Mission Statement We, the faith community of St. Bernadette, strive to better know, love, and serve God, through the teachings of

His Son Jesus Christ and the graces provided to us through His Holy Spirit and the Sacraments.

Dear Parishioners,

The readings for the end of the Liturgical year and the beginning of Advent always focus in some way on being ready for the end of the world or the end of our life. This may seem scary but in Christian thought, going back centuries, this prompting to be alert is also a way to point to hope, hope in the life to come, and hope that God is ultimately in charge of all that will be made good. For a long time, I have thought that the way to be ready for either the end of our own life or the end of time is simply to go about doing those things, the golden rule for example, that we are called to do anyway. We have been given the tools we need, continue to use what the Lord has provided. I have used this example before, but I think it applies. In the military training takes place for an emergency hoping it doesn’t happen, however if something does happen the training kicks in and the task can be done. In a similar way or “training in faith” is with us as well.

God Bless, Fr. Dave

Emergency Updates

From time to time, it is a good idea to make sure the parish office has your current emergency contact information. If you’re not certain we are up to date, please call or email the office with names and phone numbers of those you would like us to contact in the event of an emergency you may have. It’s one more way we all take care of each other.

Annual Pantry Turkey Drive

The pantry continues collecting turkeys for Christmas. Donations will be accepted before and after Masses as well as any weekday, during regular office hours.

Memorial Donations for Christmas Flowers This is a nice way to remember loved ones at Christmas time. Money donated is used to enhance the altar and decorate throughout the church with beautiful poinset-

tias and other seasonal plants. Envelopes labeled “Christmas Flower Donation” are available in the vestibule and also at the doors of the church. Place your envelope in the collection plate or drop it off in the parish office.

Inclement Weather and Cancellation Policy When the Raytown School District is broadcast closed on radio and television, our morning weekday liturgies, as well as ALL morning and afternoon events, are cancelled. For evening events, a determination will be made by 4:00 pm and posted on both our voice mail and web site.

First Sunday of Advent Page 4 December 3, 2017

Question of the Week First Sunday of Advent

God’s faithfulness

Reading I Isaiah 63:16–17, 19, 64:2–7 (prayer for the return of God’s favor) Reading II 1 Corinthians 1:3–9 (thanksgiving) Gospel Mark 13:33–37 (need for watchfulness)

Key Passage: God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 Corinthians 1:9) Adult: How do you know when you’re following Christ and living his teachings faithfully? Child: What good thing might God be asking you to do right now?

Reflection

Watching or waiting? Which are we engaged in this Advent? Waiting implies passivity, a tacit acceptance of one’s fate. This is not the Gospel of Mark, the Gospel account that begins today that we will read throughout the year. The sacred author propels his Gospel forward. From his language, to the images he uses, to his style, Mark encourages us to press forward to the Cross. Watching is an active word. We are to be attentive. All our senses are alert and ready for Jesus to come into our lives and our world. So, which are we? Are our lives about a passive acceptance of events, or are we help-ing with the building of the Reign of God?

Help Care for the Elders “Thanks to support from the Retirement Fund for Re-

ligious, we are now in a much better position to care for our elders,” writes a religious sister.

Your donation helps her religious community and hundreds of others provide for aging members and

plan for long-term needs.

Please give to next week’s Retirement Fund for Religious collection.

Thank You Thank you to Maureen Williamson and Marie Felz for flowers to display during October in

front of the Blessed Mother.

God Bless God Bless all who helped me chair the Community Dinner on Sat-

urday, November 11, 2017. Thanks to Pat Wilkerson for her presentation on “Mardi Gras.” Food must have been good, as

many went back for seconds. Joanne Ferdig

Hospital Visits

Did you know that hospitals do not call to notify the parish about your stay, even though they may ask for your religious affiliation at admission? Ask your nurse to contact the hospital chaplain if you want to receive com-munion. Each hospital has a different schedule. Did you also know St. Bernadette Parish serves Research Hospital on Fridays? We have six Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who serve on rotation.

“Praise be to you, my Lord.” These words open Pope Francis’ encyclical on ecology and care for God’s creation, Laudato Si, quote the canticle of

St. Francis of Assisi. They remind us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.

Make His House Shine Please bring your cleaning supplies and help us do the gen-eral cleaning of the church on Saturday, December 16 at 9 am, after the Communion Service. It’s such an honor to clean the House of the Lord as we prepare to celebrate His birth!
