Transcript of St. Michael s Orthodox Christian ChurchAug 17, 2014 · Venerable Myron of Kyzikos, Eutychios,...
Sunday, August 17, 2014 To all who are present with us this morning,
Welcome! Thank You for being here. Please join us for coffee and...
in the Fellowship Hall following the Divine Liturgy.
You May Find the Text of the Divine Liturgy beginning on the bottom page 91 of the Service Book (gold embossed cross on the reddish brown cover) or in the green-spiral-bound book; sheet music can be found in the 8.5” x 11” large, spiral-bound booklet.
At the Kiss of Peace, our practice is for each of us to greet the person to our right and left with the bowing of our head, hands held in a prayerful clasp or crossed on the chest, while offering each other the Christian greeting, “Christ is in our midst!” and responding, “He is and shall be!”
Please remember that Holy Communion is reserved for those Chrismated Orthodox Christians who have appropriately prepared themselves through prayer, fasting and Confession to receive the Holy Mysteries of the Church. The bread (anti’doron, which means ’in place’ of the gifts) which we share after Communion and at the end of the Liturgy is for all.
Being mindful we are in church, let us always remember to… ...be quiet and attentive. Let us sing, pray, stand., sit, kneel and respond where
responses are indicated. Let us not talk, look around, text message, play games, etc. Especially let us work at this in the Communion line and when in line to venerate the Cross and depart. If we cannot hear the post-Communion prayers being chanted during our church departure, we are way too noisy.
...refrain from eating, drinking or chewing gum (most obviously and especially if you will be receiving Holy Communion).
...stay put. Except in rare cases, there are few of us who cannot stay in one location for two hours (actually less, for most of us).

THE EPISTLE READING St. Paul to the Corinthians (1Cor 4:9-16)
B RETHREN, God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are
fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are illclad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate; we have become, and are now, as the refuse of the world, the offscouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. I urge you, then, be imitators of me. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
THE HOLY GOSPEL According to St. Matthew (17:14-23)
A T THAT TIME, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before him said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls
into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.” And Jesus answered, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” Jesus said to them, “Because you have no faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith, even as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you. This kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting.” As they were traveling together through Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him, and he will rise on the third day.” _____________________________________________________________

“Food on the Hill” Lunch Ministry “Food on the Hill” is the name that has been attached to the lunch for those in need that will be prepared and served free of charge on the first Tuesday of each month (beginning in April). Our Men’s Fellowship has decided to take on the work of providing a bit of “daily” bread to those who can benefit from it. The next “Food on the Hill” lunch is scheduled for Tuesday, September 2 from 12:00 to 1:00 PM. Anyone who would like to support “Food on the Hill” in any capacity you would like, should contact Dan
Davis (724-237-2064) or Gus Flizanes (724-863-4443). Please make checks out to “St. Michael’s Church” with “Food on the Hill” on the memo line.
WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT SEPTEMBER 7? If your answer is, “The Steelers’ opener against the Browns,” you are a good Western Pennsylvanian. If you also responded, “But more importantly, it is St. Michael’s Annual Feast!” you are an astoundingly attentive member of our St. Michael’s Church. However you answered, be sure to show your support today for this year’s food fundraiser by putting your name on the volunteer list on the easel in our main entryway.

Thank you to librarian Diana Lammert who this week put back together our “stacks” which have been in great disorder since our Winter flooding. What? You didn’t know we have a library of Orthodox Christian books (and a smattering on other topics) that may be borrowed? Well, now that you do, stop in and peruse the shelves. No doubt you will find something worth checking out. _________________________________________ Can you kennel a dog or cat for a limited time while maintenance work is being accomplished at the Animal Friends of Westmoreland Shelter in Youngwood? If you think you might be willing to do that, contact the shelter at 724-925-2555 for more information. http://animalfriendswestmoreland.org ____________________________________

Can You Relate? At the beginning of each celebration of the Lord’s day on Saturday evening, toward the conclusion of Great Vespers the Church sings St. Simeon’s Prayer in which we hear the words — “Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace… for my eyes have seen Thy salvation… a light to lighten the gentiles and the glory of Thy people, Israel.” This moving hymn is not there simply to remind us of a 2000-years-past event in Christ’s life and the sentiment of an old man who beheld the event. It is given for us to sing as yearning participants in the now fulfilled reality of what the aged priest saw, God Incarnate, coming for the salvation of His creation. Can you relate? Righteous Simeon could not know the rest of what was coming. We do know because, “We have seen the True Light, we have received the Heavenly Spirit, we have found the True Faith…” There is no question that the worshiping Church enters each week into the priestly prophet Simeon’s spirit and sings his words. The question to ponder is, why is it so difficult for us to sing those words with him (in spirit and/or in person)? _____________________________
FEAST TREE There’s still time to pick a leaf!
Each “Leaf” is a tag for an item needed to support the annual Feast. Select a tag (or two), purchase the item listed-usually under $5 – and deposit your donations under the tree in the hallway. Buy when the item goes on sale or shop the “Dollar” stores. Simple things such as flour and sugar to help with baking preparations, dish detergent for clean-up, and pop and water are just some of the items needed. See Treegrower Mary Haiden for more details.
Volunteer at hospice and change a life! Senior Independence Hospice is seeking individuals who would like to volunteer their time to help serve those who are going through the final stages of their lives. Hospice volunteers provide a variety of support for patients and their families including: Friendship – visit patients in their own homes or in a facility for conversation, reading, music, a movie, or a cup of tea or coffee; help with light housework, meal preparation, or shopping. Respite – being present with a patient to give family members or a caregiver time to rest or take care of business or errands. Bereavement – supporting family members for a year through phone calls, visits and cards after the loss of their loved one. Office support – help with mailings, filing, phone calls, or other office duties to support the hospice program. Volunteers serve in the communities of: Greensburg, North Huntingdon, and Murrysville. We will work to find a volunteer opportunity that “fits” based on your experience, comfort level, and availability. If you are interested, please call Kathy Pehanich at 724-864-7388 ext. 488 or email at: [email protected]. _____________________________________________________________
