Dear Friends,

During these weeks after Christmas and Epiphany, we turn to the subject of “call.” We have heard about the call in the night to the boy Samuel, and we’ll also be hearing about the call to Jonah and to Jesus’ first disciples. While we may think of “a calling” as something that comes only – and somehow mysteriously – to clergy, the truth is that all of us are “called,” by virtue of our baptism. When we become members of a congregation, we promise to “share in worship and ministry through our prayers and gifts, our study and service, and so fulfill our calling to be dis-ciples of Jesus Christ.”

I invite you, as disciples called into the fellowship of this congregation, to be present for our Annual Meeting

this Sunday, January 28, immediately after worship. We will be electing officers as well as hearing reports of how various groups have served the Kingdom in 2017. Please be sure to thank those who will be hearing the call of God “through the voice of this congregation” to serve as Ruling Elders, Deacons, Corporation Officers, and members of the 2018 Nominating Committee.

We also thank those whose terms of service will be complete upon the installation of their successors: Ruling

Elders Mark Flake, Dave Plummer, and Cara Stephens; and Deacons Tricia Jackson, Marcia Shepard, and Lucy Works. All have served faithfully and very well. We appreciate their service to this congregation and to our Lord.

May we all be energized in living out our calling as we go forward into each new day.

Blessings, Meta

Another Global Village Build

Once again, I will be traveling to Central America for a Global Mis-sion Village Build for Habitat for Humanity. The build is in Esteli, Nicaragua which is located in Northern Nicaragua in Central America. The trip takes place Feb-ruary 10-18, 2018. Our build team will work on building homes from Monday thru Friday. The homes will be cement block like the ones we built in El Salvador. Please keep our team in your prayers as we travel and then build in Nicara-gua. Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry that helps build decent, affordable homes for de-serving families here and around the world.

Are You Recycling All That You Should?

I know it’s easy to toss things into the trash without think-ing whether or not it can be recycled. Read through the following list of items and how long it takes for them to break down in the landfills and maybe it will help you make the right decision.

Plastic bottles - 70 to 450 years Tin cans – 50 years

Plastic bags – 500 to 1,000 years or even forever! Glass bottles – 1-2 million years Hairspray bottles – 200-500 years Aluminum cans – 200 years

Styrofoam cups/containers 500 years to forever! Paper – 2 to 5 months. If closed in plastic, indefinite-

ly Plastic 6 pack rings – 450 years

Tin foil – It does NOT biodegrade! (Please don’t use more than necessary.)

Batteries – 100 years Plastic coated milk/juice cartons – 5 years A regular plastic cup (i.e. Solo) NEVER!

K-cups – Thousands of years or forever!

The really sad thing is that all but 2 of these items can be recycled. Styrofoam and K-cups cannot be recycled. These are items that I encourage you not to buy. All the others are easily recycled. Do remember that plastic bags must be taken to the bins at Giant Eagle. Please do share this list with you family and friends. It is so important to spread the word about recycling.
