Liturgical Accommodations during the COVID – 19 Pandemic

Diocese of Joliet

Effective March 17, 2020 until prudently advisable to discontinue.

• Dispensation from the obligation of Sunday Mass is effective immediately.

• The reception of Holy Communion should be by hand only…reception on tongue is temporarily suspended.

• Reception of the Precious Blood is suspended.

• The exchange of peace should be expressed verbally. • The Holy Water fonts should be emptied and not

filled again. Our parishes could make the Holy Water available in containers by which parishioners could fill their own bottles.

• Your cooperation with the foregoing is genuinely appreciated. While it is understood that the expected practices may be difficult for some, I assure you they are being undertaken for the common good and to significantly halt the spread of the virus.

Prayers are essential. You are encouraged to in-tensify the classical Lenten practice of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

My dear Sisters and Brothers in the Joliet Diocese,

Thank you very much for your cooperation with actions that have been taken to minimize, to the degree possible, the spread of COVID - 19 (coronavirus). Your health, as well as the health of the public at large, have been my deepest concern. It is important that all of us cooperate with public leadership to make our efforts as effective as possible in containing this pandemic. I fully realize and feel the painful loss along with you the cancellation of Masses on weekends. Because celebrating Mass is central to whom we are, I understand that its absence creates a palpable void. However, out of genuine concern for the welfare of everyone, I believe it is prudent to cancel weekend Masses for the time being. Certain liturgical gatherings, namely daily Mass, funerals, and weddings are permitted provided that: • The service may not have an attendance in excess of 50

persons. This number is the current directive of Governor Pritzker. Going forward, our point of reference regarding numbers will be those issued by the Governor of Illinois.

• Every precaution be taken to prevent the spread of the virus. • The attached liturgical accommodations are being implemented

and parishes are called to curtail or cancel other non-essential gatherings. These two directives will be ended when it is prudently advisable.

I want to strongly encourage all of the faithful to continue our Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Need experienced by those served by the Church continues, even especially so, at this time of crisis. Please consider reaching out to your local parish about the possibility of providing financial support or personal assistance. Catholic Charities, which serves many of the poor and elderly in the Diocese of Joliet, has a special need for volunteers to serve those in vulnerable situations. Lenten Regulations

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. Therefore, all of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial. All Catholics are encouraged to support generously the charitable works of the whole Church, pray and perform works of charity and mercy. 6. Those who are sick, pregnant, or nursing, or whose health would adversely be affected by fasting or abstinence, should not consider themselves bound by these norms.

Reglas para la Cuaresma

1. Es obligatorio para toda persona mayor de 14 años de abstenerse de comer carne el Miércoles de Ceniza y todos los Viernes de la Cuaresma. 2. Toda persona a partir de los 18 años de edad y hasta los comienzos de los 60 años entra en la obligación penitencial del ayuno del Miércoles de Ceniza y del Viernes Santo. 3. En estos dos días de ayuno y abstinencia solo se permite una comida completa sin carne por día. Se puede permitir tomar otras dos comidas sin carne que sean suficientes para mantener las fuerzas de acuerdo a las necesidades de cada uno, pero juntas no deben igualar otra comida completa. No se permite alimentarse entre comidas durante esos dos días, sin embargo ser permiten líquidos, incluyendo leche y jugos de frutas. Cuando la salud o la capacidad de trabajar se viesen seriamente afectadas no obliga esta ley. 4. El hecho de ignorar completamente la ley del ayuno y la abstinencia es un acto pecaminoso. 5. The Diocese of Joliet Victim Assistance Coordinator is available to help vic-tims /survivors of child sexual abuse by a cleric, employee or volunteer of the Catholic Church.

The Victim Assistance Coordinator will report to Bishop Conlon and coordinate efforts of pastoral support and outreach to assist in the healing process.

The Victim Assistance Coordinator can also assist in making a report to civil authorities.

CORONAVIRUS

What You Can Do

Stop the spread. Even if you are not particularly concerned about the risk to yourself or your own family, these tactics will protect others who may be more vulnerable. Many of us will carry the virus before having any symptoms (and may never develop any).

Wash your hands well for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. Sing the refrain to Michael Joncas’ song “On Eagle’s Wings” (“And he will raise you up...”) while you wash.

Avoid touching your face.

Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue.

Follow the guidance of local officials.

Stay home if you become ill.

Don’t take what you don’t need. Hoarding worsens the situation, and can lead to more infections and more impacts for the most vulnerable.

Leave the masks to others. Masks only make sense for health care workers and those who are infected. They are not guaranteed to prevent transmission anyway.

Do not overbuy supplies. Retailers are being wiped out of disinfectants and other supplies, leaving some who most need them without. Be prepared, but be thoughtful and reasonable.

Advocate for the vulnerable and targeted.

Have compassion for those most at risk. Stand up for those who need the most help and make sure they are being cared for, without judgment.

Fight racism. Discrimination against those with Asian background only hurts the situation.

Proactively love your neighbor!

Check in on isolated or vulnerable neighbors and offer to help with specific tasks such as shopping, child or pet care, cleaning, etc.

If you are in a position of power, use that power for the good of all. Allow workers to work from home or take time off, limit large gatherings, follow government guidance, etc.

Thank those on the front lines who are protecting us, such as health care workers, police, firefighters. Be gentle and kind with them.

Pray for all those affected by the crisis.
