Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 16, 2020
From the Desk of Fr. Brian Hecktor …
Dear St. Mark Parishioners,
We still have three long months until the general election. Please pray for civility as campaigns continue. Pray for unity and respect among persons in our nation, despite our many disagreements. And pray in thanksgiving for a nation in which we can peacefully hold an election and peacefully accomplish the continuation or transfer of power after the election.
The Church can and must support or oppose certain issues. Promoting the protection of life from conception to natural death and opposing abortion is the most obvious and important example. However, St. Mark Catholic Church, being a non-profit organization, may not show support or opposition for particular candidates or political parties. In this regard, no one has permission to put flyers on cars at the parish or place signs on parish property.
With the start of school this week, the church will not be open as it has been for the past few months. Monday-Friday, church will be locked after the 8 am Mass, except for Tuesday when the church will be open throughout the day for adoration as usual. I do open the church at 5:30 am on weekdays for anyone who would like some quiet time to pray.
Pray for our School students, families, faculty and staff as they begin school this week. Pray for our PSR catechists as they meet this week to plan for classes this fall.
This week, we celebrate St. John Eudes on Wednesday, St. Bernard on Thursday, Pope St. Pius X on Friday, and the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday. Thank God for these and all the Saints who always intercede for us.
God bless you and have a good week. Fr. Hecktor

… for those who have died, especially Dolores Kroner. May they, and all the faithful departed, rest in peace. … for the sick and injured, especially Joe Mehan (great-nephew
of Mike Mehan), Terry Mehan (nephew of Mike Mehan), Mike Mehan, Dolores Bollwerk, Margaret Cass, Mary Schmidt and those suffering from COVID-19, mental illness, drug and/or alcohol addition. WHY PRAY? The “ foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gentiles” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow.

From the School Principal … Dear Parishioners,
This will be an exciting week at St. Mark. We will welcome our students back on Monday morning. We have missed them dearly and can’t wait to see their faces. I am happy to welcome two new faculty members this year. Miss Emily Carroll will teach art and Mrs. Amy Wagner will be our learning consultant. They are looking forward to meeting the students and their families and we are excited to welcome them into our wonderful parish and school community.
We made some exciting changes and updates to the school over the course of the summer. Our school garden has continued to receive a facelift thanks to the Roman Catholic Foundation grant we received. The old fence was replaced by a beautiful vinyl fence, a greenhouse has been installed, and seating purchased so our teachers can use this space as an outdoor classroom. We have also spent significant time preparing the school for our new normal. We have social distancing signage throughout the hallways, replaced the office window with a sliding glass window, and placed plexi-glass dividers in the art room and computer room. The teachers also spent a lot of time clearing their rooms of all the extra furniture so they can safely distance the student desks.
The teachers and I are praying for a happy and healthy school year. We ask for your prayers and you can be assured that you are always in ours.
St. Mark, Pray for Us. Julie Bingham

The St. Mark Catholic School (Affton) "Dollar Match Fundraiser" is a request for donations which will be matched "dollar for dollar" with pledges made by various St. Mark organizations, ministries, and private contributors and will run through August 31st. The donated funds will be used to purchase safety and protection supplies including masks, thermometers, sanitizers, and disinfectants and is intended to offset a portion of the costs being incurred to address the requirements for providing a "safe return to school" for the PreK-8 students, teachers, and staff of St. Mark Catholic School (Affton). On behalf of the family of St. Mark Catholic School, we would like to express our sincere thanks for any donations which you are able to make on behalf of this request. We share your concerns and uncertainties, especially at this time, and will continue to pray for your safety and health as we move forward to face these challenges together.
LADIES GUILD will meet this Wednesday, August 19 at 6:30 pm for an informal gathering at the Athletic Fields’ Pavilion for a “Staycation.” Wear a face mask and your favorite T-shirt from a previous vacation. Bring a lawn chair. Light snacks will be provided. Dues will not be collected at this time. For more info call Sally at 314.892.7670.
As part of the School’s reopening plan, we are looking for items that students can use in our Aftercare program that can be played individually or safely distanced. Some of the items we are looking for are: bean bag toss games, corn hole, Frisbee golf, bowling games, Legos, Lincoln Logs, and hula hoops.
If you have any of these items to donate or would like to donate towards the purchasing of any of them, please contact me at 314.743.8643 or Lisa Berkbigler at [email protected].

Dear Fellow Parishioners,
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, St. Mark parishioners and others volunteered at Sts. Peter & Paul Soup Kitchen by preparing meals and serving them to the Kitchen’s clients. This is no longer the case for at least the remainder of 2020.
For the safety of all, the Soup Kitchen is relying on its staff to serve the homeless. Your financial contribution is greatly needed to help care for the homeless, supply food for meals, provide cleaning supplies and cover all the extended staff hours. Your financial contribution can be mailed to Sts. Peter & Paul Community Services (2612 Wyoming Street | St. Louis, MO 63118-2402). Please make your check payable to PPCS.
Thank You, Management of St. Mark’s Sts. Peter & Paul Soup
During this time of pandemic many can be experiencing stress and are filled with worry. We turn to our faith in God in these moments and sometimes talking and praying with a brother or sister in faith is just what we need to ease our mind when we are struggling. The sharing of our faith and the accompaniment of one another on the journey is a core value of the Archdiocese. If you would like to talk, pray or otherwise faith share with a representative of our Local Church, please email us at [email protected] and leave your contact information with a preference of time to be called. One of our prayer team members will reach out to you.
May God bless you and ease your suffering. We are here for you and look forward to connecting.
ST. MARK’S SVDP CONTINUES ITS MISSION DURING THE PANDEMIC The COVID-19 Virus isn’t keeping St. Mark’s St. Vincent de Paul down! We cannot meet in person or do home visits, but thanks to Zoom, email and the telephone, and the great generosity of you, our St. Mark’s parishioners, our work can continue. From January through June, we served 107 families with a total of250 people within our parish boundaries. Many had lost their jobs or were working reduced hours due to the pandemic. We helped with gas, water and electric bills, rent assistance, prescription drugs, food vouchers, car repairs, furniture, bedding, clothing and household items from the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. If you know of anyone in our parish in need of help, please encourage them to call the parish office at 314.743.8600. We will do all we can to help.
The need continues to be great! Now that utility companies are starting to disconnect customers and landlords and mortgage companies are requiring their tenants and home owners get up-to-date with rent/mortgage payments, we expect the demand for help to increase. We ask for you continued support in prayers and financial support. Donations can be placed in the poor box in the back of church, and food donations for the Affton Christian Food pantry can be placed in the cans in the vestibule and the cry room. Be sure that God will reward you for your generosity. Remember, you can’t out-give God!
May all of our college students have a blessed school year … whether it be on campus or distance-learning.
Feast Day - Saturday, August 22
On the 11th of October 1954, Pope Pius XII established the Feast of the Queenship of Mary to be celebrated throughout the world, and commanded that on that day each year, the world should renew its consecration to her. In the future the Feast came to be celebrated on the 22nd of August.
"The purpose of the Feast is that all may recognize more clearly and venerate more devoutly the merciful and motherly sovereignty of her who bore God in her womb" (Pope Pius XII,
Ad. Coeli Reginam).
On the day of her Assumption, Mary our Mother was solemnly crowned by Christ and received by the whole court of Heaven as Queen.
What Christ has done in Heaven and the Church has done on our behalf we should now do individually, that is, we should recognize Mary's Queenship, enthrone her in our homes, consecrate ourselves to her and, by this means, establish in our lives the reign of Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe.
