In my reading and studying about stewardship I read in one resource; “Money, and the things money can buy, directly competes with God for our love, affection, and service. We cannot serve both God and money.” We’ve read this before. Jesus said these words in Matthew 6:24. But another quote I read this week was “Our attitude and decisions regarding money is a barometer of our discipleship relationship with Jesus.” Last Sunday I asked the congregation to “pray for what God wants you to give to St. Philip in this year’s financial stewardship campaign.” Pray. And as you pray – consider your giving as a barometer of your relationship with Jesus. I’m praying too for you and St. Philip. My prayer is that God will be speaking to you and that out of the abundant joy that God has given, you will give your time, talents and money with overflowing generosity. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21) Greg

Dead Sea Scrolls Tour on October 16

The Presbyterian Women will be touring the

Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit at the Southwestern Seminary on

Tuesday, October 16th. Price per person is $15.

Elizabeth Dick's husband, Ron Serino, who is working toward his doctorate in Old Testament, has agreed to go with us as a guide. This is a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit.

We will carpool and leave the church at 9:30 for a tour at 10:30.

Thank you so much for the prayers, cards and support during Betty's recent illness. She is, thankfully, on the road to recovery. We are told this will be a

slow process but with the continued prayers and support of our wonderful church family a total recov-ery will be soon. Bill Murray

My heart was filled with joy on mission day. Not just because I was able to share the stories of our work in South Sudan, but because my granddaughters Jessi and Julie were able to be a part of serving outside of their church walls. Jessi collected many red hands that are being sent the United Nations in support of ending child slavery. She learned a lot while preparing her display and was so proud of the hands she collected. Julie had fun making clay crosses that will be heading back to Akobo with me and given to children there to let them know children in our church are praying for them. She also had fun serving people a sample of a traditional meal from Akobo. It was great to see our children's faces as they participated in the various activities. Thank you to all who participated for allowing my girls a chance to grow in their faith and take pride in serving God in new and different ways. Thank you all for your love and support and prayers for our mission and ministry in Akobo. May God bless you all as richly as you bless me Sharon Curry

The Children’s Church program needs you!

We need more teachers and teacher substitutes. We need more shepherds and shepherd substitutes. Each team of one teacher and one shepherd works one assigned Sunday per month.

Teacher and shepherd substitutes are called when needed. Children’s Church is for children ages 4-7 who leave the sanctuary with their teaching team after Time for Children during the 11:00 service. For their safety, St. Philip Policy requires that two adults always be with them. (If we cannot find enough adults to staff the program, we may not be able to continue it.) Can you volunteer? Make Katie’s day! [email protected] 817-282-9181

GLORY TO GOD THE [new] PRESBYTERIAN HYMNBOOK

Let’s replace our battered hymnbooks with the handsome new revised edition.

Hymnbook Potluck

6:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday, November 11, 2012

Save the date! Michael Waschevski will be our guest that evening to introduce us to the new hymnbooks. Michael is Minister of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth. He served on the committee that planned and edited the books, and he loves to show them off and explain them. Bring the family. Bring your friends. Bring your enthusiasm and your curiosity. Bring food--homemade or storebought--and we'll celebrate. If we get with the program, those new books will be in the pews before we know it! (Watch for reminders so you won't miss this.)

Each copy will be priced at $20.00 for over 800 hymns. Let’s pay less! Early orders are $18.00. Prepaid early orders are only $15.00. What a bargain!

(Think about putting all those fives in the piggy bank. What a haul.)

Come to the Hymbook Potluck (or to the collection plate or the office) to order one or more books as gifts from you or your family.

Pay $15 each when you order, if you can. (Label checks “For Hymnbooks.”)

Each new book will get a bookplate recognizing the giver and the giver’s memorial: 1. in honor of ____________________ 2. in memory of __________________ 3. to the Glory of God.

(See the bookplates on the inside front covers of the old hymnals in your pew.)

Let’s do it!

CAN YOU HELP KAY LYNN’S PANTRY? Kay Lynn’s Pantry is a ministry of St. Philip whereby our neighbors who are on Food Stamps can come in to receive taxable toiletries, paper products and cleaning products that Food Stamps cannot buy. The pantry has experienced a recent large increase in clients, which is stretching our resources beyond its limits. We have already decreased the frequency our clients may visit the pantry, from once a month to once every two months.

There are other steps that can help: Donate your paper grocery sacks, so we don’t have to purchase them. (No plastic, please.) Donate items for distribution such as toilet paper, shampoo, deodorant, etc. For a complete list of items,

contact Ann Treleven at [email protected] Donate money that will be used to purchase products. Become a buyer to fill in when the regular buyers aren’t available. We’ll supply the tax-exempt certificate, and

you’ll get reimbursed.

Thank you for caring!

Katie’s Comments

Over the past few months, I have found myself to be in the middle of the greatest change in my life, thus far. In some ways, I’ve been wandering through my life. I feel like I have no clear direction. I have no clear sense of what is next for me and no clear sense of what is next for you, my dear St. Philip. J.R.R.Tolkien said “not all who wander are lost.” So, even though I have been wandering for the past few months, I don’t consider myself to be lost. I’m on a journey. I’m searching for something that will thrill me; something that will be exciting, new, and challenging. I know that there is something BIG on the horizon for me and for you too, St. Philip. We have to be patient. We have to be willing to wait on God’s timing for the BIG thing to appear in our lives. Remember that His timing is perfect. When we want something to happen RIGHT NOW, we are saying that we have a better plan than God.

We have to be prepared to wander through life until God sees fit to put the BIG thing on our horizon. Because what doesn’t thrill you only makes you wander and not all who wander are lost.

Grace and Peace- Katie

Note of the Week………………

There has been a lot of excitement in the choir room this week! Our new choir robes arrived on October 1st just as planned, and everyone agrees---they are beautiful! Even though they were shipped very nicely on hangers and with cardboard separators from Murphy Robes in Champaign, Illinois, they still have a few wrinkles that we will steam out on Wednesday of this week. Then on Sunday, you will see the choir process down the center isle as usual but wearing their new Tudor style navy robes with garnet satin trim and Latin cross monogrammed on the yoke. (I think you will love them too!) There will also be a short dedication during the service for this anonymous gift to our church for which we are so very grateful. I am so thankful that someone was able to bless us and give us new robes to aid us in God’s work here at St. Philip! Thank you from all of us! Last Sunday you heard the Philippians sing “Be Thou My Vision” arranged by our own Stacy Camp who sings with the group. Thank you Stacy for sharing your talent with us! And thanks ahead of time to Tom Demer who will be playing and singing for us this Sunday at the St. Philip Barbeque. I can’t wait for good food and great talent like Tom! (See ad in this PUNCH for more details about Sunday’s Barbeque.) This Sunday the Chancel Choir will be singing “Cry No More” by Dan Forrest. Some of the words are: In the shadow where we linger, In this darkness we call home, Where the sighs are deep and doubtful and our aspirations groan, All is not in vain, Beloved, Our travail is not unknown. Christ within us, Christ among us, Christ the first and Christ the last; Love incarnate, hold Your children Till the storm of life is past. See you in church on Sunday.

Joyfully Singing in Christ, Pam Cochrane
