Mission Statement We, the faith community of St. Bernadette, strive to better know, love, and serve God, through the teachings of

His Son Jesus Christ and the graces provided to us through His Holy Spirit and the Sacraments.

Dear Parishioners,

This is Catholic Schools week in the U.S. This continues to be a significant ministry of the Church despite the many challenges to supporting private education. This work of the church is not what it once was, as we know, however schools still have a significant impact on the Church and society. Neither St. Bernadette or Our Lady of Lourdes has a Catholic school any more but both parishes support Catholic education indirectly. The Diocese has an assessment on each parish to support Catholic schools in the Diocese. All the Parishes then with or without schools support Catholic schools. The cost of private education creates many challenges in keeping schools open, yet children of all demographic groups are beneficiaries of our schools. However, it is more than education itself that we feel is important, it is passing on faith that sets Catholic schools apart. I also want to mention that religious education for those not in Catholic schools is vital as well and in the case of both Catholic schools and Religious Education the support and example of parents, and other family members is necessary for the faith to be lived.

God Bless, Fr. Dave

Question of the Week Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Accepting responsibility

Reading I Nehemiah 8:2b–4a, 5–6, 8–10 (Ezra reads the Law) Reading II 1 Corinthians 12:12–30 (analogy of the body) Gospel Luke 1:1–4; 4:14–21 (beginning of Jesus’ preaching)

Key Passage: Jesus unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, be cause he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.” (Luke 4:17b–18a) Adult: What do you believe that the anointing you received at baptism requires you to do? Child: What could you do this week for someone who has less than you?

Reflection

Today’s readings invite us to hear God’s Word spoken in our midst and respond with confidence despite fears or concerns, because it is Good News. Have there been moments when you’ve felt overwhelmed or unqualified in your ministry? God doesn’t call those who are qualified, rather, he calls people of faith and then qualifies them for ministry. Reflect upon the words of the prophet Isaiah: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me . . . he has anointed me . . . He has sent me . . . Let these words strengthen you whenever you feel challenged or burdened in your ministry.

myParish App Tip Where do I find my ministry schedule?

Right at your fingertips you can check your scheduled ministry time. • On the home screen, tap Parish Info. • Then, next to our website address, tap the little globe icon that represents the worldwide web to reach our website. • At our website, tap on the 3 horizontal lines in the upper right corner, under the picture. • Scroll down to Worship/Ministry Schedules. • Tap Ministry Schedules. Now you’ll see the links to the various ministry schedules.
