Saint Peter Chrysologus’ Story Feast Day - July 30

A man who vigorously pursues a goal may produce results far beyond his expectations and his intentions. Thus it was with Peter ” of the Golden Words,” as he was called, who as a young man became bishop of Ravenna, the capital of the empire in the West.

At the time there were abuses and vestiges of paganism evident in his diocese, and these Peter was determined to battle and overcome. His

principal weapon was the short sermon, and many of them have come down to us. They do not contain great originality of thought. They are, however, full of moral applications, sound in doctrine, and historically significant in that they reveal Chris-tian life in fifth-century Ravenna. So authentic were the contents of his sermons that some 13 centuries later, he was declared a doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XIII. He who had earnestly sought to teach and motivate his own flock was recog-nized as a teacher of the universal Church.

In addition to his zeal in the exercise of his office, Peter Chrysologus was distin-guished by a fierce loyalty to the Church, not only in its teaching, but in its authority as well. He looked upon learning not as a mere opportunity but as an obligation for all, both as a development of God-given faculties and as a solid support for the wor-ship of God. Some time before his death around A.D. 450, Saint Peter Chrysologus returned to his birthplace of Imola, in northern Italy.

Reflection Quite likely, it was Saint Peter Chrysologus’ attitude toward learning that gave sub-stance to his exhortations. Next to virtue, learning, in his view, was the greatest im-provement to the human mind and the support of true religion. Ignorance is not a virtue, nor is anti-intellectualism. Knowledge is neither more nor less a source of pride than physical, administrative, or financial prowess. To be fully human is to expand our knowledge—whether sacred or secular—according to our talent and op-portunity.

Please note that our calendar for Mass intentions has become quite full, which is a good problem to have! However, we ask that you please understand as we try to schedule the current in-tentions on file. Of course we will still take your intentions, and will do the best we can to accommodate, and ask for your pa-tience as we do so. If there are certain dates you wish to request for Mass inten-

tions, please try to do so well in advance - daily Mass: 5 months or more, and weekend requests 7-8 months or more. Again, we will do our best to ac-commodate. Please remember that what is important is not when we schedule a Mass intention, but rather that we do schedule them. Canon Law requires one Mass per weekend to be the intention of the people of the parish.

Stewardship Moment July 28, 2019 – 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Luke 11:9

Jesus assures us that if we ask, God will take care of what we need. The problem is that our culture often confuses what we really need with what we simply want. Many people need very little. However, we usu-

ally want so much more. A good steward only asks God for what he needs.

The earth has yielded its harvest; God, our God, blesses us. May God bless us still; that the ends of the earth may revere him. Ps. 67:7-8

Brother Knights,

As I sit at the computer typing this newsletter, I can only think how blessed we have been in July with rain and no major storms. Our den window faces north and to see the lush grain fields, green pastures and the bounty of my garden is an awe-some sight. Praise the Lord with what he provides us.

Why be a member of the Knights of Columbus? It offers you the opportunity to serve yourself and others. In the State of North Dakota last year we raised near-ly $20,000 for Home on the Range and $65,000 for scholarships for vocations for young men entering the Priesthood in our State. We give scholarships to gradu-ates of our high school that are furthering their education. We rise to the occasion of serving others.

Monday, August 5th, will be our meeting date as we will join with the Catholic Daughters for a joint Family Picnic at Pioneer Park. The park is west of the swimming pool. Supper will be at 6:00 followed by our meet-ing. Bring lawn chairs and bug spray. If the weather is not cooperative we will move to the church. KC's will provide burgers, tube steak (wieners) and buns. If you have a knack for grilling, contact me to help grill.

However, any item you are able to donate will be very much appreciated!

Harvey High School FFA will be hosting at the pantry on the AUGUST 8th distribution.

Our collected items will be taken to the pantry to be shelved on TUES-DAY, AUGUST 6th at 5:00 P.M.

The Board of Directors sends to St. Cecilia’s their thanks for your generous donations throughout the year….with your help we can live our motto “Glorifying God By Helping Others.”

God’s Blessings to all! Kathy Grossman

“God is our refuge and strength always ready to help in times of trouble” Ps 46:1.

Love this verse, may we always remember this! Hope everyone is enjoying a nice summer with family and friends! Our June meeting was well attended with 26 ladies. We had a delicious meal catered by Barb Deck and her crew. Deb Schmitz was our guest speaker who gave an inspiring talk ”Coping with life’s changes”. Thank you Deb for the wonderful words of wisdom.

We will be having our CDA KC family picnic on Monday, August 5th at the poolside park at the west shelter at 6 pm, weather permitting. The KC’s will be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs. Please bring a salad or dessert to share. Please call Susan Waldoch, Kathy Grossman, or me if you have any questions about the picnic. If the weather doesn’t cooperate we will be having the picnic in the church basement. Our meeting will follow the picnic.

Always pray to have eyes that see the best in people, a heart that forgives the worst, a mind that forgets the bad, and a soul that never loses faith in God!
