11th Sunday after Pentecost August 6 & 9, 2015

Last Sunday we heard of God’s generosity to us and through us. This

Sunday we are reminded that his generosity in material things should

serve as a constant reminder of his even greater generosity in spiritual

things. It is a truism that St. Augustine so beautifully taught: There is

nothing visible or transitory that does not point us back to something

more important that is invisible and imperishable. The readings

encourage the response of an attitude adjustment in us that includes

a reordering of our priorities.

Communion is a part of worship today. Because God

speaks of communing together as an expression of unity in

faith we practice close communion. All WELS members are

welcome to commune with us. Visitors, please speak with the

pastor or an elder before communing.

First Lesson: Exodus 16:2-20 People would still like it today if God gave everything temporal like manna from heaven. And if it happened they

would behave no differently than the Israelites did: they would eat their fill and be not one bit fuller for it; they

would still starve for their failure to see the true Bread from heaven. Note the point of God’s generosity even in

temporal bread: Then you will know that I am the LORD your God. That is always the point of God’s invisible hand

giving visible blessings, that we may see behind them nothing but the power of God and the grace of the Savior.

Each day look at his various visible gifts and give thanks for them as evidence of his tender love for you and his

compassion for every circumstance of your life with him, your God and Savior. For he sustains the body with the

perishable, so that he may fill the soul with himself.

2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The

Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt! There we sat

around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into

this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” 4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The

people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will

test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are

to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the

other days.”

6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that

it was the LORD who brought you out of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you will see the

glory of the LORD, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that

you should grumble against us?” 8 Moses also said, “You will know that it was

the LORD when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in

the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are

not grumbling against us, but against the LORD.” 9 Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the

LORD, for he has heard your grumbling.’” 10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward

them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread.

Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’” 13 That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a

layer of dew around the camp. 14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the

ground appeared on the desert floor. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to each

other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was.

Moses said to them, “It is the bread the LORD has given you to eat. 16 This is what

the LORD has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer

for each person you have in your tent.’” 17 The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18 And

when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too

much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered

just as much as they needed. 19 Then Moses said to them, “No one is to keep any of it until morning.” 20 However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until

morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with

Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 10:1-5,11-13 Make no mistake about it. God wants you to get the point of the readings for this Sunday and to take seriously all

of his Word. If we live only for what we can see and delight only in the visible blessings of God without reference to

him as their source, we, too, will perish. We will have no one to blame but ourselves. God in his visible blessings

and in his protecting providence has been more than generous, giving us all that we need to avoid that terrible

fate and to live joyously in his presence now and forever.

10 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our

ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They

were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same

spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual

rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.5 Nevertheless, God was not

pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings

M: The Gospel according to John chapter 6

C: Glory be to you, O Lord.

Gospel: John 6:24-35 People eat the loaves and are filled! They think no further about it than to look forward to the next filling. But

Jesus’ miracle was a sign, i.e., something that pointed beyond the thing itself to something higher and more

important, namely to the truth that he is the Son of God and the Savior. As such he has power to satisfy the needs

of the body; but he always does it to remind us that the greater satisfaction is the food for the soul that gives

eternal refreshment. Say, “Thank you,” at the table. In doing so remember the greater food in the banquet of his

Word and sacrament. That will make the eating of the perishable food he gave all the more enjoyable because of

the greater food to which it points, and the generosity and grace of the one who gives both in such rich measure.

24 Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got

into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, “Rabbi, when

did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you

saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not

work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of

Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” 28 Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” 29 Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” 30 So they asked him, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe

Sermon: Work For Enduring Food John 6:24-35

STAND

Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten

of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things

were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was

incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and

was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the

Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and

his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from

the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is

worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We

believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one

baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the

Burden Bearing Study God has borne all our

burdens in Christ. His love compels us to bear

each other's burdens. Our study leads us into

Scripture's lessons on suffering. Discussion

based on real-life accounts lets students con-

sider how they should demonstrate love for

others. This week we look at Burdens are

bridges to repentance and faith. Please join

us as we explore how to live our faith in this

way! We meet Sundays at 9:15 a.m. in the

which the Manitowoc County Child Protection

Help Needed On Sunday, September 13, the

South Brown County Chapter of Thrivent Fi-

nancial will host an expo at WayMorr Park.

