Saint Lorenzo Ruiz of Manila Feast Day September 28

Lorenzo was born in the Philippines and raised as a Catholic

serving his parish church and Dominican Confraternity faithfully. In

1636, he was falsely accused of murder and fled his home on a ship

with three Dominican priests on June 10, 1636, bound for Okinawa,

Japan. Upon arrival, they were arrested for being Christian. Lorenzo

was ordered to recant his faith. He refused and was put to death.

According to the record of his death, his last words were, "I am

a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for God. Had I a

thousand lives, all these to Him I shall offer. Do with me as you

please."

Lorenzo was beatified by Pope John Paul II on February 18,

1981. The beatification ceremony was held in the Philippines

making it the first beatification ceremony ever held outside the

Vatican. His canonization took place at the Vatican on October 18,

1987.

A miracle attributed to his intercession occurred in 1983. A two-

year-old girl, Alegria Policarpio, suffering from hydrocephaly, a

condition she had since birth, was miraculously cured.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz is the patron saint of Filipino youth, the

Philippines, people working overseas, and altar servers.

In today’s Gospel we hear the story of Lazarus and the rich man. There is such a scriptural insistence on taking care of the poor and needy because when all have their fill of the good gifts of God it is a sign of God’s care and presence. As you put your donations in the SVDP red enve-lopes located in the pews, know that you are giving God’s compassion and love to those who are Lazarus in today’s world.

Our next meeting will be October 1st at 7pm
