THIS SUNDAY’S GOSPEL READING While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signalled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him.

ASK FATHER JOE
To those returning to St John Bosco School, and those new to the school, we say welcome, from the Parish of St John Bosco and St Aloysius. We look forward to meeting you through the school and parish events. I commend to you the leadership of our Principal, Mr Paul Murphy, Mrs Mia Harms the Deputy Principal, Mrs Catherine Birchmore the Religious Education Coordinator, and all the staff, especially members of the teaching staff. Last Sunday the Parish celebrated the Solemnity of St John Bosco on his actual feast day, 31st January, with a special Mass at 10 am followed by brunch. It was great to see school staff, several parents and children and families present. Our school will celebrate the feast on Thursday. Last year, Pope Francis said:
“The Church has great expectations concerning the care of the young; great too is the charism that the Holy Spirit bestowed on St John Bosco, a charism that has been carried forward by the Salesian Family with a passionate dedication to the youth of all continents and a flowering of numerous priestly, religious, and lay vocations”.
We are the bearers of his spirit and charism, and we seek to live it each day in the school and parish. God bless you all, Fr Joseph Lee SDB, PP

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
SAINT JOHN BOSCO FEAST DAY Thank you to those families and staff who celebrated the Feast of St John Bosco (Sunday 31st January) with the Parish at the 10.00am Mass, last Sunday. Tomorrow at 9.00am, the whole St John Bosco School Community will honour this important Feast Day, and ask for special blessings for our school. It is a tradition at our school that all families are warmly welcomed to be a part of all our Liturgies and Masses, which are normally celebrated in our Parish Church.
ASH WEDNESDAY Next Wednesday 10th February, all students will celebrate Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent with the following Liturgies: Years 3 - 7, Mass with the Parish at 9.00am Reception – Year 2 Liturgy at 10.15 am All families are warmly invited to share in these celebrations with their children. Historically called "the day of ashes", Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. There are 7 Wednesdays and 40 days (excluding Sundays) before Easter. The significance of the forty days comes from Jesus spending 40 days in the wilderness before beginning his public ministry. On this day early Christians declared their sinfulness and desire for forgiveness to their community. They wore sackcloth and covered themselves with ashes as symbols of their unworthiness. Instead of us wearing sack clothes we now observe Ash Wednesday by having the mark of the cross made on our forehead with ashes. Palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday are burned to make the ashes. The ashes are a symbol of sadness and death. The cross reminds us that we acknowledge Jesus who died for all humankind on the cross. And so as the sign of the cross is marked on our foreheads, we pray that we will turn away from sin and grow closer to Jesus during this special season of Lent. Catherine Birchmore, RE Co-ordinator
CHINESE NEW YEAR—Year of the Monkey Happy Chinese new year to all of our families! 2016 will be the Year of the Monkey according to Chinese zodiac. The Year of the Monkey will start from Feb. 8, 2016 (Chinese New Year) and lasts to January 27, 2017.
The monkey is a clever animal. It is usually compared to a smart person. During the
Spring and Autumn Period (770 - 476 BC), the dignified Chinese official title of
marquis was pronounced 'Hou', the same as the pronunciation of ‘monkey’ in
Chinese. The animal was thereby bestowed with an auspicious meaning.
LIBRARY NEWS The Library is beginning the year with gusto. We will be having a Scholastic Back to
School Book Sale. The books will be on sale after school this Thursday 4th February
from 3.00 - 3.30pm and next week on Monday 8th, Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th
February before and after school, as well as during lunch times.
Please come in to the Library on Welcome Night to see the mini book shop and to buy
your child a book. All proceeds go to the Library to buy more books. Brochures will
be sent home with your child on Wednesday.

