The Apostles Creed

The Roman Missal states that instead of the Nicene Creed, especially during Lent and Easter Time, the baptismal Symbol of the Roman Church, known as the Apostle’s Creed, may be used. The Nicene Creed is usually used throughout the year, so, it is a nice change to use the Apostle’s Creed during the special times of Lent and Easter. However, some people are a little uncomfortable using the Apostle’s Creed, and I think this is due to not fully understanding the power of Jesus.

In the Apostle’s Creed, it states that Jesus descended into hell. This image needs to be understood properly. Jesus did not descend into hell as a punishment, or against his will. It is better to understand that Jesus descended into hell as a conqueror over sin and death. He smashed open the gates of hell to show that the power of Christ can enter into any place and offer salvation. Jesus is the victor, and even the powers of hell will run before his presence.

So, when you are praying the Apostles’ Creed, please remember that the power and presence of Jesus Christ are unlimited. Even the gates of hell are not a barrier to Our Savior. Jesus freely descended into hell, and he did so as the victorious King of Kings. Salvation comes from Jesus, and there is no place that the power of Christ cannot reach. Yours in Christ,

LIVING BRANCHES The Gospel and second reading for this Fifth Sunday of Easter emphasize the need for us to remain in Christ, and he in us. This shared life finds expression in the image of the one vine and many branches. We become living branches of the vine, members of the Body of Christ through baptism, Eucharist, and confirmation, sacraments of sharing God's own life. The First Letter of John describes the fruit of this vine as active love of neighbor: "And his commandment is this: we should believe . . . and love one another" (1 John 3:23). Our first reading from Acts shows us an example of someone who shares in Christ's life in the person of Saint Paul. Paul's fearless witness, even at the risk of his life, is proof to everyone that the risen Lord's Spirit truly fills him with life and is bearing fruit in him. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

ADORATION of the

BLESSED SACRAMENT Mondays in church

12:00 NOON - 8:00 pm with Benediction at 7:45 pm

From Letters to a Brother Priest:

“There are five graces we receive each time we visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

By His glorious wounds we are the ones who are transfigured and changed through His healing love.

Restoration, sanctification,

transformation, reparation,

and salvation are the graces being poured out graciously upon us with each hourly hour we make. Like Peter, this is

why we should exclaim in His Divine Presence ‘Lord, how good it is for us to be here?’”

Msgr. Josefino Ramirez

PLEASE COME — VISIT JESUS

PEOPLE OF THE CROSS UNITED We are all members of the Body of Christ. If one member suffers, all members suffer.

(1 COR: 12:26) Please pray for our brothers and sisters who suffer persecution in many countries throughout the world because of their Christian faith.

Prayer with Scripture

We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In medieval times, one country, Scotland, linked its economy to the liturgy. Four holy days of the church calendar were keyed to the legal year. On these days, rents were due, clergy and servants were paid, and contracts and leases would begin or end. The term days were Pentecost (called Whitsunday), the Feast of Saint Martin on November 11 (Martinmas), the Feast of the Presentation on February 2 (Candlemas), and August 2 (Lammas), a harvest festival. On Lammas day, the first loaf of bread from the summer wheat harvest was given to the village priest. After the Reformation, which swept the Catholic festivals away, the term days were gradually detached from the old feasts. It was only in 1990 that the term days were anchored on the 28th of February, May, August, and November. Today the old Scottish universities are the last hold-outs, still naming their terms or semesters after the old festivals. Scottish students today may not know about the liturgical year, but they still call the fall term Martinmas, and the spring session Candlemas. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

POPE FRANCIS TWEET FOR THE WEEK Life only fully makes sense

when it is given as a gift. It becomes tasteless when it is lived for itself alone.

THANK YOU, BULLETIN ADVERTISERS This bulletin is subsidized completely by those companies whose advertisements appear on the last two pages. If you have the opportunity, you may thank them in the name of our parish by using their products or services. Should you desire to participate as a sponsor of our bulletin, you may contact J.S. Paluch Company at 1-800-566-6170.

Grafted into Him Christians need our true vine, Jesus Christ. When Jesus says, "I am the vine, and you are the branches" He is talking about the special relationship that exists between Him and us. We are dependent on him for everything we need in our daily life—from food, health, family and good friends to love, forgiveness, hope, comfort and eternal life. Without being joined to the main stem and roots we would die. As Jesus said, "If you stay joined to me, and I stay joined to you, then you will produce lots of fruit. But you can’t do anything with-out me" (John 15:5 CEV). We were joined to Jesus at our baptism. As the water of baptism was poured over us we were grafted into the vine, Jesus, intimately connected to Him. We feed that connection to Him when we come to worship, and when we hear His Word. We are joined to Jesus when we receive His body and blood in Holy Commun-ion. We are refreshed and freed from the guilt of our sin. Our faith is strengthened as we are nourished through God’s Word and Sacrament. The question is, are you still joined firmly to the True Vine of Life or are you wilting on the weed pile?

ANOINTING OF THE SICK On Saturday, May 19th, we will celebrate the communal Anointing of the Sick at a special Mass beginning at 1:00 pm. This anointing takes place during the Mass to emphasize the fact that it is the whole CHURCH that is praying for her members who are sick. It is the whole CHURCH that asks the Father to send His Spirit to strengthen and encourage those who are suffering from sickness of any kind. The actual anointing will take place after the homily of the Mass, when the priests will go to each person to be anointed, first laying their hands on the person’s head (asking the Holy Spirit to come down upon those who are sick, and to strengthen them); and then anointing them on the forehead and on the hands, saying “Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit.” Response: Amen. “May the Lord who frees you from sin, save you and raise you up.” Response: Amen.

WHO CAN BE ANOINTED? 1. Those who are now seriously ill. 2. Those who are temporarily ill or convalescing. 3. Those who are chronically ill (heart condition, asthma, arthritis, etc.) 4. Those who are emotionally and mentally ill. 5. Those who are 65 years and over. 6. Those who are preparing for surgery in the near future. 7. Sick children who have reached the age of reason.

Refreshments will be served after Mass.

Donations of homemade or store-bought baked goods would be greatly appreciated. Please bring your donations to the church vestibule before Mass.

Thanking you in advance!

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
