EDUCATION IN FAITH

SOCIAL JUSTICE Last Friday the members of the Student Representative Council visited the Tontine Factory in Campbellfield to purchase bedding supplies to help the poor. The money from the term two school fundraiser was used. In conjunction Tontine very generously donated many seconds and sample items. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to actively help make a difference in people’s lives by living out the gospel value of respecting the dignity of each person. Thank you to all the parents who helped drive the children and transport the merchandise.

SPORT

INTERSCHOOL SPOR TS Our make-up round against Coburg West Primary School will be played on first Friday of Term 3, the 15th of July. This is due to the Friday’s current weather forecast which is not looking too good. We will be playing a HOME game and play will commence at 1pm. Our Boys Soccer team will be playing for a spot in the Finals so we wish them the best of luck.

REGIONAL & STATE CROSS COUNTRY Lucas Russo (SD) attended the Regional Cross Country event on Wednesday 15th of June and came 5th. This is an absolutely AMAZING feat and he should be congratulated on his wonderful achievement. Lucas has therefore qualified for the State Cross Country event. We are all so PROUD of your efforts and wish you the best of luck. This is an extremely high level of competition and to simply make the event is an amazing achievement in itself. The whole of St Olivers will be supporting you and cheering you on! GOOD LUCK LUCAS!! Cecilia Garden Sport Coordinator

LEARNING AND TEACHING

Back to the Past! Last week, the Juniors enjoyed going back in time to replicate what school life was like in the olden days as part of their Inquiry unit. Here are some reflections on the day: On Friday the Junior Grades dressed up. IT WAS THE OLDEN DAYS! Miss Protetto looked like Mary Poppins! At the start of the day, Miss Protetto came out and rang a bell. She looked great! The girls went inside first, then the boys followed. I was excited and nervous too. When we came inside, the girls sat on one side and the boys sat on the other side of the room. After that, we talked about things we have learnt about the olden days. Later on we had to stand up and sing, ‘God Save the Queen’. After we sang ‘God Save the Queen’, Miss Protetto told us to write on pretend slate boards that were black paper with real chalk. We were having so much fun! We had to write the alphabet in olden day letters. (Ava, Junior P) On Friday the Juniors got to dress up in olden day clothes. First we had to get in a boys line and girls line. Then as soon as the boys got in they took their hats off. We started off by singing, ‘God Save the Queen’, then doing olden day handwriting. Once we were done, we got our primer and read it. Soon we went to the hall and played olden day games. We then made butter and damper. We had to shake the butter for a long time. After lunch we buddied up with a Prep and taught them how to play olden day games. Soon after it was

home time. It was a marvellous day! (Zara, Junior P)

Congratulations to all of the children for their great learning and behaviour this semester. We wish all the children and their families a happy, safe and fun holiday and we look forward to seeing you in Term 3!

Liz Finlayson Learning and Teaching/ Student Services Leader

Dear Parents,

We have invited the CAMHS and Schools: Early Action Program (CASEA) to be part of the school community for 2 terms, effectively terms 2 and 3. The CASEA Program is an Early Intervention service for young children (Prep to Grade 3) who present with challenging behaviours. CASEA is a program developed by The Royal Children’s Hospital Integrated Mental Health Program and funded by the Mental Health Branch of the Department of Human Services. The program offers:

• A universal behavioural screen for all children in Grades Prep-3 • Professional development seminars for all teachers and school staff • Classroom behavioural activities for Grades Prep-3 children • Group programs for selected children and parents

Parents of children aged Prep to Grade 3 can expect additional information, a permission form, and questionnaire to be sent home with their child this week. In the meantime if you would like more information, please feel free to pick up a CASEA brochure from the school office. This program will be run by Leanne Pethick and Rhian Coram (Psychologists) from The Royal Children’s Hospital. We are looking forward to their expertise and support for our children and families. Please be aware we will be holding a whole school closure day on Thursday August 11.

TRANSITION Penola catholic College is currently conducting Principal Tours at both the Glenroy and Broadmeadows campus’. Please call Penola on 9301 2777 to register your attendance.
