Pope St. John Paul II wrote in his 1992 Post Synodal Apostolic Exhortation, “The priest is called to be the living image of Jesus Christ, the spouse of the Church.(49) Of course, he will always remain a member of the community as a believer alongside his other brothers and sisters who have been called by the Spirit, but in virtue of his configuration to Christ, the head and shepherd, the priest stands in this spousal relationship with regard to the community. "Inasmuch as he represents Christ, the head, shepherd and spouse of the Church, the priest is placed not only in the Church but also in the forefront of the Church."(50) In his spiritual life, therefore, he is called to live out Christ's spousal love toward the Church, his bride. Therefore, the priest's life ought to radiate this spousal character, which demands that he be a witness to Christ's spousal love and thus be capable of loving people with a heart which is new, generous and pure - with genuine

self - detachment, with full, constant and faithful dedication and at the same time with a kind of "divine jealousy" (cf. 2 Cor. 11:2) and even with a kind of maternal tenderness, capable of bearing "the pangs of birth" until "Christ be formed" in the faithful (cf. Gal. 4:19).” This spousal character is absolutely critical to the life and ministry of any priest. This is because it reflects the reality of laying down one’s life for the sake of another. All of us have an obligation to pray for more priestly vocations (see Mathew 9:38, Luke 10:2), but it is necessary that we beg the Master of the Harvest to raise up more young men who have a heart after the Spousal Heart of our Lord. As a parish, we are blessed to have one of our own members studying for Priestly ministry. Please keep Emmanuel Carreño in your prayers; and pray and beg for more vocations.

United with you in prayer for more vocations,

Fr. Dobbins

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, the Virginia Attorney General announced this week that he will be investigating allegations of sexual abuse of minors by clergy as well as how allegations of abuse have been handled by Church leaders throughout the Commonwealth. Our Bishop and Bishop Knestout of the Diocese of Richmond recently pub-lished a statement addressing the investigation. On the di-ocesan website you will find resources as well as detailed answers to frequently asked questions regarding the critical issues we are facing within our Church. Lastly, on Friday, Bishop Burbidge published an episode of The Walk Hum-bly Podcast, during which he directly addresses the investi-gation and some of the questions he has received. All these resources are available at: ArlingtonDiocese.org/ChildProtection

In addition to fervent prayer for all victims of sexual abuse, please also offer your prayers that the Church will be purified and made stronger by recommitting to greater accountability and continuing to work for the good of God’s people.

P. Dobbins
