Our Calhoun Cougars are succeeding in so many activities – in and out of the classroom - that we wanted to promote them by publishing a newspaper. Since this news is about what you and your classmates are doing – we wanted you to name this publication. Please submit any names for this newspaper to our school secretary, Loretta Garza, by Friday, Nov. 18. The student who comes up with the winning name will receive a gift certificate to La Milpa Mexican Restaurant, located at 820 S. I-35 East in Denton. This newsletter will be distributed every six weeks with your report cards, and will also be emailed to those families who have provided us with an email address. If you have not given us your current email, please send it to Mrs. Garza at [email protected] It will also be online at www.dentonisd.org/Calhoun. We also want our students and families to know about Calhoun cultural events, School celebrations, PTA/Parent Involvement news, IB community and service and service learning events, International Baccalaureate middle years program news, and other important news and information related to the students and staff on our campus. Currently we have 852 students enrolled on our campus and all is going very well. We are finishing up that last few weeks of the 2 nd Six Weeks of School and you will be receiving a copy of this newsletter and the 2 nd six weeks report card. Again, we’re so proud of all our Calhoun Cougars and are excited about providing another avenue in which to recognize you! Think about the money collection and bake sale we had earlier this year to raise money for victims of Hurricane Irene. Then we sponsored the garage sale to encourage people to recycle used items. The money from the garage sale went to helping the Denton Animal Shelter take care of unwanted pets. Did you know that these events were straight out of the questions students were asking in their classes? Questions like “what can I do to make a difference?” and “how can we make things better?” As you look at your Unit Questions through the viewpoints of an Area of Interaction, you may have some similar questions of your own. Don’t wait until you “grow up” to ask them. Bring them up in class or get in touch with me. Students in Community and Service Club, International Club, National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, and Community Garden Club have activities centered on being active in Denton. Don’t think that you have to be a member of one of these organizations. The students who led the garage sale and bake sale acted on their own, without waiting to be given instructions, and without being members of any organization. They acted on how they felt about the world around them. You can, too! Los estudiantes en la Comunidad y el Club de Servicio, el Club Internacional, La Sociedad Nacional de Honor de Junior (National Junior Honor Society), el Concilio de Estudiantes, y el Club de Jardín de la Comunidad tienen actividades enfocadas en ser activos en Denton. No piense que usted tiene que ser un miembro de una de estas organizaciones. Cougars helping others throughout

The culminating activity for the 6th grade IB heritage project was a Culture Fair held on October 5th. Students invited their parents and families to share and celebrate world cultures.

GARAGE SALE (Oct. 28-29) The Eighth-grade students from the district’s International Baccalaureate
program at Calhoun Middle School, under the supervision of Calhoun Math Teacher Frances Dornan, hosted a garage on, Oct. 28 and 29 and raised more than $1,000 for the Denton Animal Shelter.
The students developed the idea for the garage sale after studying human consumption through math. The students determined that human consumption often leaves a large percentage of reusable “waste” and figured they could make a difference locally by helping others find used goods through their own Cougars Making a Difference garage sale.

All of Calhoun’s 830 students enjoyed the festivities at the school’s annual Cougar Day on Oct. 21. There were all types of activities for the students and staff to enjoy on a perfect day!