The expo will include food, drink, crafts, rum-

mages, and entertainment. The School Pro-

motions Committee would like to set up a ta-

ble to hand out information about our congre-

gation. The expo will run from 10am until

7pm. We need volunteers to sit at our booth

and pass out information. Volunteer time is

blocked out for one hour at a time. Please

sign up for as few or as many hours as you’d

like to help. Thank you! If you have any ques-

The MLHS “Sweet Corn Fest” is here. The corn

will be picked and ready for our congregation

Synod Convention Actions WELS News

Three hundred eighty-eight voting dele-

gates attended the 63rd WELS Biennial

Convention at Michigan Lutheran Seminary

in Saginaw, Mich., July 27-30. The conven-

tion’s floor committees reported and pre-

sented their resolutions on Wednesday

afternoon and Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, the Ministry Financial

Plan proposed by the Synodical Council

was adopted. Floor Committee #10, Fi-

nance and Budget, noted that the plan “not

only maintains existing ministry but also

provides for careful growth.” Resolution 10-

02, which was also adopted, encourages

congregations to prayerfully consider in-

creasing their Congregation Mission Offer-

ings to help sustain and grow ministry. The

current Financial Ministry Plan is based on

a one percent increase in Congregation

Mission Offerings in both 2016 and 2017.

Funding for a full-time archivist is in-

cluded in the Ministry Financial Plan for the

next biennium. The position is being fund-

ed by Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary. Floor

Committee #8, WELS Archives, resolved

“that Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary pro-

ceed with its plan to fund for two years a

qualified archivist who can oversee the

relocation of materials from its campus to

the WELS Center for Mission and Ministry.”

The resolution was adopted.

Floor Committee #21, the Ad Hoc Com-

mission 2 Floor Committee, presented ten

resolutions, which were all adopted, and

one report to the convention on Wednes-

day and Thursday. This Ad Hoc Commis-

sion was established by a resolution from

the 2013 synod convention to “look at all

areas of the synod structure and pro-

grams especially in the areas not ad-

dressed by the previous commission.” The

commission addressed 13 topics in

depth, and the floor committee addressed

each one.

In Resolution 21-01, delegates ap-

proved the recommendation from the Ad

Hoc Commission 2 to have the Synodical

Council’s Compensation Review Commit-

tee develop a draft proposal of revised

guidelines. The current compensation

guidelines were developed in 2003.

Resolution 21-02 rejects the Ad Hoc

Commission 2’s recommendation for del-

egates to serve at two consecutive con-

ventions to help provide better prepara-

tion and continuity. The resolution encour-

ages the Conference of Presidents to in-

vestigate other methods to better prepare

delegates for synod convention.

Resolutions 21-03 and 21-04 affirm

the current practice of electing district

and synod praesidium by taking nomina-

tions from the convention floor. The

adopted resolutions also encourage dis-

tricts and the synod to develop proce-

dures to allow delegates to become better

acquainted with the list of nominated candi-

dates.

The first resolution presented by Floor

Committee #14, Congregation and Ministry

Support Group A—Worship, Evangelism, and

Congregational Counseling, recommended

that the Conference of Presidents make the

call of the Commission on Congregational

Counseling director permanent. The resolu-

tion notes that the Commission on Congre-

gational Counseling is currently serving 41

congregations in the Self-Assessment and

Adjustment Program with 81 more waiting to

be served. Delegates adopted the resolu-

tion.

Floor Committee #2, Conference of

Presidents, presented a resolution titled

“WELS TLC (Translation Liaison Commit-

tee)”, which resolved to have the Confer-

ence of Presidents direct a review of the

upcoming revised edition of the Holman

Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) with the

results of the review to be shared at the

2017 synod convention or the 2019 con-

vention, if necessary.
