Thank You, Dr. Brown and Mrs. Sedivec
It is really impossible to sum up in a short article how much Dr. Pat Brown and Mrs. Barbara Sedivec
have done for our parish school. Dr. Brown has been principal for twenty-four years, and Mrs. Sedivec has been teaching for nineteen years. Between the two of them that is forty-three years of ministry! And that is just at St. Eugene School.
I am truly thankful to both of them for their dedication and faith. When I came to St. Eugene Parish as a new pastor back in 2006, I was truly blessed to have Dr. Brown taking care of the school. Her knowledge, professionalism, and faith is incredible. Many new principals (some in the area) turn to Dr. Brown for advice. She has long been regarded by many in the downtown offices as the premiere example of an excellent princi-pal. What a gift she has been to me and our school. I will truly miss her presence next year. I am thankful that she will be in the parish and only a phone call away.
My working relationship with Mrs. Sedivec was not as close as it was with Dr. Brown, however, I was always impressed when I had the opportunity to work with her. Mrs. Sedivec is an extremely gifted teacher who speaks (besides English) Chinese, Spanish, Czechoslovakian, and Latin. Her knowledge of science, math and many other areas is amazing. If there is a genius in our school, I think it would be Mrs. Sedivec. I am thankful for her many years of service to our school.
As I stated above, it is impossible to grasp in a few short sentences all that Dr. Brown and Mrs. Sedivec have accomplished. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. With that thought in mind, I would like to share some pictures with you of their time here at St. Eugene School.
May God bless both of them as they begin a new chapter in their lives!

THE TRINITY IS LOVE Theologians throughout the Christian centuries have spilled much ink (and, on occasion, some blood) in describing and defining the mystery of the Holy Trinity. One of the earliest, most poetic, and beautiful descriptions comes from St. Augustine in De Trinitas, wherein he describes the Trinity as One (the Father) who loves, One (the Son) who is loved, and One (the Spirit) who is love. And these three Ones are also one Three. It might be wisest for us to leave the technical wranglings to the academic theologians, and focus on the fact that the three Persons of the Trinity are indeed persons; they are best known and understood in their love for each other and for us. We are made in the image of those loving persons, and our best relationships are lived out in the context of love. Truly loving relationships are inexhaustible mysteries to be lived in joy. If this is true of our human relationships, how much more so is it true of our relationship with the Trinity. And how much more does it call upon us to be joyful, loving witnesses of the holy mystery of the One-in-Three. This is the mystery to which we were called when we were chosen to be God’s own, baptized with water in the name of the Holy Trinity. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

OUR PATRON, POPE ST. EUGENE I
Pope St. Eugene I
The feast day of our Patron Saint is commemorated in the Roman martyrology on June 2, the day of his burial at St. Peter’s.
It is good to honor St. Eugene. His pontificate was very brief, from August 10, 654 to June 2, 657, but he
accomplished a lot during that short time. He was a gentle and holy man who showed great charity to the
poor. He was a great defender of the theological truth that Christ is one person with two complete and dis-
tinct natures: a divine nature consubstantial with the Father, and a human nature consubstantial with us.
Pope St. Eugene I is a great Saint to call upon for intercession if you find yourself confronted with heresy.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There are plenty of “treasures” in our tradition that if resurrected today would cause anxious moments for bish-ops! Many concern marriage. There was a time when the church “consecrated” both virgins dedicated to prayer and charity, and brides dedicated to husband and family. Vir-gins were blessed in the sanctuary of the church, and brides in the sanctuary of the home. The custom of bless-ing the bride in the marriage chamber was standard in England, Ireland, Spain, and France until the eleventh century. If the groom (the groom’s side planned the wedding) chose from the full menu of liturgy, there would be a blessing of the bridal room, solemn evening prayer on the eve and morning prayer on the day of the wedding, a blessing at the church door of the spouses, and then in the church for the wife alone during Mass, and Communion. After the feast, a priest would represent the bride’s father in presiding over the legal process by which the bride transferred from her father’s clan to her husband’s. Some enduring customs hearken back to these days when mar-riage was seen as a contract between men (the bride’s father and the groom) and was not so much about living out one’s baptismal call, and certainly not about the equality of the spouses in Christ. Happily, this baptismal focus has been restored and unhelpful customs set aside by today’s marriage rite. Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,
to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the
whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is
available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory
procession from now until the war is over.
A PRAYER LORD, HOLD OUR TROOPS IN YOUR LOVING HANDS. PROTECT THEM AS THEY PROTECT US. BLESS THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THE SELFLESS ACTS THEY PERFORM FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED. WE ASK THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS OUR LORD AND SAVIOR. AMEN
We pray for our loved ones
who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to
God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish
community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and
empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-
tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our
participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the
needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all peo-
ple together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
