same destination, where their human unity is disclosed in the hospitality they receive from the islanders. As they gather round the fire, sur-rounded by a people who neither know nor understand them, differences of power and status fall away. The 276 are no longer at the mercy of indifferent forces, but embraced by God’s loving providence made present through a people who show them “unusual kindness.” Cold and wet, they can warm and dry them-selves by the fire. Hungry, they are given food. They are sheltered until it is safe for them to continue their journey.

Today many people are facing the same terrors on the same seas. The very same places named in the reading also feature in the stories of modern-day migrants. In other parts of the world many others are making equally dangerous journeys by land and sea to escape natural disasters, warfare and poverty. Their lives, too, are at the mercy of immense and coldly indifferent forces – not only natural, but political, economic and human. This human indifference takes various forms: the indifference of those who sell places on unseaworthy vessels to desperate people; the indifference of the decision not to send out rescue boats; and the indifference of turning migrant ships away. This names only a few instances. As Christians together facing these crises of migration this story challenges us: do we collude with the cold forces of indif-ference, or do we show “unusual kindness” and become witnesses of God’s loving providence to all peo-ple?

Hospitality is a much needed virtue in our search for Christian unity. It is a practice that calls us to a greater generosity to those in need. The people who showed unusual kindness to Paul and his companions did not yet know Christ, and yet it is through their unusual kindness that a divided people were drawn closer to-gether. Our own Christian unity will be discovered not only through showing hospitality to one another, im-portant though this is, but also through loving encounters with those who do not share our language, cul-ture or faith. In such tempestuous journeys and chance encounters, God’s will for the Church and all peo-ple comes to fulfillment.

Hechos 28, 28).