INTRODUCING OUR NEW SJB SCHOOL STAFF KATE SATOMURA Hajimemashite! (Nice to meet you). My name is Kate Satomura and I am the new Japanese teacher. I am very excited to be joining St John Bosco School this year. Although I was born and grew up in Adelaide, after finishing University, life's journey took me to Japan, where I met my husband, learned to speak Japanese, fell in love with the language and culture and stayed for many years. When I returned to Australia, I began teaching Japanese. I have taught Japanese, French and ESL in both Independent and Government schools and I am pleased to be joining the Catholic Schools community. I am passionate about languages and believe learning a language helps us to see the world through new eyes. I hope I am able to ignite this spark in the students at St John Bosco, just as my wonderful language teachers at St Aloysius College did for me many years ago. Please come and say 'konicihwa'. I look forward to meeting you. FLAVIA LUPPINO Hello, My name is Flavia Luppino. I feel very privileged to be part of the St John Bosco community and I look forward to working with and getting to know your children (and families). I come to St John Bosco school with many years of teaching experience. I have taught from Reception to Year 7, in a number of schools, both in the Department of Education and in Catholic Education where I have held many roles. I enjoy kayaking with my husband and being a mum to our children. I also love walking, cooking and being with family and friends. I am looking forward to this opportunity to be part of such a welcoming community here at St John Bosco. ANTHONY SICARI My name is Anthony Sicari and together with Nicki Sharrad, I am teaching the Year 5 class. I have been a part of the Saint John Bosco Community, since 1997 where I began my schooling. I progressed to Saint Michael’s College for High School, where I completed Year 12 in 2009. I graduated from the University of South Australia in 2014, completing my Bachelor of Education. I returned to Saint John Bosco in 2013 as a student-educator working with the Year 4/5 community alongside Nicki Sharrad and Dino Zandona. In 2014, I was employed as a part of the Saint John Bosco Out of School Hours Care team, and continue to be a current member of this team. During 2015, I became a regular relief teacher at St John Bosco, and have taught all year levels and students at various stages. I am excited for the start of the school year, as I begin my teaching journey, with the Year 5 Community. My favourite subjects are Religious Education, Mathematics, PE and Science. I have always had a passion for sport, which I display by playing Football at a local club and by being an avid AFL lover, following my beloved Port Adelaide. I am very friendly, approachable and always wish to meet as many new faces as I can, in order to build relationships with all of the parents within our school community. If you see me at any time inside or outside of Saint John Bosco; please introduce yourself and say hello, as I always have the time to engage with the members of our wonderful school Community. CLAUDINE GREEN Hello my name is Claudine DiLernia Green and I have been teaching in Catholic schools for the past 11 years. I feel privileged to work in Catholic schools where I am committed to further develop the understanding of the life and work of St John Bosco. I am very excited to belong to the teaching team here at St John Bosco and look forward to getting to know my Year 3/4 students and their families. On a personal level, I really enjoy camping during the holidays with my family and coach an under 9’s netball team. I have two beautiful girls, aged 6 and 8 who attend Whitefriars Primary School and keep my husband and I very busy. I look forward to working in partnership with the St John Bosco community in 2016.

Dear SJB Families, Friends, Staff and Students,
Happy new year and welcome to the new school year at St John Bosco school. On behalf of our staff I
welcome all of our families back to school as we begin 2016. We are looking forward to another exciting
year of learning and growing.
Holidays give us all a time to renew and refresh, do different things and have some quality time with our
family and friends. I hope you were able to enjoy some space and freedom.
It is time to focus on learning and our staff are well prepared in their plans and programs for the year.
We undertook a very busy and productive time of working together last week. We looked at the word
JOY in our motto, reflected on our Salesian spirit and our Vision, explored Mindfulness, took time to plan
and attended a joint professional learning program with our colleagues at Tension Woods Catholic
school. Holidays too were busy for all of us as we prepared for the year ahead.
You would have noticed a big difference in our school site as the building project takes shape. Enormous
efforts were undertaken in amongst weather challenges and time challenges to particularly prepare the
yard and Senior Unit classrooms. The yard hit unexpected issues with drainage following the rains from
last week and should be open during the week/early next week (it does look fantastic). The classrooms
were fully ready on Sunday afternoon and with an almighty team effort resembling the last minutes of a
Block episode for reveal (!) Everyone pitched in to get the rooms ready for our students. The project is
on track and you will see the transportables start to take shape. The target time for completion is term
2. The site is looking fantastic and brings to life a vision for our school in developing a contemporary
learning community.
As we begin it is important for parents to take time with their child to look at the year ahead and to set
goals and encouragement for success as students enter into the new learning program. Set your child up
for success and be positive and encouraging in your talks and ideas as goals and plans emerge.
On Thursday we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint John Bosco, the founder of the Salesian family and our
patron. This week we will celebrate our Feast Day on Thursday with Mass. Parents are very welcome. I
extend our good wishes to our Salesian community at Brooklyn Park as we give thanks for Saint John
Bosco and for the Salesians. We are fortunate to have wonderful support from Fr Joseph and the
Salesian community. We remember with gratitude the contribution of Salesians past and present, living
the spirit of Saint John Bosco.
We ask for your attendance at Welcome Night. This is an important night for our community to gather.
We don't ask parents to attend many functions but this is an important one. We ask parents not to see
our school events as options. We need you and your child to show your interest and participation in
community life. The program is outlined in our Bulletin.
Our Bulletin provides you with a wonderful view of our school each week. I encourage you to take the
time to read it and be informed about what happens in the community. Thanks for your support.
Blessings and good wishes for the year ahead. Paul
